Which version of Ol' Skool Company do you prefer?

The one on Leno or the album version?

I like the version on Leno better, the way Prince sings certain passages and the slightly different background beat. Another reason I prefer the version on Leno is that it's as long as it should be. The album version is way too long, nothing interesting happens the last half of the song on the album.

i think they're both pretty lame. then again, chocolate box is the only track from that 3rd cd that made it to my jPod.

lol no, i really don't care for anything on that disc. I get the feeling prince thought everything would be ok if he added that 80s synth/drum sound. I think everything on that 2nd disc is way under par for his ability.

define urban prince...or, rather, provide examples.

i think the black album is awesome, i think most of the gold experience and prince are awesome. i love his funkier b-sides like scarlet pussy, irresistable bitch, etc...

i just think that "trying too hard" sound on newpowersoul, most of emancipation, and this new release sound lame to me.

When I say urban, I men r&b/funk Prince. I think Dance 4 Me is his best attempt at funk in a while. I have liked other songs in recent years (Love, Lolita, etc.), but this song really gets me. It reminds me of Erotic City (in the style it is arranged) and If I Were Your Girlfriend. I just can't get enough of it. However, I LOVE the entire MPLSOUND album except for Valentia and U're Gonna C Me (which I prefer the original version). I love Lotus also, but can't take MPLSOUND out long enough to listen to Lotus.

The real reason is Morris HAyes on those keys - he makes that entire song but you dont notice it because he is hidden behind those gargantuan cows that Prince had doing backup and a dumb ass camera man who wanted to show that big gweek on the harmonica more than anyone else. Go backand listen to what Mr. Hayes is doing live and you will see what I am saying.

I love the studio version more!!! I hit replay on "Ol' Skool Company" three times on my way to work this morning. That song is funkier than rotten eggs rolled into three day old baby pampers, along with "Dance 4 Me." I love the rock on Lotus and the funk on MPLS.

Well there is the point about urban Prince. Those 3 records you called lame are some of the deepest funk he has ever done. NewPowerSoul is the most unjustly maligned Prince erecord ever.

Most Prince fans despise NPS (if you go by the boards). I know I can't stand that album. It has some good trax, but the album is horrible as a whole (imo).

I like Emancipation and The Black Album, but cannot take NPS. I always end up pushing the skip button on most of the trax (including the title track).

I like the Leno version better. The problem with the cd version is that it is too preachy. He could of let off some of the verses.
Prince believes he is a musical prophet that has been chosen by Jehova to guide his fans to the "truth".

and therein lies the concept of personal preferences and taste. i think songs like erotic city, if i was ur girlfriend, scarlet pussy, irresistable bitch, we can funk, billy jack bitch...these are awesome funk songs by prince (in my opinion).

when i hear the stuff on newpowersoul and this new record, i just get an impression of someone faking the funk, for lack of a better description. i loved songs like illusion, coma, pimp, and circumstance, love, musicology...i'm just not feeling this stuff

Maybe it will grow on you. Sometimes, Prince's music does have to do that. I know Lovesexy and ATWIAD took a while to grow on me.

\To each his own. I dont care what anyone likes or dislikes personally. I worry about what makes me happy. I am sure I share that position with Prince.

Both are slammin' but I do like the grimmyness of the album version because it's a little slower and funkier. But both of them will make you have that face if someone farted in an elevator!

My favourite track on the album with `Dance 4 Me` a very close second.
Even tho i love any song with the Camille voice i prefer the Leno version because the backing vocals are more prominent & he changed the lyrics a bit.IMO all Prince songs sound better live!

hahah! my favorite records are lovesexy, the truth, artwiad, sign o'the times, and, prince, trc. i don't know if that helps...

by below par, i mean...it sounds repetitive, very little ambition and lots of unearned ego. i don't exactly know how to describe it. basically, i look at what prince has done and i think, "if this came out when he was starting, nobody would have paid any attention."

The Truth is one of the worst albums Prince ever made imo.
Animal Kingdom is the worst song Prince has EVER released, it´s abysmal ! I am afraid to get ear cancer when i listen to that lol
