The laughing woman behind the girl on the seesaw... Isn't that Clara Bow? And where's the woman in the Raspberry Beret?

I asked Jim in an Email how much it would cost for a painting like that and...this is the mail I recieved!!

Hi. You were asking about how much it would cost for a painting similar to Around the world? It would probably be at least $15,000 as it was a very hard apinting to do. My portraits and other paintings sell for up to $50,000 in the galleries.
Let me know what you think.

That is fascinating...but I can see why Prince chose the official cover.

This one's too realistic and strange. Too literal.

A little food for thought:
In illustration and cartooning there is the concept of iconography and illustrations from one end of a detailed spectrum to a super simplafied version of characters. Think the about the almost photorealistic subjects in this painting and a happy face or rather, the characters on the official Around the World in a Day cover.

I won't get all detailish but the basics are that the more the detail in a cartoon or illustration the little we relate too the illustrations and it doesn't allow for the imagination to be engaged or grow with the drawing. I think it has something to do with how the realistic subjects already have an identity and the more cartoonish simpler ones we can use as a way to "become them" in a painting or cartoon. Like masks we can put on and be in this other world if you will.

Thaaat is why...the official painting draws you in to the fantasy and world and maybe even feeling of Around The World in a Day. You can identify each mystifying character with each song...much like a game. That is why it was the best choice!

Wow. Gives a new slant and meaning to the album after all these years!

Thanks for the fabulous info and find EverlastingNow!

Wait!

When you look at the official Around The World In A Day cover painting...each character relates to a song on the album...

Then WHICH ONE in this alternate cover relates too an unreleased song?!

Could it be that man hugging the tiger? Is that anywhere in the lyrics in Around The World In A Day a mention of a tiger or fat man?!?!

Obviously the little black child with the North American flag is for America...the girl on the seasaw...the ladder...

...what about the older lady crying?

...the far right just next to the girl on the seasaw, a man with what, a phone?

...the kid playing in the sand...

...the airplane?

I wish the photo at the site was more detailed. Just fascinating and a great, great approach to the cover art work.
The type, logotype for Around The World In A Day wouldn't had fit with this painting too. I wonder if that came before or after. As a designer is say after... but who knows. Oh wait, I may try asking someone who helped design a few covers...stay tuned!

Fascinating stuff! I love this sort of info!
I'm glad Prince decided to stick with the cover that was eventually released, though; I think this one is just a little too literal.

I wonder what other alternative designs lurk out there...?
