Was Prince proven wrong? this is my first post, but i have to reason this, as i am not sure if others have.
is it not true, when reflecting about his O2 marathon, that Prince said something like "only I can break that record" in relationship to his 21 nights? i stand to be corrected if he did not say this...but, his brethren, Michael Jackson, is said to have sold out 50 shows already, more than twice the record set by Prince. was Prince proven wrong? Time will tell if Mr. Jackson actually shows up to 50 concert.
My guess is he'll come down with some sort of mystery illness or injury. God, the worse thing about Mike doing these shows at the O2 is people comparing him and Prince. Let's see what happens around show 15. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

the 50 show thing has been all over the news where i live, and here's a snippet of what i read online:
Tickets for Michael Jackson's 50 live dates at London's O2 arena have sold out, meaning that a staggering one million tickets to see the singer have been bought in a matter of hours.
Dates for the summer residency, beginning on 8 July, had been extended to 50 nights – one for each year of Jackson's life. The singer is said to be "thrilled" by the response, though no doubt his promoters are even happier. "Not only are these concerts unparalleled, these records have never been broken," said Randy Phillips, of promoters AEG Live. "We knew this was show business history, but this is a cultural phenomenon". http://www.guardian.co.uk...-sells-out I also wonder whether he will make it through this, but...DAMN! I thought MJ was only doing 10 shows and he'll be comitted to a sanatorium before he's reached 7 don't sweat it, he won't break prince's record. although, to be fair, who cares? prince isn't superman. i just don't think mj will beat his record tho. technically i guess he beats it as soon as he's sold the tickets to more than 21 nights. but i don't think he'll be able to physically perform that many nights in a row. he's been sitting around playing nintendo wii and eating cheetos for the past 12 years. come on now. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Michael Jackson is rusty, I'd be surprised if he doesn't fall apart after 5 nights. Just like his sister Janet HE CAN"T HANG!!

like peeps have said b4, if jacko stays here in the uk from june 'til next february playin shows, it leaves the rest of the planet 4 P 2 cast his spell over.
oh, and the bookmakers r takin bets that jacko doesn't get thru' the shows, and i'm thinkin that may b a betta way 2 make some money than sellin on jacko tickets that may never happen ! (jacko used 2 b rusty, now he's more of a magnolia colour)

It really doesn't matter, because the circumstances are different. MJ only toured 3 times, last time in 1997 and these shows are promoted as his final concerts. Prince tours regularly.

well, that is actually the original question...i am not sure if around the release of 21 nites, that Prince actually said something along the lines of: only he can break the 21 nite record he had established. looking back, now...if he did say it, perhaps it was actually an indirect call to MJ to pick up his ass, because surely Prince knows what Michael is capable of doing. tickets to more than 21 nights. but i don't think he'll be able to physically perform that many nights in a row. For example, Prince's shows were spread over a period of 52 days in August and September. 31 days of August, 21 days of September. 3121, who'd have thought? Jacko's are spread from July 2009 to February 2010 and there aren't any in October, November and December, so he has a 3 month break. Maybe he'll make it through them all, maybe he won't, but either way I'm amazed that he's sold out 50 nights already. RIP

I sure hope they don't pay Michael upfront. Cuz you know what?...after 8 or so shows..Michael is gonna be NO where TO B FOUND..... Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Didn't Prince actually perform about 42 concerts, if you count the aftershows ?
That's a mentality which i think not many artist have brought up. [Edited 3/13/09 21:42pm]

Has MJ even sang live since the 90's on? Always sounded like he lip synched and eked out only a couple real notes here and there over recordings?
No doubt he had talent when younger, but all normalcy and function seem to have evaporated and I have to agree w/ many here on questioning if he can even make it through 3-5 shows without claiming some ailment.

The quote from the article is "I don't expect someone to break the record."
Thats a lttle different from "only I can break the record."
