the more i listen to 4ever the more i like it, and hear the old emotional Prince of yesteryear. But i tend to generally agree with this thread. i put it down to religion, which let's face it, usually suffocates any real human emotion that doesn't fit in the 'rules'.

I feel the ballads on MPLSOUND brings that work down a beg.It really is a telling sign because i used to look forward to his slower numbers. Prince's ballads started losing steam around 1989... but he still had respectable ones up until 2001... "better with time' is boring, "ur gonna c me" is nice but doesn't hit your gut like "empty room or "she gave her angels".. what do ya'll think?
And u can't satisfy your mate anymore either... blah blah blah

Honey, it's a matter of taste - I happen to like the ballads that have come on the MPLSound album, as well as 3121 (it's just not fayah!)

rusty1 said: do we really need more songs such as "4ever,"wherever u go whatever u do... songs such as those are 2 simplistic 4 my taste
I've read quite a few posts dismissing 4ever's lyrics as being simplistic and predictable. To a certain extent that's true, however, the thing that makes that song interesting for me, is that Prince is dealing with the prospect of living alone forever as much as wanting to be in love forever. Now, this is subject matter Prince has covered numerous times, but all of them (past songs) have a sense of hope, while 4ever acknowledges, maybe for the first time, that in all likelyhood he will not find love again. Simplistic, yes, but also profound & a little sad.

For me, it's gotta be both musically and lyrically emotional. "Somewhere Here On Earth" was lyrically unimpressive. The last song that got it right (IMO) was probably "I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore". But I agree with the OP - despite the spelling error. • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

lots of great ballads of late. i like his recent output of ballads more than the tired over-sexed bedroom style stuff r&b radio craves. i'm curious to your definition of EMOTIONAL.

[Edited 4/6/09 23:11pm] He should have done an uptempo disc and a sappy disc. The intermixing of the two really throws the entire project for a loop. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

When it comes to 'emotionally felt' that has always been a problem with Princes ballads IMO.
Not that listening to them doesnt evoke certain feelings, but I often felt that even on his most 'emotional' songs Prince was often holding back a bit, not showing 'everything'.

"condition of the heart:, "gotta broken heart again", "do me, baby", all of the slow jams on the self-titled Prince album...."the cross", "anna stesia", "adore", Prince's ballads used to all sound unique from one another. They all have the same flat uninspired vibe these days....RIGHT ON!!! BOB4theFUNK
