Also he sings about putting it in his hair before a shower or after? It has to be after. More than likely he could be referring to the olive oil spray sheen. A lot of African-American hairdressers/barbers use it on their customers' hair as a finishing touch to give it a sheen. You can buy it at Target ( no pun intended) or any beauty supply place. This is funny, Prince makes a comment in one line of his song about something he puts in his hair and we have an actual thread discussing a line of hair products because of it... ....something only Prince fans do.. you gotta love us. No, I meant the Aloe juice they sell now for you to drink. That I do not know. I've seen Aloe Vera juice in health food stores sold as a colon cleanser. For the skin, it's probably best to buy it in lotion form or natural, as in the leaf itself (they sell the leaf in supermarkets) if you want to use it on your hair or skin. It's been around for quite a number of years now, and I also have been using that , as well as my sisters, nieces, mother, etc., for quite some time. No biggie.(by the way, all caps usually signify yelling, it's not that serious...sweetie). [Edited 4/8/09 19:48pm]

Don't know if this is really possible, from what I understand hair grows from the inside out. once hair is visible it is 'dead' and cannot be repaired,etc.. From what all of my hairstylist have told me a supplement applied topically to hair would therefore be ineffective in increasing growth rate

From what all of my hairstylist have told me a supplement applied topically to hair would therefore be ineffective in increasing growth rate Of course its possible. Once hair is out of the scalp it is dead, but that dead or "topical" part of your hair still has to be maintained and needs proper care like moisturizing and conditioning to keep it in order. The oils that many use in the scalp "stimulates" hair to grow out of the scalp, so many of these oils do promote hair growth. Many African-Americans use oil sheen sprays to keep a nice sheen or glow to the hair. Oil sheen products, can also serve as a "light" moisturizer to scalp and hair during dry, cold weather, and as a protection from a dry scalp from the sun in the summer months. That term you often hair "greasing the scalp" as (jill4life mentioned) or "oiling the scalp" comes to mind. Usually when very, young African-American girls have their hair braided, (especially when it's in natural form, before some get older and decide to use a perm), their mom would use a "pomade" or "oil" to keep the scalp and hair moisturized. Moms use it in their boys' hair as well to keep the scalp moisturized. Everyone hair has their own hair texture. I'm not a hair expert, but been around enough friends who were/are hair dressers. Keep in mind, it all depends on what type of hair each individual has. For some, not all, African-American hair types, because we have so many variations, due to all the mixing of races in the past/current, it depends on the texture of the hair. Two African-Americans, could come from the same exactly family and have different types of hair, and such is the same for many other races/ethnic groups as well. If it's dry or kinky the hair, then in my opinion, the more moisturizers for the scalp and conditioning of the hair is needed to stimulate, promote growth, and to maintain both a healthy scalp and hair. If it's permed, perms strips oil from the hair, so it needs to be conditioned, moisturized frequently. Olive, Coconut, Castor and other oils, have been used in this type hair for ages and does promote hair growth. Straighter/fine usually do not need a lot of oil/moisturizers in the scalp. All hair types benefit from conditioning though, once hair grows out of the scalp, in order to maintain a healthy, scalp and manageable hair. [Edited 4/9/09 9:19am]

Yes, I know. I know people that use regular olive oil on their hair, but it tends to weigh the hair down when you use is straight on the scalp. Some people put it in their hair just before they wash it. East Indian women put coconut oil in their hair before washing. I used to use olive oil as a substitute for Afro Sheen but it was way to messy and heavy. "The fanbase I have now, they're so sophisticated, they almost expect me to do the unexpected." -Prince
