Interesting gender flip on "Chocolate Box" The more I listen to Chocolate Box (yes alexandernevermind and the others I argued with about this track, it gets better in the second half with more instrumentation esp the staggered keysynths that accompany the refrain, but back to my point...), the more I listen to Chocolate Box the more I think about those songs that Prince has written that could easily be sung by a female.
First off, the song features a gender flip in that it is the man who is the object of the woman's desire, and he's telling her basically if you want to get with this, "suga nothin here comes for free." Then lays down some questions/conditionals... "if she ain't making bank / scared what a brutha has to say" asks what kind of car you drivin, proclaims it takes a "real woman," and complains about feet hurtin. Without trying to stereotype, traditionally and easily, these are all things that we find women saying to men in popular music: if you want to get with me, nothing comes for free; "if HE aint making bank and scared what a SISTER has to say"; asking what kind of car he's driving; it takes a "real man"; and certainly complaining about footpain in some sexy high heels. And of course there is chocolate box... leaving urban dictionary definitions out... Prince has used the box imagery before to refer to a woman's genitalia--with Sheila E's Toy Box. This isn't new for Prince to do of course--he's often written songs that could easily be sung by a woman with a few he/she changes... songs whose imagery in fact is usually more fitting (traditionally). (Sex Shoooter comes to mind with all its gun/shooting/phallic references as something that could with a few switches be sung by a male). [Edited 3/25/09 11:17am] "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

Y'know...I don't know that it's a gender flip per se. I think what he's saying is, "I'm not into golddiggers...so what are you bringing to the table?" And he's saying it in the only socially acceptable way he can.
Lord knows the trouble he'd get into if he expected a woman to bring traditional things to the relationship (cooking his meals, cleaning his house, having sex with him whenever he wants, bearing his children). So he talks to her like a man - ie, she better have a job. He's got a lot of goodies. She better have some, too. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

"I've got a box of chocolates..."
So, is the "box of chocolate" his "package", meaning his African-American (chocolate) penis? And if a woman sings it, would the "box" be the vagina? Usually, "box" means vagina. But if it's a "chocolate box" it could be the butthole. Or... sometimes a man's butt is referred to as a "mangina" in gay sex. So, Prince's box of chocolates could be the butt. But I am thinking it is his black penis, because "box" could also mean "package". And a black package (or box of chocolate) could mean his penis.

By the way, I'm not meaning to offend or unnerve or be silly with that last post. Just seriously trying to analyze the lyrics.
Besides, you all are supposed Prince fans, so you should be able to handle a little crudity. (Unless you are strictly post-JW Prince fans and are offended easliy.)

Interesting might make box the 1st listen of 3s OR, it could be another case of Prince using a term or phrase he heard somewhere and not knowing the true way to use it (see Jack U Off).

Jack U Off is another perfect example of reversed gender role... and I find it hard to believe that Prince wouldn't have known what it meant. They just compare things that are unrelated without using "like" or "as." The box of chocolates from this stupid song doesn't need to mean a genital no matter how hard you want it to. It just means that "going out with me/having sex with me/dancing with me/life with me/ IS LIKE a box of chocolates" So when Forest Gump says "Life is a box of chocolates" you dont need to rack your brains thinking about whether he is referring to his butt! I have to go back and read the lyrics again. I have to agree that you do hear these type of lyrics mainly coming from female artists. Rarely do you hear male artists expressing this type of message towards women. Actually, I find more male artists than women, expressing in their lyrics how they feel(or love) a woman or on the other hand, the machoistic (forgive me if that is not such a term, for lack of a better one) what they can do or will do to her "sexually" sort of bragging about their "chocolate box" so-to-speak. As, in the real world, you do find many females inquiring what a man has to offer "her" to "get with this." Not to give away details of the video, based on your observation made in your post, in the video, it does kind of looks like the male character is challenging the female in a certain point of the vid, as though he is saying to her "Okay, so what can you do or have to offer me , to get with this?" as she is doing the same...in other words, it works both ways.
