Prince works in mysterious ways. With very few exceptions, the Purple One's studio material has been difficult -- to defend, to enjoy, to even listen to -- for the better part of the last 15 years. Yet, he remains a musical god, largely because of his glorious catalog and his rip-roaring, guitar-shredding live appearances (if only he played guitar on his albums like he does in concert!). Then along comes "Lotusflow3r," which seems like typical Prince-ian excess: A triple-disc set composed of two new Prince albums, "Lotusflow3r" and "Mplsound," and a third disc, "Elixer," by his latest female protege, Bria Valente. You give the discs a cursory listen in preparation of casting them aside and never listening to them again, but something funny happens on the way to the cutout bin: "Lotusflow3r" grabs you. Full of unhinged, riotous guitar solos, it is, at long last, the sound of Prince playing in concert brought to the studio. It's the most vital-sounding Prince record since the early '90s. 
What really comes across is a care-free vibe that allows Prince to explore the music -- and especially his guitar -- without having the burden of crafting hit singles. He even throws in a cover of "Crimson and Clover" that liberally mixes in portions of "Wild Thing," which is as accessible as anything Prince has laid down this decade. For the man who once infamously scrawled the word "Slave" across his face to describe his feelings about the record industry, "Lotusflow3r" is as comfortable as Prince has sounded in his own skin in years. It is also, at long last, the sound of Prince acknowledging his sizable rock chops and getting his "Guitar Hero" on. "Mplsound," on the other hand, is an aimless, one-and-done funk castoff, and is all too evocative of Prince's recent output. Valente's "Elixer," meanwhile, is a wash of slow-jam monotony. (Thankfully, the whole package is priced as a single disc, which erases the sting from the two superfluous discs.) On its own, "Lotusflow3r" finds Prince back in bloom for the first time in a long time. Just when you least expected it, Prince has reminded us why he's still musical royalty. No More Candy 4 U! Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. No More Candy 4 U! :lol: this 3cd set is really showing us some interesting reactions. the guitar... remember that Dave Chappelle sketch where he acted out a Steve Irwin type documentary in which he creeped up to certain groups of people and played certain instruments to them to see the reactions? classic stuff and very fitting. The stuff about "Lotusflow3r" was cool but to totally dismiss "MPLSound" and not even address the fact that it's an obvious album of 80s funk for the causal and hardcore fans (including the Target cashier that said she liked Prince's older stuff)...the reviewer just doesn't get it! | |

I agree with this review 100%
Lotusflow3r is probably the best he's released in 15 years, if i had bought the cd instead of the download, I would place nicely along side my 80's albums, but to the side next to Come and The Truth. not jut carelessly tossed out somewhere like most his 90's work never to be listened again. It's not innovative or ground breaking in any sense but it's pretty good and most of all, it's lacking the overwhelming cringe factor of MNPSOUND | |
