Just got back from the 1st Prince gig tonight

It was my first time seeing him live. He took the stage about 30 minutes late. Much of the show was marred by sound problems-his mike was shitty, but Prince was in good spirits.

The first song he did was the song he did the first night of Leno-he teased us by playing a few chords of Purple Rain. I can't remember the order of the set list, but he played Girlfriend, Kiss, Controversy, 1999 and for the encores, Purple Rain, The Bird, Jungle Love and Glamorous Life, during which the one and only Sheila E came out. Everyone went nuts and she honored us by drumming a bit. She looked amazing.

Prince played Play that Funky Music, during which he had fans come onstage and one even sang the song. When it was over, Prince hugged everyone that had come onstage.

He also did Crimson and Clover and Hollywood Swingers. A member of his band did an amazing Harmonica version of Littlewing.

Prince said he was talking to a friend who told him that music was what Prince did and Prince replied "I AM music." The crowd went apeshit and Prince said that Jehovah was responsible for everything and that he, Prince did not think he was better than anyone.

At the end, Prince shook the hands of those in the pit and he seemed genuinely grateful for the fans.

FIRST !

Glad you enjoyed yourself biggrin !! I just wonder why doesn't he immerse us with the new music, and maybe 2 hits it's the release of lOTUSFLOW3r,especially since the set is 90 minutes. The standouts from seeing Prince past October was Crimson and Clover. Only he knows why he exhausts the same setlist after 6 years confused

Sheila seemed kind of tired, but she was beautiful, wearing an electric blue satin dress.
Glad people liked my report.Prince also played I Feel For You, Come Together and a song he wrote for Tevin Campbell. I can't remember the name of it, though. The only reason I know it was a song he did for Tevin was because the woman sitting next to knew it.

Oh, at one point, when the mike situation had gotten out of hand, he said for us to have patience and that he would do his best.I have to say that the staff at the Nokia were awful. By that, I mean the sound and stage crew. Prince's mike was awful for much of the show and he had to tell them several times to turn off the house lights or turn them up before his directive was followed.

Thanks scriptgirl for giving us a report so quick. I was sitting at home wondering about what happened at the show. I always look forward to reading reviews. I know Prince was upset about the mike situation. Its good that the crowd understood and remained calm.

I just got back home from the gig as well and I have to say, the man has not lost a step! It was evident that Prince came here to party tonight!!! The song that the other concert goer didn't know the title of was Shhhh. The set list was pretty accurate, but I didn't notice as many issues with the equipment as she did. There was feedback a couple of times, and some instruction by prince to raise levels at times, but I think the issues were a little exaggerated. If you go to as many concerts of his as I have, you know he's always saying turn the house lights on or down, or turn my guitar up ect. ect. Wow I'm tired. I danced the whole time! Right before Prince played Kiss, he asked the crowd do you ever get the feeling you have too many hits? The fan who got to sing Play that funky music white boy was a riot. He will definitely have something to tell his gran kids. I thought that he would never come close to beating the Musicology tour at this point in his career, but .... VERY CLOSE!

The Nokia theatre show wasn't very good. The audio was AWFUL and Prince's mic was filled with static and for the first half of the show he seemed to be walking through it. The pace picked up but it wasn't nearly as good as his shows have been. Having seen Prince over 15 times, I was very let down by the concert. The staging was terrible. There was NO interaction with the band (who was basically hidden) and that is why it was great when Sheila came out because there was actual interaction. Over all, not in the top 10 best Prince concerts I've seen.

I gotta say that despite the sound problems 2nite Prince still rocked. I was in the pit with the rest of the club members and we had a blast! I took my sister who never had the experience of seeing the man upclose and she had the time of her life. It was topped off for her when she got to hold both of Prince's hands and he looked at her and smiled. I have never seen a grown woman act so giddy. LOL...She will cherish that moment forever and I'm glad I was a part of it! smile

Wow. I would imagine that no Club or venue would so be weak and negligent in L.A. for such an important entertainer.

Would they?

A club or venue like Nokia would "fail" that badly for Prince? Even though Prince generated much revenue for the club/venue in a hard economy?

The managers should give their profits from the gig back to the ticket buyers.

I doubt tha twould happen to say...Paul McCartney or Bruce Springsteen at any venue..lololol

What a shame!

At least the bootleggs will sound like garbage!

lol lol lol

Awww... the first time is always memorable, but it'll take a couple more to really get your groove wink a-hem, so to speak. This was like a cool reunion party to me, the slightly late start let me get my wine and take my time getting back down to the seats. (Love walking through Prince crowds just before the show starts, so much fun.. )

Was my first time hearing him do the Bird live, that was cool...
