Why, oh why, are people so shocked Prince sells? I truly don't understand the negativity on here when it comes to Prince selling CDs. "Honest" people have said it'll debut out of the Top 20, sell 150,000 "total" sales, it'll fall off dramatically, etc. etc.
Why? Has anyone looked at what CDs actually sell today? I think 2 of the biggest selling recent CDs were exclusive with Walmart; the Eagles and AC/DC. I don't I ever heard even a single song off of either CD, yet they sold very, very well. Target's doing a bang-up promotion and Prince is doing his job. I believe it should continue to sell well even after it's first week. CDs will NEVER sell what they used to. The days of 15 million selling albums are long gone, due primarily to downloading. I would imagine when all is said and done, this'll be his biggest selling album in a long time. [Edited 4/1/09 18:42pm]

A few things:
With a few exceptions (Purple Rain, Batman, Diamonds & Pearls), Prince has never been a blockbuster seller. Look at USA sales for albums like Parade and Sign O' the Times. Still, with proper promotion, Prince has and will sell well. "New Power slide...."

I guess it's all those years in the wilderness and Prince shooting himself in the foot, commercially speaking, time and time again that leads people to expect the worst when it comes to sales.

Probably. I would say he used to have almost the worst promotions for CDs; think "Gold," "Come," "Rave," "Rainbow," etc. etc. etc. But, it seems he has learned. This is definitely one of the savviest marketing campaigns.

This is definitely one of the savviest marketing campaigns. I'm not sure I agree with that. He's just released three singles simultaneously, while the Target ad is promoting a completely different song in 'Dreamer'. The $77 online subscription is so high that even some members of the org, myself included, are baulking @ the cost. The album(s) don't have a local release outside of the US!!! This is not the way to sell albums. I think it's right up there as the most disorganised & unfocused album promotion of his career. And that's saying something! It's bloody annoying because the music, by and large, is great!
