Can't believe no one said "The Beautiful Ones" (or at least I didn't see it if they did)... the reverbed Linn kick drum tuned to sound like a bass line & rim shot, the synthesizer keys. Those opening rhythm knocks are signature... just the first measure and the song is instantly recognizable.
I saw someone else say "Crystal Ball" and I'd have to put that in my top three because the opening of that song rivals the best opening credits in film. The stage is being set for an amazing story to unfold. The sirens, the Clare Fischer strings slowly building to a climax, hinting at the melodic hook. Although I don't want to pick another song from Purple Rain, I'd have to add "When Doves Cry." Amazing guitar opening which merges with Prince's "yeah yeah yeah" growls alternately panned from left to right, and faded from front to back... introduces the song in a very 3Dimensional way... it's like carving out the physical space that's gonna be needed to jam.
