Falsetto or lower register?

If you had to decide between Prince's falsetto or lower register, what would your preference be?

worhol

falsetto is the best, his mid range sounds too whiny sometimes and the low sounds like Larry G lol

I suppose I'll be the weird one and say I like his normal singing voice better.

I like both, though, and it really depends on the song I guess. I mean, I couldn't imagine Adore without the falsetto or SOTT IN a falsetto haha.

great question: i dig his use of both. i listened to diamonds and pearls which i think is one of Prince's greatest songs, and love his lower range use in it...but then again, who can deny Prince's screams in falsetto. i agree there are times when it might come off funny, but in his slow/love songs, his falsetto is 100% effective

I love it how in The Most Beautiful Girl In The World he switches from falsetto to very low and back again. He has such an impressive range!

I love his falsetto in TMBGITW, When You Were Mine, Adore, SHOE, Open Book, I Hate U, Do Me Baby, ...

I love his mid range in Forever In My Life, Blue Light, I Wonder, ...

I love his lower register in certains parts of Damn U and Shhh for example.

It depends on the song, really.

Definately his natural range (lower register)

The vocal to doves cry, fury... Very rarely has that falsetto worked on a fast song IMO. Kiss obviously would be an exception and there are of course a few others

I prefer it when my boy P sings like a man.

Dig if u will a picture!

By the way this does not mean I dislike the falsetto because that would be crazy I just prefer the lower register. Also don't mean to imply that the falsetto is always feminine (although it is usually... goodness Do Me Baby is so over the top as good as it is)

Adore for example is IMO his finest falsetto vocal and there are other great ones like the Beautiful Ones or SHOE!

Some he mixed falsetto with lower register which I enjoy also. For example the One (from NPS)... great song... great vocal

Isn't it funny how different P fans taste are? TMBGITW is the kind of song that I think would have been far better if he had sung it without the falsetto.

There are other songs like this where he sings in a falsetto and it ruins it for me.....

On the other hand songs like if I was ur Girlfriend... that experimental speeded up genius of a version from Sign of the Times is good... it really is. However, when you hear him perform it with his regular vocals from the Sign of the Times movie it blows that version away. There simply is no comparison.

I really dont think I could decide! When I think of songs like Do Me Baby and Pink Cashmier the falsetto range is out of this world! But then again when he sings in the lower register on verses in songs like Nothing Compares To You (with Rosie Gains)and of course When Doves Cry, I feel it my soul!! Most of the time I think he pretty much uses them both, Think of classics like ADORE!! I mean Damn The man is Great!! cool

His 'normal' range (and i still love the camille-effect!).

Falsetto has become too much of a trick, and I think he can express and TOUCH more emotions with his normal register (Purple Rain, The Morning Papers).

My main complaint with his falsetto-use: it surely can work on ballads, and certain funk tracks, but when he uses it on rock-tracks it simply sounds weak (not powerfull enough) and misplaced (like Sylvester fronting Queen or something). Examples: Bambi, Uptown, the live version of Led Zeppelins Whole Lotta Love.

I agree with others who say it depends on the song & obviously it depends on ur mood which song u choose 2 listen 2.
Personally i`d pefer the 3rd option of the `speeded up` vocals.I have only played Lotusflow3r once this past fortnight & have had MPLSoUND on constant rotation.

Long Live Camille!!
