i have the audience recording of this track,which is my all time favourite live Prince track...but am wondering if the ONA Live soundboard cut takes away some of the atmosphere that goes so well with the song...like the audience being so in the fore,& making the narration of the song,like lines such as "the song's a year long & had been playin 4 months,when he walked in2 the place...no1 seemed 2 care & introverted 'this is it' look on most of their faces" being perfect with the crowd,the story of it being set in a club. (if that makes sense 2 u)

basically,does the Sb recording on ONAL do it justice?
all i really give a shit about mainly is that guitar!!! WOO HOO!!! it beats JustMyImagination from SmallClub,& thats a tough one 2 defeat

U can tell it's been fixed up a bit on ONA...Live.

U don't hear Prince goof up the words on the CD.

Now, to answer your question directly, I said in one of the other threads that I seemed to prefer the boot version of this song even though this is SB quality. The bottom sounds heavier, no added keyboards after the fact, and it just sounds funkier...to me!

ok i have downloaded the ONA Live SB version...& its gonn take a few listens 2 fully get used 2.Cos im used 2 the bootleg,& the sound of it,it sounds better 2 me.
BUT...SB is the way it is MEANT 2 b heard.
JustMyImagination is amazing,im gonna put these 2 trax back2back on a P guitar cd should b cool.

I'm glad this thread was started, I thought the same thing when I heard the SB vers of Joy In Repetition. I've had the boot 4 months. The boot just sounds heavier, more raw!! This is probably my fave song on the Box Set. This vers does top even the gem from the Emanciption TV Special. By the way did Maeco and Candy D play on this song??? I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

Here's the deal with the 2 different versions of Joy. I was at the NYC shows and the bootleg version is from the rehearsal and the CD version is from the aftershow. The aftershow version sounded just like the cd. His solos were amazing. I don't think he overdubbed anything on this track.

The bootleg "soundboard" version is definitely from the rehearsal before the show. I was bummed he played that song twice that night because though I like it, I would have like to hear 2 different songs instead.
