It use to bother me when I was younger, but now I know how great it really was at the time for an artist to do this wink

This is more embarassing:

Neither.

This.

it is what it is, and the record was pretty good.

The first time I saw it, my first thought was of John and Yoko's "Two Virgins" and remembering all the controversy that cover caused. I wouldn't have hung a poster of it in my room, but I never really got what the big deal was about it outside of Prince blatantly flaunting his androgyny...as if THAT was something new or shocking.

In a way, I thought it was cool and very daring, in the same way I thought that Elton John, Bowie, Jagger, Queen, KISS, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, Judas Priest, Lennon, Hot Chocolate - or any of number of bands really - flaunted their sexuality and made it a part of thier music.

Rock N' Roll IS sex, straight up. That's how it got got it's name, and i applaud it every time i see it.

I remember arguing once with a girl I went to college with who was WAY into Billy Idol, The New York Dolls, Bowie and The Rocky Horror Picture Show talking about how goofy Prince looked on the cover of some album or magazine, holding up the cover of SPIN with Billy Idol on the front next to the cover with Prince on it and asking her directly what the difference really was.

Far as I can tell, the only difference between what Prince did and what Bowie, Idol and Lennon did is that Prince was the only one who was black. If it only was a question of "who's more gay looking" than Rob Halford would have won by a mile.

That's nothing in the way of nakedness

just 2 years later I was in college (Drawing the Human Figure) having naked men & women standing in front of me in various poses

So Princes album cover was nothing

Art doesn't have to be about getting "the word out" or "accessible." It seems as if you are only concerned with consumerism or commerce. I bet Prince wouldn't change a thing about the Lovesexy project. It's his vision. And your puritanical and conservative gender views are opposed to the humanistic themes of Lovesexy. Have you heard the title cut or When 2 R In Love?

Stop the foolishness

It was a bad move. It was banned at retail stores and sold covered behind counters at record stores! As a result it failed to reach as many people and instead of getting positive attention it garned negative attention because nobody wants to see Prince sitting naked on giant flower with a dick next to his head eek

Give me break... The cover was obviously over the top. There were plenty of ways to show rebirth... that one was obviously a bad choice and frankly the album which is a masterpeice IMO deserved much better

Lastly I did not say it (Lovesexy cover) wasn't art... I said that the Parade Cover was. I will also say that the Parade cover was far more tasteful. Also that cover has nothing to do with Lovesexy the song or When 2 R in Luv. Those songs are about the love and lust between a man and a woman.

Your right though Prince would not change a thing... doesn't mean that it wasn't a bad move wink

I don't know if it was like that everywhere
Record Theather and 2 more record stores I frequented had the album(Cd)/tape in the regular section. I was 18 when I bought it.

I think the thing that may not have worked well for air play was the continuation sequence

This is an expression of what was happening on the Lovesexy tour, he was wild and didn't care

This harkens back to his Prince/Dirty Mind years (the hair and the leggings)

I find the cover a little weird, when it first came out I hear the vinyl's were in stores in brown paper sleeves cause the cover was too offensive.
The album is great though and tonight I FINALLY split the tracks up and loaded it on to iTunes so I can listen to different tracks. My favorite bit is the very end of lovesexy going into when 2 r in love, great to turn up loud in the car smile

i think it's one of the great album covers. people don't like to see naked men. prince is one of the only pop musicians to consistently put himself in the objectified, female role when it comes to how he presents his image. it was subversive in all the best ways.

also, it killed the album commercially, in the u.s., which certainly didn't seem to be what prince had intended.

remember though, in spite of the cover art, 'lovesexy' was almost as big as 'purple rain' in europe.

I admit to be too embarrased to ever purchase this album in a record store. I had to wait until the advent of online shopping, then i picked it up.

2 me it is like Prince is making a reference 2 a Renaissance painting...bsides that people grow up...the body is art it is constantly being drawn...anatomy is of the hardest art4ms 2 master.

Never understood what's offensive about it. Nothing on display, a naked man wearing a cross, and that's all there is to it.

To me, it's one of the greatest cover images ever.
