Small Club is the greatest Prince bootleg because ;

1. It has the best sound quality of any unofficial release of Prince's out there (i've heard legit releases sound worse than Small Club)

2. Prince played the 'perfect' aftershow set: u have Prince songs, u have covers, u have unreleased Prince songs, u even have a song made up on the spot!

3. The band is tight

4. The space between the songs is what gives small club it's 'soul'. Hearing band members tune up at the start, hearing Prince call out the next song ever so faintly ("Just My Imagination"), hearing the Holland crowd (lucky bastards!!!).

I think 'It Ain't Over' is great, sound quality and song wise...BUT it doesn't have that tangible 'soul' that Small Club has...how can it? The tracks are split between 2 shows so it loses that one-show feel.

Also...this is THE first official live soundboard release from Prince and the 1st soundboard release heard from Prince in a long time - of course ppl are gonna get xcited.

As mention b4...if P released the Nighttown show as a straight soundboard show 'a la' Small CLub i think ppl would be blown away. The Nighttown show convey's its 'soul' even thru the crappy audience recording floating araound.

PHEW!

I'm finished!

I cant compare Small Club to It Aint over.
I seem to be one of the few club members who hasn't recieved it yet (club box set). But I will say that Small club has some of the best sound quality and some really great moments on it...But there are some other Soundboard boots out there That rank high also,
R U experienced?(sabotage)
City lights
Trojan horse/Small club (trojan horse sounds better to me)
Fine line cafe
Parade around the world in a day(sabotage)
tons more... I guess you guys are speaking in terms of aftershows(soundboard)as far as " it Aintover " goes...
I'm still waiting for my SHIT to hit the mail...DAMN!!!

Yeah, I was there. I had been to the regular show (LoveSexy) in the Kuip-stadium in Rotterdam two nights before. That night, I was out in The Hague with some friends. We ended up in "'t Paard van Troje", having some drinks and listening to music (I remember some local band played that night, nothing special). Nobody knew about a Prince-aftershow. Around 1 am people were on stage setting up the instruments. People were asking what was coming up, but nobody could answer that question. We did notice that nobody was being let in no more, the place was not totally packed.
Lights went out, you could see people walking on stage picking up their instruments. They started jamming, spotlights looked for the musicians...I started to recognize people: Sheila, Dr. Fink, Levi, Miko, Eric & Atlanta, Boni and Cat. I was paralyzed! Crazy shit, I didn't know what happenend to me once I heard that distinguished guitar sound of Prince himself.

It was crazy, I was on a high 3.5 hours long. Highpoint must have been the solo in Just My Imagination, among many others. A crazy night which I will never forget. It took me 8 years to finally find a good cd-copy of the show. I found it somewhere in Southern Germany (of all places!).

Even though I haven't heard It Ain't Over yet (have heard some of it on live boots), I'm fairly sure it will never beat Small Club.

I think it's a combination between that fact that it's an old boot, the great songs, the soundquality, the lenght and the fact that it was an aftershow in Holland.

1. old boot
True, old boot meaning classic boot. Everybody has heard it and knows it for years. It's a reference for other live cd's and kinda nostalgic (important!!!).

2. great songs
True, but Prince played Just My Imagination a lot and all version are awesome!! Just listen to the version from Hamburg'88!!

3. soundquality
True; at the time there were not that many EX++ boots of live shows, which made Small Club kinda special. It was one the first perfect boots.

4. lenght
True. Small Club was and still is one of the longest aftershows Prince has done. The more great music, the better the show, the better the cd.

5. Holland
Face it; Prince is very populair in Holland and the dutch are very prominent in the Prince-news. I guess Prince has the most fans per square km in Holland (assumption... but it might wel be true ). Therefor, the dutch will shout the loudest about 'their' Small Club.

Conclusion: Small Club will always be the best Prince aftershow cd. Not only because of the content, but more like the legend it has become.

Happy holidays,
TheKid

Small Club is unique. In all the years Prince has done aftershows I can't think of one that would come even close to it.

Forest Nationals 95
Bataclan 94 + 2002

And many many more aftershows have been much more intense and better than Small Club.

Phunk

The fact is, there will never be another Small Club performance/recording. cry Not unless the following happens:

(1) a perfect, crystal blue soundboard recording!

(2) a complete show without any interference (as in no editing, no overproduction, no fading, no voice overdubs from Prince)

(3) Prince plays with the same band members for over 3 years to create the ingenious chemistry he and his band had that night in Holland

(4) Prince becomes more spiritual and less religious--his music today is nowhere near as sexy as it was back then (ie. You would never see or hear Prince perform a track like 'Stilll Would Stand all time' the way he did it back then)

I wish what I said wasn't true, but Small Club is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME PERFORMANCE!!! headbang

I totally agree with that. IMO I think that Nighttown is one of the best aftershows I've heard. The first jam session is beyond words!

I keep reading about this Nighttown performance in Europe..Nighttown Nightown Nighttown..whjt went down at Nightown? How can I be down with Nightown? (hint hint)

How can you be down with Nighttown? Via the magic of bootlegging. Nighttown is alchemy in motion.

It Ain't over is very good...but hasn't got a sense of urgency..it is just a party..with very good music indeed.

Nighttown 2002 would have come closer to Small Club I guess cause prince wasnt partying..but playing something out indeed. Why he just didnt put Nighttown 2002 in this box?

Now stop comparing and imagining things and njoy. Prince gave us something very special this time...it is almost as good as Princes bootlegs...now thats a compliment.

I´ve been 2 the 'Nighttown' (Rotterdam, 03-11-2002) aftershow and I think it´s a better performance than the 'Small Club' performance!

How can you compare something you've experienced (Nighttown) with something you've only heard ("Small Club")? It's the difference between climbing a mountain and reading a book by someone who did.

Unless you actually WERE at the famous "Small Club", in which case, I do retort.

I just got my ONA Live today, and have listened to it twice all the way through.

Now, seriously, does anyone really believe It Ain't Over is in the same world as Small Club?

It Ain't Over is quite good... but it really doesn't give you the goosebumps you get on Small Club. Small Club's solos come together in this manner that makes you start tingling all over (see Just My Imagination); It Ain't Over is comprable to a very good Paisley Park performance by the '95-era NPG--it's quite good. (For instance, if it had the same sound quality, The Park Vol. II would be about equal to It Ain't Over.) But please, don't tell me anybody thinks this is Small Club!?!

Now that I got that off my chest, I will go back to enjoying the very good It Ain't Over CD.

It is also semi unfasir to assess It Aint Over compared to Small Club because it has not had the time that Small Club has had to be overly familiar with it and to digest it all and take it in. But form what I can tell, it is a fairly good document of Prince in this time and era...

Ugh, please. The intrumental jam alone that SC starts with is mindblowing and yes, disc two isn't quite as strong, but FN is not even as good as other shows he has done in '95 and I'm sure you know it wasn't quite an aftershow either.

There are a lot of very good aftershows even great ones, but I still say SC was the best by far.
