Thanks, but I meant a song from before these new records. I think the songwriting is much better here than it has been.

I am deeply satisfied with all 3 cds. "Colonized Mind" gets double the bow downs from me although I am deep into "Dreamer". Aww Sweet!!! I am glad that P was able to intro Bria without all the drama that he had with Tamar. 2nite I see as a club groove with a remix. Dang good trio. cool

ok...so its been a couple weeks now and so far Lotusflow3er is still getting a huge thumbs up from me. I listened to it last night and its actually sounding better...esp Boom, Colorized Mind, Wall of Berlin, and Dreamer. Dreamer is becoming my fave track...its so damned rockin I can't stand it. $ is still up there too...was from the beginning. I am thinking this album will be played for awhile, unlike Planet Earth which was became a coaster a week after its release.

I am just hoping Prince promotes this thing for awhile and not let it die fast like he did with 3121. More people need to hear this thing.

I disagree. And i just got done lauding you for your post in the MPLSound thread.

"Colonized Mind" is one of the best songs he's written this decade. It reminds me a bit of "Stairway to Heaven" (or even "Purple Rain") in the way that it builds and builds and builds (not that I'd I'd put it quite in the category of either of those - and it pains me to use such cliche tunes for comparison).

But by the end of CM, like the other songs I mentioned, the whole tune is just blistering like a good orgasm and makes you wish you could play it on Guitar Hero; although I could have used some more drums in the mix at the crescendo.

Quotin' myself because I'm listening to it right now on repeat and I take it back. The drums are BANGIN. "Colonized Mind" is amazing.

Agreed, that really is an amazing song. My fave right after 'Dreamer' and together with 'Boom'.

The thing that kills me about Colonized Mind is that it would be one of his best songs ever if it just had poignant lyrics. Complaining about your record deal for the hundred millionth time just isn't going to cut it anymore.

I actually like Colonized Mind as a track. I mean it's not much of a composition in terms of melody & chorus, etc. But it's a good piece of music, and a great performance. Perfect buildup. Actually similar to Purple Rain, as you say, which doesn't have much of a melody either (and I'm obviously not going to try to say THAT's not great).

I like the music on Lotus a lot, and I like how it fits together and builds as a whole album. I was really referring to songs as compositions like something another person might cover (like Crimson & Clover). Future Baby Mama, for all the negatives you can attach to it, it more identifiable as a song than, say, From the Lotus. I prefer From the Lotus, actually, but was noticing that the best compositions (in my opinion at least) are at the end of the album. Hopefully that makes sense.

But that's also what makes the album cool is that it's not bound to the typical structure of songwriting but out to create a bigger soundscape.

And Colonized Mind must be strong, because I was sort of off put by it in the beginning, and found myself being moved by the music.

and thanks for your comments on the other thread, I know it's not as interesting when you find out, but NDRU is my name, Andrew smile

Herb is my name, so there you go.

I like your critical thinking, so out of curiosity, what's the last really good SONG you think Prince has written himself?...Especially since you're citing a cover as one of the strongest tracks on the new record. I'm one of those fans who thinks his song writing has suffered a lot over the last decade or so.

I think every album has a good song on it. I just think he often uses songs simply as a vehicle for playing music (which is what he seems to enjoy the most), rather than playing music as a way to present a song.

So on Planet Earth? I actually think that The 1 U Wanna C is pretty solid as a pop song. I like Planet Earth the song, but in terms of songwriting I hate that the chorus only has one note. I think the ballads Somewhere Here on Earth & Future Baby Mama are "fully written" meaning they have complete melodies.

Love is a good song, Fury's pretty decent.

But those aren't my favorite songs, all things considered, just solid in terms of songwriting like we discussed. Someone mentioned The Word, which I think is one of my favorite recent Prince songs, but again I don't like the one note chorus (layered with harmonies as it may be) from a songwriting point of view. Still I really like that song. Prince works around any weakness through his musicianship.

I think there's more to the song than that.

He talks about parenthood, political parties, race, religion and personal responsibility. The point of the song seems to be getting back what you put in and the merits thinking for (and taking responsibility) for yourself.

I'm fully aware of that. My point is that there are so many potentially poignant lines he could have written, but instead he decides to slip in yet another reminder that he feels he was taken advantage of by the big bad record industry. It feels out of place and self-pitying.

Colonized Mind is one of my favorites off the album. He got alot out of very little. My least favorite is Dreamer because it sounds WAY too much like Voodoo Chile. Does anybody else love $? Wich reminds me, Prince has been doing a lot of "Camille" lately.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this disc! I've been listening to it nonstop since I bought it. There are clear influences (if not samples) such as Hendrix, The Who, The Kinks, Cheap Trick, etc. and it makes the record that much better. I absolutely adore his cover of "Crimson and Clover," even better than the original. My favorite songs on the disc are all of them (of course). However, "4Ever," "Colonized Mind," and "Dreamer" are my favorites.

Prince, please come to San Diego!

You and me both! I've loved this album from the very first listen, and despite the constant replays my feelings haven't diminished one bit. In fact, just the opposite. "LotusFlow3r" is my favorite Prince album since "Lovesexy" -- that's a 21-year span...DAMN! -- and in my all-time Prince top five.

I knew from the four previewed tracks that "LF" was gonna be a great album, but it actually surpassed my expectations. I honestly believe that if this was the follow-up to "Lovesexy" it would be a blockbuster-selling, critically-acclaimed classic with a handful of top 10 singles on it. Probably an Album of the Year Grammy-winner to boot.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You're gonna see ALOT of revisionist history with this album -- hell, the whole three-CD set -- as the focus shifts over time from distribution methods, subscription internet sites and Prince's own self-sabotaging habits to a straightforward evaluation of the material.

While Lotusflower is easier to stomach than the one trick, three legged, pony of Mplsound, it definitely hits the brakes quickly with The Morning After and the incredibly bad 4ever. They sound like rejects from an animated feature. Prince is obviously notorious for not sticking to one sound on his records, but he really shoots himself in the foot by trying to stick these two pop-clunkers on what is otherwise a step in the right direction of making an organic rock-pop album.
No hard feelings.

I agree about these two tracks. 4Ever is almost a parody of a love song. It's embarrassing to hear a middle aged man able to offer up nothing more than a series of one-dimensional rhyming lyrics. "I know, I know. Hips....rhymes with lips! Laugh? Hmm. Ooh I've got it! Bath!" It's very poor writing, and it has a lazy hook reminiscent of The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and Cinnamon Girl.

Your opinion is still wrong.

I think the point here is that an opinion is neither right or wrong when it deals with art. You like TRC because it excited your expectations. It delivers for you. I personally don't like Prince's childish attempts at philosophy and mysticism, so no matter how great the music and performing is the lyrics and overall concept DO NOT meet my expectations of what I consider a good song. There are many different types of songs. The ones I prefer are not better or worse, but they are certainly different from those found on the majority of TRC. Since your statement above accuses my "opinion" of being something it cannot be, (right OR wrong) I can pretty safely say you are either in possession of an extra chromosome or you are an intellectual coward. rolleyes[Edited 4/9/09 21:46pm]

Not too safely. lol There's always option #3: I was joking. I just thought I'd have a little fun and leave off the little smiley face. Don't you sometimes get tired of having to use the emoticons to qualify your words? I know it was random and I'm sorry I got you all riled up for nothing.
