Help needed with Rock compilation

Lotusflow3r has inspired me to make a rock cd that will be palatable to my work colleagues limited tastes. I've wanted to do it for ages.

The problem is once I started I had a shortlist of 32 track and really can't cull many if any. So I might have to do a 3 cd set.

I could use a hand with tracklisting each cd and the order as I know this is important in an album. Also I'd be glad to hear any suggestions for things I should include or trax I should dump and why.

I'd like to end each disc well. eg one will be Purple rain, one Gold and one Dreamer and Back to the Lotus.

Here are the trax in no particular order.

Electric Chair
Beautiful Strange
Chaos and Disorder
I like it there
Same December
Zanalee
Papa
Interactive
Calhoun Square
The Ride
Empty Room
Shhh
Peach
One Of us
Endorphine Machine
Gold
Joy in repetition
From The Lotus
Boom
Crimson and Clover
Colonised mind
Dreamer
Bakc to the lotus
Planet Earth
Guitar
Bambi
Let's go crazy
Purple Rain
Sohn of the times
The cross
Habibi
Fury.

Fanx biggrin

Thanks so far.

Is there a formula to track listing.

Eg Prince often has two upbeat trax to start and then a ballad. Beyone that are there any "rules"

I usually try to tell a lyrical "story" with my compilations, either per disc or an over-arching one for multi-disc sets. For example, they usually start out upbeat, then there's falling in love... then there are trials and tribulations, break-ups, bitterness, etc., and then finally redemption, or getting back together or ...

you get the idea.

But it should flow sonically as well. And make sure that you adjust the volumes to make them even, so that you're not following really quietly-mastered songs with really loud ones, etc.

also, where the hell is Dolphin? lol either version, though if you're using Back 2 the Lotus, the best part of the Undertaker version of Dolphin will be redundant.

back to sequencing, though, with this particular set, you might want to group them together by era. i'm looking at the list. haven't really devled into it, but an 82-90 disc, mid-90's version, and then one from 99 to now might work well.

it might help you to keep from having too many songs covering the same ground getting bunched together. and they'd each have a certain, distinct sound to them.

Dolphin, how did I miss it?

And Question of U.

I agree with arranging them fairly chronoligically.

I will keep the Chaso and disorder trax together, Maybe on dics 2 with Lotus being the basis for disc 3

Okay, here is my first draft. I haven't checked the running time of eac disc yet but 13 each dics with a total running time of just under 3 hrs. The track sequencing of each disc is still up fro debate but I'm settled on how to start and end them.

Let's go crazy
I'm yours
Bambi
Computer Blue
Darling Nikki
Sign of the times
The cross
I could never take the place of your man
Joy in repetition
Question of You
Electric Chair
Peach
Purple Rain

Interactive
Loose
Papa
Empty Room
Endorphine Machine
Shhh
Dolphin
Chaos and Disorder
I like it there
Same December
Zanalee
One Of us
Gold

From The Lotus
Boom

Planet Earth
Calhoun Square

I would narrow your list down to 12-15 killer rock songs. I wouldn't put anything that is religious or over the top either. If your trying to turn him on to P start small. Songs like Darlin Nikki and Computer Blue are fantastic but an aquired tasted. The Cross and another great song but not one I would include on a disc that I'm to introduce to a potential fan

You have a great list there... but you should narrow that down a bit. Good luck!

I also might add Shes Always In My Hair

leecaldon

Last December
Honky Tonk Women (from The Undertaker)
Cinnamon Girl
When U Were Mine (try the ONA version)
Witness 4 The Prosecution
Whole Lotta Love
Something in the Water (from Xenophobia 2002)
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (Xenophobia 2002)
Anotherloverholenyohead/Rock Lobster (any 2006/7 performance)
Johnny B. Goode. (2006/7)
All Shook Up (IndigO2)
Paisley Park (extended version or something live from 2002)
Red Head Stepchild

Not sure about keeping the C&D songs together - they're not his strongest from a songwriting perspective, and as much as I like them, the guitar work isn't quite as interesting as a lot of the other songs.

I think you should make I'm Yours less prominent - quite something on that first album (and I was gobsmacked he played it at the weekend) but it's not a track 2.

I'm not convinced Loose really fits on a rock collection imo

Oh, and make sure it's the SNL version of Fury, as it's vastly superior to the studio, video or any other live versions.
