"Strange Relationship" is a song from Prince's 1987 double album, Sign o' the Times. A live performance of the song was released as a digital single, made available on Prince's website on 26 March 2005. Strange Relationship" has a long history. The song was actually recorded by Prince in 1982, during a highly prolific period in Prince's recording career, but remained in the vault for several years. The song was reworked in 1985 with input by Wendy and Lisa, giving it an unusual Indian sound, and was slated for the ill-fated 1986 Dream Factory project. After the disbanding of The Revolution, the Dream Factory project was shelved, but Prince retained "Strange Relationship" and reworked it once again for his Camille album. Camille was canceled, but most of the tracks, including "Strange Relationship" were absorbed into a 3-LP opus called Crystal Ball, due for a late 1986 release. Warner Bros. forced Prince to trim the album from 3 to 2 LPs which became Sign o' the Times, and "Strange Relationship" finally saw an official release. The released version dropped most of the Eastern influence, placing the sitar and wood flute deep into the mix. On low volume comes his unreleased "Old Friends 4 Sale," an arrow-to-the-heart rock ballad about trust and loss. Unlike "Positively 4th Street" -- which Bob Dylan reputedly named after a nearby Minneapolis block -- the lyrics are sad, not bitter. "I don't know too much about Dylan," says Prince, "but I respect him a lot. 'All Along the Watchtower' is my favorite of his. I heard it first from Jimi Hendrix." I remember reading in the liner notes that there was a sitar on "Strange Relationship" and I remembered being worried because I thought of all the sitar-heavy Beatles tracks, which I was none too fond of. Turns out "Strange Relationship" is my favorite Prince song of all time. Oh my goodness what an amazing adventure it was experiencing this album. "Forever In My Life," "Adore," "Starfish and Coffee," "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man," "The Cross," "If I Was U'r Girlfriend," and the marvelous title track. There truly wasn't a single song I would ff through - I loved every bit of 'both' albums. And the movie!!!! And "4 Those of U on Valium"! What a great time to be a Prince fan. This is one of the best threads in a looooong time. SOTT is really an event album the true meaning of a timeless musical expression. The title track, Housequake, Adore...you name it..throw on now at any club, ride with it blaring out the car windows down any Martin Luther and heads shall bop. A fantastic album, not only was it my initial introduction into jazz but it took my mack game to a new level. You don't know how many girls in high school I wrote the lyrics of '4ever in my life' to...and if any of those ladies are on this site tonight...I won't you to know I meant every word of it. 1 over Jordan...the greatest since | |
