Is it me, or do people who approve MPLsound over... Lotusflow3r, have no idea what Princes music is originally about?
Or to put it more blunt, don't even understand what good music means? Its not that I personally see Lotusflow3r as a musical masterpiece, but compared to MPLsound it almost is. On Lotusflow3r, Prince shows he is still 'hungry' about how his music should sound, he is still trying new things, and still seems to dare himself. MPLsound appears like a calculated attempt to copy his followers, without a lack of understanding what made his music great in the first place. No single programmed linn-beat or composition on MPLsound can measure up with what a great electro-funk album like 1999 has to offer. The fact you can hear a linn drum, or some cheap sounding synths on the album, doesnt make it comparable to an album like 1999, it first of all shows too many people are way too easy jumping on, based on superficial elements. 1999 is a great, innovative, very influential album: 9 out of 10. MPLsound is a disaster: mistaking bubblegum dance-pop with great, innovative dance-music, offering very mediocre compositions, and lacking any funk. To put it simple: 4 out of 10.

Hey, guess what?? I still didnt get around to listen to Lotus, and to me MPLS is the album I have been waiting for, so i give Lotus away for FREE, if you want.
MPLS is the orginal, Lotus is commercial! Prince I will always miss and love U.

It's you...
I'm swinging between both, but as Mplsound contains Dance 4 me and Ol skool Company how you can label those tunes funkless and plastic is something im not able to comprehend. One minute they want peace……
Then do everything to make it go away.

You do realize that any "cheap sounding synth" that Prince used on "1999" was like $3000-6000 list price?

Because I know songs like Lady Cab Driver, Automatic, Le Grind and Hide the Bone maybe? lol [Edited 3/28/09 14:11pm]

On which planet you are living? On MPlsound Prince is following the producers popular at this moment, failing completely. Lotus is far from commercial, Prince following his muse, not always succeeding, but a far more personal album then the contrived dance-pop on MPLsound. [Edited 3/28/09 14:21pm]

It´s you most likely and you shouldn´t belittle
other people´s taste in music just because we happen to enjoy a fun, little and imo, quite good album like MPLSOUND. You dispise it, fine. Others like it. GET OVER IT.

Guess what, riverpoet, the 1999 album is the classic it is BECAUSE of the Linn programming. Almost every song on the album uses the Linn drum machine. Please go talk out of your nose somewhere else.

1999 wasnt a great album because of the linn drumbeats, but because those beats were so brilliantly programmed. There is no single programmed beat on MPLsound that can rival with the 1999 album. In fact, the linn-drum sound is used as a gimmick on MPLsound, without ever being creative. [Edited 3/28/09 14:28pm]

It just goes to show that one man's trash is another's treasure. Personally, I think MPLSOUND is crapalicious (except for Better With Time) and I prefer Lotus by far... I have to let the novelty of it wear off before I decide whether it's classic or not. But I'm not gonna shit on the opinions of those who dig it. God bless us everyone.

In fact, the linn-drum sound is used as a gimmick on MPLsound, without ever being creative. [Edited 3/28/09 14:28pm] You´re absolutely right about the Linn programming on 1999 and on many other songs in the years 1982-1988. It wasn´t about using the Linn LM1 but about how he would program the beats, how he experimented with it, using guitar flangers and whatnot for certain effects, recording a beat in reverse mode etc. etc., and the beats themselves were of course much more creative. However, as a long time fan myself, I must admit that I immensely enjoy MPLSound so far and that is probably because I put the whole album in a different context and because I had VERY low expectations to begin with after hearing the snippets on his website. He´ll never make another Ballad Of Dorothy Parker, another Lady Cab Driver or another Something In The Water, and he´s for sure far away from creating another When Doves Cry, and yes, there´s more Linn drum creativity and experimentation going on in single songs such as Raspberry Beret or She´s Always In My Hair than on the whole MPLSound album but that doesn´t mean I have to hate that album. It is what it is and it´s good to see that he´s having fun again and that he´s not coming off in a patronizing manner again. Sure, just listening to the first few seconds of She´s Always In My Hair still gives me the chills "Linn"wise but I really don´t expect him to come up with stuff like that anymore. But this MPLSound album has at least a little bit of urgency behind it. Instead of coasting or catering to a certain audience he´s just having fun. Songs like Dance 4 Me are today´s Erotic City. That´s as far as he´ll ever come close to that quality again, and I´m not talking about "dirty" lyrics, those never really meant that much to me but I´m talking about catchy beats and hooks. Valentina has weird lyrics but the melody, the guitar solo and the beat are , IMO, some of the best he´s put out in years.I wish the song had different lyrics. I look at it more as a nice inbetween project, a fun thing rather than an album of someone who is hungry and on the verge of a breakthrough, which was clearly the case with 1999 and Purple Rain. A lot of musicians past their prime or past a certain age lost their fire and creativity in the past and , compared to many other musicians, Prince still comes up with fun stuff like this and is still like a reflection of what´s currently "hip" and happening in the music and entertainment industry. You prefer his creative 1980s output but keep in mind that the music scene ,his peers and the whole "zeitgeist" were completely different back then. I often see a lot of his current behaviour either as a reflection of or a reaction against what´s currently happening in the world of music, entertainment and , to an extent, politics. On another thread, you said :
"Is it all bad? well, lets be generous, the last track: No More candy 4 U was kind of a pleasant surprise. Campy, computerized rockabilly / new-wave that reminded me of Delirious and Jack U Off. But... for the rest? Plastic, generic dance-pop, not much better then that on The Slaughterhouse or The Chocolate Invasion. Sorry, but i can't rate it higher then 4.5 out of 10." Funny enough, that is the only song on MPLSound that I can´t really get into and that I will never listen to again, and the reason is that I dislike all the things about it that you like. Also, even as a long time fan, I still don´t like Delirious or Jack U Off. Never liked those songs, never will. I respect your opinion but I guess you compare Prince´s output too much with what he did two decades ago. How can you like Feel U Up, Shockadelica, Scarlet Pussy, Rockhard In A Funky Place and then dislike Dance 4 Me ? That is totally beyond me. Of course those songs are better than what he´s currently releasing but his new music isn´t really that bad, either. You´re right about using the Linn sounds and his Camille voice as a gimmick but, then again, do we really know ? Maybe he´s just using them because they´re part of his music and his style ? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

[Edited 3/28/09 14:28pm] i agree but let's shed the light on the musicians that played on that CD - MPLS is in fact a cheesy attempt at sounding funky imo - The problem i see with this new CD is that its too much Prince., its good to feel the energy of other musicians and songwriters collaborations on a project than just yours - Prince didn't make 1999 - Prince and Revolution created 1999.. and if you don't believe it look on the album cover and it says Prince and the Revolution spelled backgrounds.. Right now what I would like to see happen is for Prince to tour the country and release unreleased music as albums. And the Bria CD is GAWD AWFUL! As much as I want to like "Home" it doesnt go any where and that's what i make of the songs that are on her project.. they never mover.. LotusFlower I have no comment for that CD - Only song I like on there is "Dreamer" .. I've been a P-fan since 1982 and i've come to understand that everything he creates aint GOLD - but this time he fell real short, I dont know his motive for release this project was it for fans or to get new fans, is he trying to prove to us that he's still funky or relevant or to others.. what i did get pissed about is how he wanted to give props to the white house for being a brown house but yet he didn't even vote,, lol - u can't claim 2 be down unless u r down..

I think it is a hit among those who have been following his career for many years. For the casual listeners or the radio and mainstream people ,this album is anything BUT a hit. Funny thing is that a lot of fans around here had mixed feelings about this project when they read the first reviews. So did I , especially after hearing the snippets online. I for one am quite happy with all three albums. These will definitely have more staying power in my stereo than most of his other releases in the past five years. Good times ! So let me get this straight...
If Prince changes his sound and switches up and experiments, it's a bad thing... If Prince repeats the same formula and releases album after album of the same sound, it's a bad thing... What, in your opinion, constitutes a good Prince album, then? Because I hear Prince experimenting on both - neither of them sound like his previous albums, but both sound like Prince. Lotus is straightforward rock, while MPLSound is dancy, funky, and modern sounding. Are all the people who like The Rainbow Children but hate Purple Rain sheep, too? [Edited 3/28/09 15:45pm]

The least of which would be arrogance, ignorance and a narrow minded scope of what music really is about. Anyone who understood the real nature of music... Prince's or anyone else's... wouldn't make these type of post in the first place.

Mplsound, now pprince cant follow the producers popular at this moment, because those producers have copied prince sound for many years, so it cant be Prince copying them.
