Q Tip almost ruins Chocolate Box

It is the dumbest sounding and most unecessary rap in a real song that I ever heard. That killer groove was going along great and then here comes Q-Tip's old ass with that cartoon voice talking about Willy Wonka - just uncool. Fortunately, the tune rivals Black Sweat as a Prince electronic classic.

A "real song"? What does that mean?

Real songs have melodies and chords and structure and all the other things that rap songs don't have.

you're kidding, right? q-tip is the only reason i've listened to
this song repeatedly because beyond his contribution there isn't
a whole lot going on here that is worth going back to imo. worst
song on the album, by far.

Prince did a pretty good job of ruining the song by himself with that silly ass chorus and the horrible way he delivered the lyrics before Q Tip even came into the song. The music sounded pretty good but the nonsense that was on top of it ruined it.

i finally saw the video yesterday. it's not that good. I wish Prince would just let someone else come up with the concept and direct it. And it would be nice to have him in the same shot (meaning the same room when the video is shot) as the other person instead of being on a giant floating screen.

One that isn't an extended breakbeat?

It unfortunate to see that people continue to have such closed minded attitudes towards hip-hop. I'd rather Prince left the genre alone, but to write it off in the way that the two of you have is pretty sad. You sound like parents in the 50s, damning Rock and Roll as noise.

I happen 2 like it too. Some here don't get Q-Tip's style, so the criticism is expected.

Anyway, it's 1000% better than the stuff he did with Dudly D or the rapper on Daisy Chain.

I’d take any of Q-Tips ‘Renaissance’ tracks over the crap that is ‘Chocolate Box’

Can you imagine how disappointing it must have been for Q-tip when Prince played him the song he wanted him to rap on ....

The less said about that collaboration the better. Now THAT rap ruined a great song. Q-Tip made me like Chocolate Box even more than I did before. nod

That would have been interesting. It would bring even more publicity to the project too. Even with that, I still dig Q-Tip's rap.

Qtip probably looked at it as a challenge. He doesn't usually rap to uptempo/techno sounding songs.

I'll be honest, I didn't like the song when I first heard it. It did have to grow on me. For some reason, it reminds me of a track that would be on Controversy or 1999.

Co-Sign. Q-Tip is the bomb, although his rap on chocolate box is average at best. And the less said about the video, the better...

His rap on TGRES was 38x better. Fact.

I can't believe you people. I like Chocolate Box. Q Tip's rap goes well with the song. I don't like "there will never be another one like me" because the lyrics are terrible. Prince comes off as an old man trying to be cool. The beat is great but to bad the lyrics aren't. Chocolate Box is is very convincing. Its his best rap collaboration. Chocolate Box, Dance 4 Me, Here, and No More Candy 4 You are the best songs on MplsSound.
Prince believes he is a musical prophet that has been chosen by Jehova to guide his fans to the "truth".

How about it's that limp guitar hook, cheesy spelling lessons and the running length that almost ruin Chocolate Box?

I've been as critical of rap in Prince's music as anybody, but its not the rap that bothers me in this one. What really gets me is the Brittney Spears/ Gwen Stefani vibe I get from the song at certain points. The panting reminds me of " I'm A Slave 4 U" and the spelling lesson reminds me of
" Hollaback Girl". B-A-N-A-N-A-S!

Still a cool song though.

Both songs you mentioned are obvious copying prince's minneapolis sound of the 80ies. So basically you say you say that the song sounds like oldschool prince music.
