Your musical Beef with Prince

What's Prince's musical problem from your perspective? Many here seem to not enjoy the music. What's missing for u and when did u become dis-satisfied with the music Prince makes?

I don't know. I just think he's gotten real conservative. A friend and I were testing out his new studio monitors the other day and we put on Lady Cab Driver cause it was something we were both uber-familiar with. When the song got to the part where there's some gated Prince-ly lead guitar and that keyboard climax, we both looked at each other, and I said to my friend "What happened to this guy? Where did he go? He's just KILLING it right here." My friend agreed.

I just don't think the songwriting is up to par with his old stuff. I don't think he's as hungry to create something 'new' either.

He does have some moments though. I loved Black Sweat and I REALLY loved P-FUNK. MPLS Sound is better than alot of what he has put out in the last decade, but I'm mostly like 'meh'. He needs to go stand in the corner and think hard about his use of Auto-tune.

I don't really have a musical beef with Prince. I enjoy his music whole heartedly. Whatever he does is gravy with me, and I don't live and die on his music because of my hopes. Meaning, I don't let the past and expectations get in the way of the music.

That said, I wish Prince would remove his music from this planet a bit. I most enjoy Prince when he comes off as this detatched alien and the music sounds like it is from Saturn. I guess I am trying to say that I like his music when it is more abstract and "off" sounding, rather than traditional.

Again, not a beef, just personal taste.

I agree with Skywalker. And, yeah, NEWS is one of those Saturn sounding albums. I've not heard The Rainbow Children yet so I can't say about that.

Me too.

For the most part. NEWS has no lyrics/vocals. Rainbow Children is from Saturn only in certain places..mostly the segues/narrations. Songs like, "The Work", "Everywhere" and "Mellow" are very earthy and organic.
