im a fan of ATWIAD, but songs like Paisley Park, Pop Life, America, Ladder havent held up over time for me ....

i was trying to build a different version of ATWIAD using the album tracks and material he was writing around the same time....

i think some of the Family songs would have been KILLER prince tracks:

Around the World in a Day (original version)
Manic Monday
Strange Relationship (original version)
She's Always in My Hair
Raspberry Beret
Tambourine
Nothing Compares 2 U
Screams of Passion
Desire
Mutiny
All Day, All Night

i need to find a p version of screams of passion.....!

ATWIAD s a motherf*cking great album as it is

Though I think most of the Family material is superior to most of ATWIAD, I don't think it fits very well together on the same album. The psychedlic theme of ATWAID points toward Parade, but the instrumentation (aside from maybe Tamobrine) does not. The Family material sounds like a musical step toward Parade, and there are a few songs from that album that I'd like to see things like High Fashion, Mutiny, Screams Of Passion, Desire, Nothing Compares 2 U replace, especially as it was originally intended as a double.


Though All Day, All Night and Manic Monday would be great additions to ATWIAD. And maybe some of the other 1999/Purple Rain-era leftovers that eventually turned up on Jill Jones album. 100 MPH might have been and definitely The Dance Electric would have been perfect for it.

I know he didn't want to make Purple Rain part 2, but he definitely didn't mind continuing to mine that Linn sound, and it was smart of him to keep that sound in his weelhouse for the next album.

But he could have acheived the same effect with a few stronger tracks replacing The Ladder, Temptation, and a couple of others depending on your taste, considering the kind of stuff that was basically just laying around and didn't get used for anything else at the time.

But hindsight is 20/20.

Strangely ATWIAD sounds much more like Romance 1600 and The Family much more like Parade, despite the recording order being ATWIAD/TheFamily/R1600/Parade

Ditto. Paisley Park is one of my favorite Prince songs of all time, and Pop Life speaks all by itself. Not that I'm opposed to weird Prince albums, but the order of the songs on Around the World...are ordered in such a way that to alter it would be to break up the clarity of the album. It's not a perfect album, that's for sure, but it's pretty darn close.

Lordy, why mess with Around The World In A Day? That's just plain wrong! Beautiful album from start to finish....

This is nuts. Pop Life is a prince classic and America is an interesting attempt at social commentary.

Sure Paisley Park, the Ladder and Temptation are snoozer/filler but for whatever reason, Prince was purposefully trying to NOT have a killer album.

Horrible track listing. Those are very different songs to put together. The only song that MIGHT have fit into the current configuration is the original version of "Strange Relationship". But "Manic Monday"? "Mutiny" ? "All Day All Night" ? NO.
