i've got a major prob with the recorded version of 'purple rain'

i dont know if anyone agrees but the guitar solo is way too quiet in the mix! i dont like the tone either, imo its weak. such a shame cos it is the highlight of the track. it definitely needs to be re-recorded. but it will never happen though

I disagree. It's perfect the way it is.

Just to quibble a bit: You do realize that the "recorded" version is a live performance, right?

I hope you realize not only was it a live recording, but the very first one out there recorded at First Ave! How cool is that! Truly amazing, once you think about it. I honestly cannot complain about that. I just think, "wow, really"..that's incredible!

There is lots of chance of this happening because it always tend to pop up at big concerts. Should be an wish easy tp be granted when he starts going live again.

yeah I agree, I like the overall tone though, but it's just a shame for a gem like that solo to be so quiet

Prince has always buried the guitar too far dow in the mix to suit my tastes.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Very true & very frustrating.

....With the exception of quite a bit of C & D; which is one of the MANY reasons I love that album! I seriously don't understand why so many fans are anti it?

agreed. i wish the solo was mixed louder. i think the tone it a bit thin too. but it works well with the overall sound of the song as a whole.
if it ever gets remastered may they can up the fader just a little bit. no need to re-record it.

I can't see the problem here if you have decent sound equipment.

Let's not forget that most of us would own copies of this album that were taken from analogue recordings 25 years ago. I reckon if you bought the re-release on 180 gram vinyl it would sound alot better.

A remastered version of this - and other albums is WAY overdue. Will it ever happen? Doubtful.

it took you 25 years to come up with that ? razz
no just kidding.
i don't agree with you.. i loved purple rain since the first time i heard it,
But if you watch the live recording of it (first avenue 3rd August 1983), it'll be a totally different song, and Much Stronger!

what equipment are you using to play back the track, and what source, as i've been listening to it for years and don't think there is a problem with the mix. if you are listening from from lossy source, or with some crap setup or psuedo surround mix it might sound odd

whilst the basic tracks were recorded live at first avenue on 3rd august 1983, all of wendy's guitar parts were rerecorded by prince in the studio afterwards. it was wendy's first performance with the band after all

And also her guitar seemed fairly out of tune by the time they got to purple rain that night.

I agree C & D must be one of his most under appreciated albums.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Here, here. The biggest and most frustrating example being Joy In Repetition. He got his guitar level spot on with 'The Question OF U' , though. I sometimes feel the drums are too intrusive on that cut though. However, i think thats because i am so used to hearing the live performances of it and rarely visit the album track.
