Everyone goes in and out of who they are "into" or "dig". Prince will always be showing his influences in his music. His guitar solos reek of Santana, as well as Hendrix or anyone else. His bass playing will always reflect Graham, etc etc. He may or may not DIG them at any given point, but the influence cannot be removed.

there's a lot of sheila e in prince's post- '84 drumming.

also, as michael b mentioned in one of those org chats, listen to stravinsky's 'firebird suite' for insight into a lot of prince songs.

one of the fascinating things about prince's music is the way he combines influences in unexpected ways.
