You guys have this all wrong right here.

Prince would be a hyprocrit if he DIDN'T remove the Target commercial at this point.

He is actually keeping his integrity moreso by removing a commercial from YouTube which could potentially benefit him financially.

He is totally keeping his integrity with this and I give him mad respect for it.

And he is actually defending the integrity of future artists' copyRIGHTS by exercising his own rights.

Mad props for following his heart and not giving in to the peer pressure of all the people who want to infringe on his copyrights just in the name of getting something for free.

except...

except...

it is a COMMERCIAL. the entire point of a commercial is to create exposure. you have to pay a media outlet money for them to run your commercial to get exposure for your product.

the commercial being posted on youtube is free promotion that generally costs a lot of money, and since it was created with the intention of promotion in the first place, he's an idiot to have it removed.

but then again, music videos are, for all intents and purposes, also supposed to be "commercials" and he doesn't like those on there either. (but apparently has no problem with them being hosted by vh1.com, mtv.com, etc.)

if prince was truly an intelligent person, he would have found a way to utilize youtube for his own financial and commercial gain. rather than sue everyone into oblivion or make his overworked lawyer file more papers, why not require the site to include a link to prince's current website? then everything on the site operates as an advertisement for his site. or, i don't know, think of something else that manipulates the media in his own benefit.

so Prince is not intelligent?

Causality and correlation are two different things.
He *might* be lacking some marketing skills in this specific area.
*We* think using youtube is a smart move.
He might think otherwise for mostly unknown reasons (aside from (C) protection).

It's someone else's speech.
N-words may have a slightly different meaning depending on location/upbringing/use/context/etc.
So I'd not be upset too soon about this now.

So you find it acceptable?

He could fuck youtube hard by running all kinds of commercials on youtube and still controlling his image and having them remove anything he does agree with. I guess his stance right now is to remove everything??? I smell lawyers, lawsuits and piles of google $$$.

No, it's YOU who doesn't know what is going on. Just like all the folks who were and still are up in arms that he removed all of his shit possible from that monopoly of a site. It isnt about what the future holds regarding releases. Its about him taking his shit and having it released the way he wants to, when he wants to, regardless of free publicity or not. Its much bigger then just adverstising.

This was discussed in another thread the other day.

Undermining himself is actually one of Prince's strongest character traits. I'm sure that Target has written him a letter of thanks and sent a bonus check his way after this exercise in marketing insanity.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Nonsense. The internet/youtube will change with or without his gripe against youtube. It's all insanity. He can complain all he wishes but anyone can find every song/video streaming on the web with a lil searching. He smelt the $$$ when Google bought up youtube.

It's all about $$$ you can still find Prince videos all over the net on other youtube like sites, do you see Prince attacking the other sites??? Google is loaded with tons of Cash. Google bought up youtube then P bitching about his videos being on youtube started.

Think about it. It kind of destroys your theory.

So you think Prince sued (or would sue) youtube because they have money? And the other smaller sites who have his videos, he doesn't care about because they dont have cash enough worth suing over?

You can't get blood from a stone. I believe his stance changed greatly towards youtube and napster when big $$$ got involved. I believe away from P's battle with youtube, corporation are involved with a fight with youtube and all the content on youtube will in time scatter to other youtube like sites. His fight is different than many who stay with the majors, and Yes I think he is looking down the road when he regains his masters. I also believe Google is huge and they are going to get involved in the music industry and P's stance may in time change or a deal will be worked out and content will be on youtube.

Nice. Linking to an article calling Prince the 'N' word.

Exactly. I don't see the necessity in calling him that. But it seems the term has been been taken out of the article as it should be.

He's either sung it or he's rapped it. Go back and listen some of the tracks on "MPLSound" especially the first two. There's been a trend going on in the last four or five years where the singers have been singing the lyrics on their uptempo tracks but they put so damn many words in each verse that it comes across as a cross between singing and rapping. Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, etc. have been doing it. Actually, the music on Mary J. Blige's "My Life's Just Fine" sounds good and I've never liked her at all. But she ruins it with that shit hop style of singing. It's like they're doing anything to keep shit hop going. They just can't let it die. Now, they're putting it in dance tracks. I'm sure there are countless other acts doing it also but these are the only ones I've heard because I stay away from the current bullshit as much as possible. And yes, Prince has rapped before but not on damn near every track on the album and he used a lot more shit hop slang than ever before. I mean, words like "shawty"...hell, how gutter trash and low class can you get? When he sleeps with his rough trade boys, he really should tell them the same thing I used to tell mine...."Don't spoil it by talking"....because he's picking up their bad influence. lol

This was a definate desperate attempt at commercial success where he's using tactics and even has songs that sound like the very people he's preaching against. Hell, maybe he finally listened to some of the tracks himself, heard how rediculous he sounded, and pulled the commercial himself hoping that no one else would hear it. That's the only explanation I can think of that he wouldn't want his commercial exposed to as many people as possible. Hell, I know that's what I'd do if I were him.

.
[Edited 4/3/09 8:12am]

Vain, in the song you're referring to, he's basically saying they didn't use "shawty" back in the day, so I don't see anything wrong with that line in the song.

As far as any references to any socio/political lines he may have used in any of his songs on his current albums, Gil Scott Heron, Sly, Marvin, Curtis Mayfield, The Tempations, etc., all of them referred to some political issue(s) with the slang that was used at that time, during their time. I am not a fan of hip-hop/rap. Conscious/political rap is a different story. But I see nothing wrong with him using that term to state they did not refer to females in that term back in the day. As long as he's not calling women b*tches, ho's and using the "N" word.

The "N" word is not acceptable. If making it alright depends on location/upbringing/use/context...then it wreaks of "ignorance." Anyway, it was tasteless.

Well it's not like it's not being shown on regular and cable tv during prime time (at least here in the US).

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would specifically log on to Youtube to see a commercial they can see on the tv every 45 minutes or so.

I've seen it on cable stations and local stations aired around primetime in the states. More than once to be exact.

This is irrationality at its finest. I wholly disagree with him taking down select songs and performances of his, but this move simply makes no sense. All that could have possibly happened by allowing it to remain up was more people going out and purchasing the album.

This seems like a spiteful act more than anything.
