i was so so so excited to get the new cd and locked myself in my room till i was done listening to both cds. im gunna have to agree with some and say that i think Lotus Flow3r was alot better than MPLsound. Boom is AMAZING! and im happy to see that so many people like it as well. 4ever, feel good, feel better, feel wonderful, and back to the lotus are also among my fav.

Lotusflow3r is alright. Honestly, no one throw a brick...I like Bria's cd the best! When I drive from Brooklyn to the Bronx for work, it is cool to listen to.

i think some of us expect him to be more with it. the slang thing is a big turn off for me, personally. not slang in and of itself, but the outdated slang. if he talked this way on the street people would look at him sideways. it's not that he never did silly things before; it's that he used to seem so far ahead, creating his own way. in the old days he'd use played out slang and it would seem like he was ribbing you on purpose. now it seems like he desperately wants you to think he's hip.

i dunno. i guess it's not nice to say such things. but it's honest.

i guess really that's the same complaint people (read: associates and band members) were making the late '80s, so what do i know, right? biggrin

To an extent, Prince always kind of did this though. He referenced Dynasty in Kiss, used words like "grind" in place of "fuck", etc.

Detroit

From the Lotus. . .cool spacey Jazz intro
Boom - love this one
Crimson and Clover - really love this one
The Morning After - Old school, Morning Papers/Cinnamon Girl kind of groove
4EVER - sounds like something from an '80's movie soundtrack. I like it though
Colonized Mind - I dig this one, has a Tom Petty kind of vibe to me.
Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful - don't care much for this one, but don't hate it.
Love Like Jazz - Sounds like a '60's chewing gum commercial
77 Beverly Park - Makes me want to go to Italy, cool though
Wall of Berlin - Love it
$ - Old school sound. Reminds me of Horny Toad/Delirious
Dreamer - Tied with Crimson and Clover as my favorites
. . . Back to the Lotus - Love that Prince Jazz

well... sort of. have you guys ever seen the movie 'house party'? you remember the bad guy characters, who are like, a year out of style? and how lame everyone thinks they are because of it?

'tired' or 'played' are not words that used to be associated with prince's slang and pop culture references.

i realize i'm talking to a wall on this.

in other news, after a bunch more listens, 'lotusflow3r' is really growing on me. i think '$' is one of his best songs since... hell! a few tracks on 'emancipation' were really good but none of them really seemed to push him out of safe territory. this though is different. really different.

i never thought i'd find myself praising prince for doing swing. biggrin

songs like this begin to put the colonel sanders outfits of the past few years into context. biggrin

Well, yes. I guess you do have a point here. However, having said that, I think the 'Forever' chorus, as simple as it is, does do it's job. Sure it could be better. But for me it's not so bad that it detracts from the from the 'song as a whole'. And we're back to where we started. biggrin

Well, I never caught the post where you said you loved Splash, and please forgive my lack of perspicacity for sarcasm on a message board. All that was apparent from your post was that Splash has less than stellar lyrics, and therefore, 4Ever's lyrics are not really bad so much as they are the standard for Prince.

I still maintain that a song with exceptionally poor lyrics (as I believe 4Ever to have) fails unless the melody is exceptionally good (such as is the case with Colonized Mind).

Nevermind. I like LOTUSFLOW3R a lot, and 4Ever is the only song I'm compelled to skip.

I love 4Ever as well. However, I think it's probably gonna be LotusFlow3r's "Take Me With U" or "Slow Love" -- a track that some people only come to appreciate/enjoy in time through the sheer greatness of the album on which it resides.

Not!
I like 4ever a lot. 'Take Me With U' and 'Slow Love' are the same mistakes they were when originally released.
I don't understand what Prince saw in 'Slow Love' to release it twice . . . .

I don't like Bria's. the song elixer doesn't even shine with Prince on it.
All those passive female all up under a man tracks . . . .
There are four songs I will listen to . . . 'Here I Come', 'Home', '2Nite' and Elixer because Prince is on it. The rest can join Ingrid Chavez' album . .

Best Prince album since TRC… no, Since Gold… no, since the Batman album.

+ Lots of guitar
+ breaking up the mundane, like the end of Wall of Berlin
+ No horn synths. He used real ones!

Totally disagree! It is a brilliant piece of work all the way through. Are you

really saying that Boom, Dreamer and $ among others are bland. You need to

Aside from the first and last tracks which sound more like TRC throwaways, this album isnt half bad. These two tracks sound somewhat self indulgent and to me do not really add anything to the album.

I suppose it is also unfortunate that the best song is actually a cover, but other than that I cant say there is a weak track on there. Some of the lyrics are a bit crap and the delivery of them a bit forced sometimes but that is par for the course these days. Musically it is quite exceptional, and in places it is down-right genius.

The album does suffer in places with the over-layered voices sometimes drowning out the rest of the song and the chorus on some of the tracks sounds a bit uninspired despite the build up created by a great verse or two - 4 Ever comes to mind on that score.

Stand out tracks for me are Colonized Mind, Crimson & Clover and $. What a little gem $ is!

Overall I think it is a nice flowing album that was obviously created as an entire project as opposed to a compilation of songs thrown together which has been the way since... well, probably since TRC.

Nice one Prince! But why oh why did you have to package it up with those other two dead ducks?

As I'm listening to Lotusflow3r right now, I realizing that music on here sounds mature, if that makes any sense. There is just something about this CD that just makes it sounds like its "Grown Folks" music. I feel strange writing that lol. Maybe it's the guitar that just does it or me turning 30, I don't know but this is just a new thing I've found with this CD as I'm playing it again and it's making the experience that much more satisfying. music

For me, there are two standout tracks on LotusFlow3r, Boom and Dreamer. The rest of the album is uninspiring, particulalrly after hearing Wendy and Lisa's new album.

When I heard 77 Beverly Park, it took me to Sorrento in Italy (where my family are from) and the cheesy tourist bars. Wouldn't sound out of place in a Tarantella either smile.

It makes perfect sense. IMO, "LotusFlow3r" is the work of an artist who has spent years exploring his medium, understanding and honing his gifts and is now creating at the height of his powers.

"LotusFlow3r" has soared into my Prince Top 5 to join "1999," "Purple Rain," "Parade" and "SOTT," replacing "The Gold Experience."

That's the thing, it sounds like he took the time to do this album properly. I'm loving that this and MPLS don't sound like a collection of songs patched together to show the world how versatile he his musically, the world already knows how diverse he is with music. It sounds like he's just doing music the way he wants to without proving a point and I can hear it with these CD's. He sounds free and it's sounds great.
