The tally includes online sales and the Target sales. well i took that into consideration. i'd say most folk bought it from the site. | |

----- So what CD sales are awful right now at P's age that he can move units at all is good. Besides I am sure he received some sort of upfront payment from Target. He gets paid and we get great music. | |

It's only 100,000 Cd's to get into the top 3 .....I expect Prince to be in the top 3 next week ....he must have over 500,000 fans in the US easy...music sales are at their lowest in years it should be a walk in the park with this 3 x CD... lets say he sold 130k, isn't that about 10milion dollars he made? 100,000 LF members is being generous, I think. Album sales are misleading, because people are buying multiple copies. But, even 100,000 at $77 each is 7.7Million --- not shabby. | |

Whether it's number 1 or not, this is great news. I hope that sales from this week will help make Prince keep on promoting these CD's so that there can be more units being sold. While this all happens. I'll keep on doing this: [Edited 4/2/09 7:14am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that | |

Prince and Keith Urban Battle for Number One on the Charts 4/2/09, 9:16 am EST Photo: Lovekin/Getty(Urban), Mazur/WireImage(Prince) It’s going to come down to the wire for the top spot on the charts next week as Prince and Keith Urban are locked in a close race for Number One. According to Reuters, “industry prognosticators” anticipate Urban’s Defying Gravity will edge out Prince’s triple attack of LOtUSFLOW3R, MPLSoUND and Bria Valente’s Elixer. Both albums are expected to sell in the neighborhood of 150,000 copies, though Urban might top out at 160,000. LOtUSFLOW3R would be Prince’s fifth U.S. chart-topping album, following Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, the Batman soundtrack and, most recently, 2006’s 3121. Even if it doesn’t claim the top spot, the LOtUS package will undoubtedly sell more than the 96,000 copies Prince’s previous album Planet Earth mustered in 2007. Urban has never claimed a Number One spot, settling for Number Three on both of his previous albums. If Prince does win the sales race, the victory will likely come with some kind of industry asterisk: The LOtUSFLOW3R package was released on Sunday, March 29th, giving Prince an additional two days of sales and a nine-day debut week. However, Keith Urban isn’t leashed to an exclusive deal with Target like Prince is, making Defying Gravity more widely available. Plus, the amount of copies purchased via membership to Prince’s newly launched LOtUSFLOW3R Website likely won’t be included in his final tally. One thing is for certain, and that’s that Now! 30 probably won’t be topping the charts again. For more on the LOtUSFLOW3R package, check out this week’s New Music Report for Rolling Stone’s take on the Purple One’s three-disc set. | |

The tally includes online sales and the Target sales. I don't think they include any sales from his own site, do they? I've not read anything confirming this. | |

Was that ALL it sold in the States!!!!! It might not be anywhere near his best work but it had a few great tracks and deserved better than that! Remember when Prince & the Revolution were No1 in the USA with the Purple Rain LP for 26 weeks!!!!! Actually, it was 24 weeks but who's counting? As far as kids today are concerned, Playstation, Xbox are the rage. Plus for those few who do listen, there are ipods, Internet and stuff for downloads. Plus today's wretched economy don't do much 2 help neither. The days of Thriller, PR, and Born In the USA with 20 million sales are long gone. [Edited 4/2/09 11:32am] | |

But even with Amy, she only sold just over 2 mil here states-side. The bulk of her massive sales was in Europe with 10 mil and counting. I used to live in Germany 4 years and that's where I 1st saw MJ, P, and Bon Jovi in concert; and I must say Europeans tend 2 have a better appreciation 4 such artists than here. Just sayin'. Planet Earth is a complicated album as far as distribution. although it sould only 96,000 copies in the US, 3 million copies where distributed in the UK. The 3 million copies is no indication of interest from the consumer's standpoint, but it was a great way to 'advertise' his music. I thought the distribution deal was very clever, as Musicology was. The problem, for me, is the product needed to also wow it's listeners, many of whom may not be diehard fans, and neither of the albums was that impressive. If Prince had distributed The Gold Experience in that manner, he would have enjoyed several years of chart topping success. | |

jtfolden said: JayJai said: wow Purple Rain (Album) was released on Jun 25, 1984 and certified Platinum on August 29th. Back in those days, RIAA (Record Industry Association of America), and record companies for that matter were slow in certifying record sales due to auditing constraints and other business "red-tape" issues. But I remember well when PR actually sold over a mil in one day. I also remember when Thriller sold over a mil in one week at one point (I think it was when the Thriller vid came out!). Another case in point, Marvin Gaye's magnum opus, What's Going On, actually sold between 2 to 3 million during the early 1970's. But because Motown and Berry Gordy didn't submit their auditing reports to RIAA regarding record sales until 1976, no records got certified until recently. WGO didn't get certified gold until December 20, 1993. It still awaits it's platinum certification despite the sales. Another example is the Grease soundtrack, that has been a big consistent seller, according to Soundscan, but even today it hasn't received an upgraded certification status from the RIAA since Nov 1984. I hope that cleared some confusion in a long-winded manner. [Edited 4/4/09 4:05am] [Edited 4/4/09 4:06am] [Edited 4/4/09 4:07am] | |
