fandom isn't about "show n'prove" bullshit. it never was. nobody has to jump through hoops, you merely have to like whatcha like, and interact with others who do too. no matter which variant you and another person like, ya'll are in the same boat regardless.

U got some issues chick. All that effort u put into your catoons to shit on prince and bria shows me u want people to look at u. Its a waste of talent. Maybe u once identified with Prince's "rebel pose" but u couldn't grow with him at all. Stunted growth.
For someone to claim to be so positive, you sure do have a lot of negative bullshit to spew into the universe.

Does Dej's review lessen your Prince experience? If so, that's your damn problem.

Stunted growth? You've been saying the same tired shit for at least the last six years on here. Grow up. Everyone doesn't have to think confetti shoots out of Prince's ass.

it is what it is. If you look around, there is no general consensus on these albums.

I love Dreamer, I cant believe though that ppl still expect a classic album of any kind. Both lotus & MPL are like every other prince album from the last 10 years ,they have a couple of good tracks each but the rest is quite forgettable. I like a couple of tracks off PE, musicology,3121 ..... RaveUn2 has a few decent 1's ..... but really none r either better then Come. I must say i think the Gold E was his last good album & symbol his last really good album. Still the man is a legend & all the time he comes up with tunes like Dreamer, Colonized mind, crimson & clover, Ol'Skool company I will keep buyin these 10 track albums which have say 3-4 quality tracks on biggrin

you see I understand what you mean about hit or miss the last 10 years but then you list the GE and O+> as his last really good albums. When IMO those fit right in with Musicolgy, D&P, and Come who were also very hit and miss

You mean to tell me songs like Now, Dolphin, We March, Pussy Control and one of corniest and cheesiest songs ever written by anyone let alone Prince Gold aren't misses? If those aren't misses I don't know what a miss is

I could find just as many misses on Musicology, 3121, D&P and O+> and prior to the 1999 album the same pattern was true with For You, Prince, Dirty Mind, and Controversy.

Hit or miss is Prince most of the time other than 1982-1988.

Finally got a hold of both albums, initial thoughts on Lotusflow3r are positive although i still have another track to go. Dreamer the one I am currently listening to has abit of that Chaos and disorder vibe going on.

I agree there are also bits of TRC to be heard as well (especially on back 2 the lotus), particularily the live versions of the songs.

Does anyone think 77 beverly park has an almost greek feel to it?

All in all, it has a left a very good first impression. Now for Mplsound cool

disagree about the Chaos and Disorder vibe

definetly agree with TRC vibe

I thought Italian not necessarily Greek (close)

I enjoyed it too... I liked Mplsound just as much but for different reasons

I have to agree with you Alexandernvrmind I have never understood the praise The Gold Experience gets ... it sounds horribly out of date production wise...and did so even when it was released. A couple of good songs on it ... which is really no different to every release for the last 15+ years.

'Dreamer' is ok .... it's nice to hear Prince actually recording something 'rock' that does actually 'rock' for a change .... but i'm not really into the whole channeling of other artists ... JB, Sly, Hendrix, Ray Charles etc. I'm looking forward to when he starts channeling himself ... oh wait, thats the other album right? ... well maybe not.

This whole project is the same as everything else from the last 15+ years for me ... a few good songs (why the need to release 31 songs is a mystery to me ... it's not like he's overloaded with great ideas these days).

Still good to see live ... I thought Leno performance was pretty good.

Like with his other album, I'll listen to it more before forming a final opinion. As of right now though, it's much like his other recent serious musical efforts: it has gems that remind you why you first loved Prince, but it's also balanced out by a handful of ineffectual throwaways that remind you he's past his prime.

i think the production value of lotusflower is what will keep people listening. He didn't slam too many sounds into one chord, and there is a lot of breathing and negative space in the album.. I appreciate the subtle in things.. this def. contains some great moments.

From the Lotus - A rather inauspicious beginning, I must say. Why does he start weak? He did that on Planet Earth, too. Bring it, man! If the track really set up what's to come, I'd feel better about it. As it stands, it's okay. I don't hate it, but it didn't blow my socks off.

Boom - Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Nice melody...a fun, trippy sort of verse...then into searing guitar. Yes! Sometimes we go boom - oh, baby...I love it when you go boom. Do it some mo'.

The Morning After - What a sunny, hippy-dippy kind of fun this is. Makes me wanna grow some Marcia Brady hair, paint my jeans and put on some love beads. Someone else mentioned Manic Monday. Yup - same vein.

4ever - This song brings a li'l tear to my eye. I love the wistful Prince - the one who's still searching for that perfect someone. It's so relatable. The song itself reminds me of Splash - another one I love.

Colonized Mind - Full disclosure: I usually hate it when Prince gets political. I think that most times, he comes off as a simpleton - and it's not a function of whether I agree or disagree with him. Here, I think the sort of hypnotic, "drugged out" vibe of the music plays perfectly with his idea that people just go along to get along - not really thinking about the implications of anything. I really, really like this song.

Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful - I'm still not sure how I feel about this one. My sense is that it's too...vocal. Maybe it'll grow on me. Stranger things have happened.

Love Like Jazz - Oh, dear. What do I do with this? How did a song with such a wonderful title end up so...meh? This is the one I was most looking forward to (based on the title alone) and...wow...I'm just underwhelmed. I could see it being something great performed live, though.

77 Beverly Park - This instrumental put a squeeze on my heart. He starts and ends with insane guitar...like he's been working...and then comes out into a gentle, lovely fado-ish guitar ensemble. It's almost like the track represents a vacation from the work. It sounds nothing like Alexa de Paris...but it gives me the same feeling: a happy man wrote it. It makes me want to sit in a sunny courtyard, drinking wine and eating olives.

Wall of Berlin - Fun and funky. A trifle - but an enjoyable one. And when the guitar kicks in...have mercy!

$ - Geez...singing' about another Chelsea Rodgers chick. Fortunately, this song wears better than Chelsea. I could see shakin' a tail feather to this.

Dreamer - Okay, I admit it, I rushed reviewing the last two songs so I could get to this one. It starts off with a Hendrixian "Machine Gun" riff and just goes off from there. This song blew out all my fillings and made me wet myself. I looked down and all my clothes had been blown off. This is the track, people. The track. May God have mercy on your souls.

Back 2 The Lotus - He gives you about two minutes to recover from Dreamer...then goes off into another minute-long guitar tirade. After that, it all winds down into atmospherics. As I listened, I thought of the Wicked Witch of the West..."I'm meeeeelting! Meeeeelting!" Or Contact...when Jody Foster seems to be "outside" herself. An interesting ending.

Thank you. I enjoyed that. And I think we just about all got wet for 'Dreamer.'
Who thought we'd here that anywhere but an aftershow?

From The Lotus.../.... Back 2 The Lotus - 'Sensual Ever After' pt.2

Boom - Nice. The melody of the vocal reminded of a more mellow 'Rest Of My Life' from the I'll Do Anything sessions.

The Morning After - The cutesy-pie harpsicord is straight up Revolution era - like 'Teacher, Teacher' and it has that same goofy playful light feeling. Very poppy like 'Manic Monday' or 'The 1 U Wanna C'.

4ever - This one didn't stand out too much for me when they were aired on the radio and I feel pretty much the same about it now. I quite like the piano in there, but not really the vocals.

Colonized Mind - Liked it then, like it now - it's a condensed 'The War'.

Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful - Didn't expect much as the demo was completely forgettable, but I like it a lot. It's another Musicology/The Work type track, nothing much new, but not terrible and certainly has more of an edge than chuff like 'Get On The Boat'. I think this might grow on me actually, I quite like Prince's vocal delivery, he actually puts something into it, which he doesn't always do these days (screams, queeny rasps, etc).

Love Like Jazz - OK, pretty good. I prefer the more instrumental parts, some of it sounds like the Rainbow Children segue-type tracks, I can't think which one like a part of Digital Garden or Deconstruction. Lots of Rainbow Children-esque guitar noodles etc.

77 Beverly Park - O_o Was this intended as a backing track for a serenade ballad for Demis Roussos or Nana Mouskouri? "Just one Cornetto, give it to meeeee!!

Wall Of Berlin - Didn't do much for me when we heard it on the radio show, same now, another track that I don't actually like Prince's singing on, when he shuts up and plays, it's almost like something from 'The Undertaker', which is most definately a good thing.

$ - Sped-up vocal, this one had me moving in my seat, the rhythm section is great and seems quite unfamiliar for Prince, can't think of anything I'd compare it to, maybe the Revolution's version of 'Get On Up' or something. I had some Dream Factory-era Revolution vibes from this with the playfulness and synths in the background. Everyone should like this one.

Dreamer - Guitar hero mode engaged, all systems are go! Much more successful than other recent offerings like 'Fury'. Another track that would follow on nicely from 'The Undetaker' LP.

Overall: Generally speaking, there's been two strains of Prince's post-Millenial out-put, the more organic sounding Funkadelic/TRC-type material and the more produced Musicology/3121 type that follows on more clearly from the late 90s albums. Lotusflow3r is most definately part of the former strain, and the one I gravitate more towards. Not because I'm particularly over-fond of Prince's guitar work, but because it sounds more natural and progressive for an artist of Prince's age, stature and ability.

I'm impressed most of all by how uncluttered and lacking in chintz a lot of the material is. The whole set sounds like it was made in a more relaxed state than some recent albums (Musicology, 3121). None of the tracks outstay their welcome, and it's cohesive and consise. No track stood out as being terrible, there's a few that were instantly likeable and a few that sound like growers. Add in 'Crimson & Clover' and ladies and gentlement, I do believe we have a great Prince record!

Lotusflow3r is easily the best Prince album in more than 15 years, I was going to say it was refreshing to finally seem him grow up and create something a little more mature, but then we have MPLSOUND, the dumbest Prince record of all time.
I think it really sullies my fond memories of the real Minneapolis sound.

This is the first Prince album in a long long time I haven't just put aside with a cringed up face after one listen never to be played again.

Another boring, plodding clunker from Prince.

Layered, redundant choruses, lyrics as deft as a fourteen year old honours student and embarrassing balladry. Feel Good, Feel Better is a cycling bore with not an iota of invention or musical worth. 77 Beverly Park is laughably bad and Love Like Jazz is easy listening slop, seemingly dripping over here from his latest proteges colossal failure of a record. 4Ever should be drawn and quartered, Boom is noodling gone ary, The Morning After has a fine enough melody but it's over produced, plastic and pulled down by the lyrics. Colonized Mind is a by the numbers adult contemporary rock song with inane lyrics outdone only perhaps by Wall of Berlin.

The only song worth salvaging from the mediocre heap is 'Dreamer.' It definitely owes more than a nod to Hendrix, but no matter, it's a fantastic rocker and arguably the best job he's done at putting a rock song to record. $ has it's moments but struggles to keep above the filler category. Would have made a good b-side. Had the rest of the album had the same verve as Dreamer, maybe it would end up being memorable for something beyond it's jejune lyrics and lifeless music. The intro and outro tracks may have worked well as bookends if the rest of record if it wasn't shelving a lexicon of irrelevant pop.

Grade: C-

I disagree but very well written. A

I've only played Planet Eaarth twice so pretty low bar here.
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

This is all based on first impressions, I have yet to have the time to delve into the depths of the lyrical content. Seems like there’s a lot of fluff and filler though so... Bear in mind that my measure of success is that 2 disc BANGER Sign o’ the Times… He set the bar pretty freakin’ high!
-----

From the Lotus. . . – REALLY DUDE??! An instrumental as an opener?! Puhleeze talk to the hand it’s like a sound check for a CD…

    Boom
    – That's more like it!!! This is funky with a nice soft lyrical section. Nice dirty guitar grinds…

Crimson and Clover – Without question in the top three on this record, hands down… funny that it’s a cover and I wish he’d do more of that because much of the rest is gonna be meh!

The Morning After – Lawd help me!!! Throwaway track here with silly lyrics and a cheery, bouncing musical score akin to the Monkees.

4EVER – Really good song although the chorus drags after a few repetitions.

Colonized Mind – The 2nd best track to be found here on Lotusflower. Never heard anything like it. He’s noice when he’s innovative. Real noice…

Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful doh! He’s really stretching here and it’s not nice… if you get all fammy-fam for screechy Prince then this is your anthem… you really lost me at “groove to the purple rock & roll” mega-doh!

Love Like Jazz – Again what’s with the sappy lyrics?? This is like Prince’s version of anything Barry Manilow… also very loungy… where’s the red velvet?

77 Beverly Park – the first 46 seconds are DOPE!! aaaaanndd once again he loses me with this ripped off version of “That’s Amore” or some shit… an instrumental track that makes me ask, “’Scusi Signore but I seem-a to have lost-a my Gondola…”

Wall of Berlin – Lawd where do I start? Some of the most ridiculous lyrics yet and I don’t mean as in avant garde… the only thing this track has going for it is some great guitar noodling but aside from that… shrug

$ – I wish this was a Camille track (it has the voice) but its more like how much can 50yr old Prince youth it up by extensive use

Dreamer – Best track on the whole wrecka even if he’s ridin’ Jimi’s tip like a rodeo for that one riff… but musically and lyrically this one stands out… 5 stars!

. . . Back to the Lotus – a musical outro, awww how thoughtful… this coulda been a SONG!! and what's with all the distorted chatter???

Sorry Prince but Lotusflower has me saying MEH!!

star star

Dreamer is overrated. Borrows to much from Hendrix.

No it's not. Voodoo chile all over but Prince's way. Love it. A killer tune.

Seriously. Wha-wha-what?
He's always had a finger up Jimi's anus. It rarely feels as good as this.
