Wrong....Nope read Tricky99's thread again .....NouveauDance .... lol

It's sad that you and some others on the org don't want to face you own "personal" problems dealing with this topic ....you have got to learn to move on from the 80's you can't like all of Prince's music because his musical spectrum is so wide and so great and yours is limited to what you like.....it's really simple....that's what makes him a genius... biggrin

You are so full of it lol My faves since the 80s:

  • Grafitti Bridge
  • prince
  • The Gold Experience
  • Chaos & Disorder
  • Exodus
  • Newpowersoul (yes even New Power SOUL!)
  • The Rainbow Children
  • One Night Alone
  • 3121

According to you we haven't moved on from the 80s yet I love all those post 80s albums. I'm sure some of those are on your list too but I'm the one who's stuck only loving one era and one type of Prince music. rolleyes

You need to read the thread before posting....even before editing the post read it....you can't even take the time to read Tricky99 last post... lol

Look at your own list ....what does it show....."personal taste" ....that's the point Tricky99 is making ...read the Mother F*cking thread.... lol

Supa:

Its all rather pointless isn't it lol. I still don't understand why people believe that just becasue i'm not on here labeling some Prince album "shit" means I don't have favorites and others that I think are just ok. I was disappointed with NPS and Rave to some extent. But i'm content to enjoy what they are then whine about what they are not. I guess its a positive outlook. And I can forgive Prince his failings for the very reason that I have never considered him a "god". He is just a very exceptional musician. One of the most unique in recorded music. Nothing he does do I take personally.

The name change, the utube thing, his battle with the fansites are all interesting from a spectator point of view but has zero to do with my enjoyment or not of the music.

Prince does not produce "shit". the same way the beatles or Picasso, or Toni Morrison never produce shit. The talent and intelllect of these people precludes that from happening on a general level. Does that mean i or anyone has to enjoy it? No. But I'm smart enough to hear the work and process that their work encompasses without necessarily having to personally enjoy it.

Too many of the opinions of the "haters" seem to be from the perspective that their personal regard for a piece of music is an objective measure of its worth. I know this is a fallacy and act accordingly.

So to u Musicology was "gold covered shit"? Its the extremes that bother me. It simply didn't live up to your personal expectations but that doesn't make it worthless. To denigrate the "art" as such is an insult to the artist as well as those fans who appreciate the work. What's more it gives insight into your personality which by your very example in this post points to a vulgarity of spirit and a general crassness that is ugly.

your original post

I've come to the conclusion from reading lots of reviews of Prince's latest that alot of reviewers disregard Prince's output unless it falls along a pop/rock fault-line.

Now you're just saying it's personal taste? You pigeonholed those who can't stand Lotus as disregarding because it wasn't pop/rock. That was the premise of this stupid ass thread. HELL O

so the "critical thought" part of this was acting like anyone wanted to discuss this. But in reality you have two people I can se that support the latest offerings and don't want anyone talking bad about it. Why didn't you just say so ,then no one would have had to waste their breath? It is apparent that it really doesn't matter what your musical tastes, dislikes or likes are. What matters is that no one is allowed to call Princes stuff poorly done. I have no idea how long you've been listening to Prince (specifically TRicky99 and Londonstyle) but I've been doing it since I heard Soft and Wet on the radio and thought - who is that chick! great track!! wink But somehow your "critical thought" is that I must be one of those late to the table fans if I don't LOVE every drop from his squirting guitar (oh wait- a Purple Rain reference...my bad). As a fan of any music you have every right to love or dislike the music that the artist is putting out. you have a right to your opinion. But on the org, that right is only valid if you don't talk negatively about the golden idol. Next time title your thread appropriately - "everyone who disagrees with me has a serious problem". wink

You really should try reading the first thread and then making a comment afterwards.....just because you heard Prince in the 70/80's does not mean you should not read a thread first Tricky99 thread has some good points..... biggrin

Your comments are based on age but not wisdom ... lol

I addressed the opening statement in an earlier post.

"oh such a tired idea. I GREW up on the best R&B and FUNK ever to come along. And that makes me MORE critical of any artist doing it today. I LOVE the r&b stuff that Prince has done, he just doesn't lay it out like he used to, and that is cool cause I already got it. But I also like some rock guitar (like the 3+3 Isley's) with my bass and beats. I also appreciate the twists and turns of Princes career and did all the forms he brought to the table. It's just the QUALITY that I find lacking these days. That's all."

My second post was a follow up to the rest of the posts that are all about how any one who does not like the newest (or pretty much ALL) of Princes work must have a problem and hate certain genres of music, and how you can't critique a genius. My age doesn't keep me from actually reading through all this dreck and comment on what it has devolved into.

I think they like some orgers are very dismissive of r&b and soul music. I haven't taken a scientific poll but I believe the guitiar based songs are given more props because it falls in line with what the generic white-listener wants to hear. I don't see this as racism but more racial. In that they are only reflecting thru the critique of Prince their own musical bias.

Remember Prince reached his popularity peak with an album that was more pop/rock then the majority of his output. Its become quite cliche to read some reviewer who will praise Prince while tending to dismiss the last 15 years worth of songs that cover a whole gamut of musical styles. I can't think of another musician who is lauded as a genuis but who's actual work as been so dismissed.

Each album bring phrases "like return to form" (what form?) "self-indulgent" (who should he indulge?) and "hit or miss" (funny but the "hit" and "misses" changes with each reviewer). Each reviewer seems to want Prince to return to some undefined form that doesn't exist. Generally there has never been a time Prince produced the same kind of music over an extended time period.

I think part of the problem is that Prince so extraordinarliy creative, prolific and contrary that there really isn't much precedent in the music world on how to approch him. Fans and critics have taken for granted that Prince will always be producing music. Its too much music for most of it to be good right? He's too old for it too be good right? Take a look at how much music that gets 4 stars from reviews would be described as disapointing if Prince's name was attached to it.

I really feel that no matter how "good" a Prince album is it will always be dismissed to some digree with the 3 terms I described earlier. Prince is too radical to be safely praised be the majority. Very many will claim only a piece of the purple rock, few love the many aspects he presents..

I agree with almost everything said here, except the racial part. Where I understand what you are saying, I can honestly say from a "white" person point of view, I LOVE it all. I love the funk, soul, guitar, pop, jazz, and all of it. I have a huge variety of friends of all races and many white people listen to rap, funk, r&b. It may be a "generation" thing..as I am the age of 31. But personally I see many white folks getting into r&b just as I do. R&B, rap, funk and jazz are my favorite genres.
Cool thread.
OH, and I guess I should add...I lean and sway a bit more towards MPLsound than I do to Lotus...
But love them both. smile

No one seems to get the point.
It is up to the listener! Not race....the listener!!!
Music has, did, does, and will always speak to different people in different ways.
I do not care who you are...it is what YOU like, personally.
I am white, and hate country music with a passion...but know other white people that like it, and more that are like me and hate it.
I really just feel it depends on the person.
