I agree lyrically it could be better. But for me it is more about his delivery on some songs.
Sticking too many, or too few words into a line, with the result coming off clumsy sounding.

I think you have conditioned yourself to feel this way about his lyrics. His albums have always contained songs with banal lyrics.
Just start reading them from For You on, concentrate on them, and you'll realize that more times then not you could call his writing corny and trite.

No part of that journey detracts from the man or his genius. And as far as how the music currently makes one feel, you only need to read the various Lotusflow3r/MPLSound appreciation threads to get the sense that the majority are in a positive place with these works, because I believe Prince is in a positive place. Since 2000, he has had this positive, happy vibe about him and his music has not suffered in the least. Prince has only gotten better with time and his resolve is faith strengthening...imo.
