NPG-Exodus...can someone summarize those Segues for me?

I can only understand snippets, there's much "slang" speech in there...is there a consecutive story, are they related to each other? I like track #7 biggrin

As much as I love Exodus (I could groove to "The Exodus Has Begun" all day), those segues are way too much. I usually cut them out when listening the album. I love the segues on The Gold Experience, but on Exodus....eh.

They're nothing but another example of how bad a sense of humor Prince has. The album is filled with some great moments but those segues are some of the most cringe-inducing things he's ever recorded and considering his musical output for the past decade, that's saying a lot.
No hard feelings.

they're comedy skits that are sort of vaguely related to the songs they appear beside.

Feh! Mashed Potato Girl and New Power Day are Prince at his funniest!

Sadly, that's entirely possible.

No, he has a ton of humor in his work. You are just obsessively salty.

Name some of those comedy nuggets. Other than Adore when he says "Maybe not the ride," I can't think of anything approaching genuine humor on any of his records.
No hard feelings.

"Sarah" from "The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale"

"I'd never raise my hand to you.. but there's no tellin' what my foot will do. I'm kidding baby that's a joke..."

I thought that was kinda funny.

"Movie Star" from "Crystal Ball" set:

"check it out baby, rolls royce, you wanna dance now? ( girl: "maybe next song") "Dance floor's not big enough for that cow"

There's lots of stuff in his music that is very funny, those two examples are just fresh in my mind cuz I was listening to those cds in the car today.

And IMO, the Mashed Potato Girl segue from EXodus is very funny, I didn't dig any of the other segues though.

Right, someone is so fat that they're a cow is comedic brilliance. I'm sure I laughed at that kind of joke too -- when I was about 5. Even then it was likely a conciliatory chuckle.
No hard feelings.

Just listen to Work That Fat -- pretty much sums up Prince's sense of humor when it relates to weight.

One of my first intros to Prince's humor was in the extended version of Kiss -- the married couple (Sophie and Sol) in the background. Great stuff!

they're funny the first few times, but after that, it's a waste of space. there was actual music left in the vault that should have been on here instead. not much of it's really as good as what's on the album, but it would be better than segues. or just forget them and replacing them altogether.

So, when you release your album then, we can all be blown away by the spectacular and perfect choices you make, eh? wink

For me, I've always loved the segues and the album as a whole - it was, and remains, a great piece of work.

i dunno dude, i like the album as a single piece of work, including the segues. the comedic breaks are a rest from the tension in the rest of the songs. it works for me.

At the time I saw it as part of the trend of pop/R&B albums where there was a segue between every track. Some of the bravado and forced camaraderie obviously hasn't aged well at all, but there's some good laughs there too, the whole Mashed Potato Girl thing is still really funny.

Personally I loved and still love these moments on the exodus album.

Particularly 'hit him so hard, change fell out his pockets'. That still makes me belly laugh biggrin

Movie Star is funny from start to finish, as are Cloreen Bacon Skin and Bob George (especially when he makes fun of himself).

The NPG segues are funny, but they're overused and really make the Exodus album (as a whole) less accessible and actually kinda ghetto-ish.

See this is part of the problem. Prince makes great music - but all the "choices" you mention are better left to a manager/producer. Someone who can handle the day-to-day bullshit while Prince keeps his mind free to create.

Prince also needs to be open to someone saying "no" to him.

i think they're fine, most of them, but when you get to the point where there are 2 or 3 of them in a row, it's a little ridiculous.

yes, well... i listen to albums to hear music. that about 1/3 of the album is handed over to skits gets in the way of that.

LOL - you do know the mountains on the ATWIAD cover is the shape of a naked woman, right?

After all that smack-talk, I just listened to Exodus. Return Of The Bumpsquad is one of the funkiest things he's released.
