The hallway speech version of this track, man, there is simply NO PRECEDENT for music that sounds like this...there just...isn't any...ever...there CAN'T be. It's NOT POSSIBLE. Jimmy Jam (or maybe it was Terry Lewis, I don't remember which) once said "Prince is one of the most creative people in the entire history of creativity." That is PRECISELY what Prince is. The hallway speech version of this track is PRECISELY that - one ofthe most creative things int eh history of creativity. I kid you and embellish not. People say he is one of the most influential/important musicians of the 20th century; no, no. MUCH MUCH more than that. It is impossible to overstate this man's genius - he, after all these years, all the music, everything, STILL has not gotten his due for the very simple fact that the words, the gestures, the overtures DO NOT EXIST which would constitute giving the man his due.

Computer Blue is one of, if not THE favorite song of mine from P. This piece is an emotional rollercaster. Anger, Lust, Pain, Redemption, Salvation the music tells the story. It´s one of the first songs I learned as I started playing guitar. Even today I get goose bumbs from playing the solo, fathers song part.

I just wished he would have released the full studio recording of this song. It kicks the crap out of the shortened one on the album.

Which one?

the 12:01 minute version
the 14:04 minute version
the 11:34 minute versin
the 13:29 minute version
the 11:57 minute version
the 12:27 minute version

And I totally agree
He wanted a full version for the movie but they said it was too long
probably so,
But it works out and the vibe is definately wild
I love the movie performance, the moves the dark naughty look they had
My favorite

ahhhhh!!!
Father!!
the son is gone

Should I got 2 church on Sunday
Should I stay at home and pray
Should I try 2 make her happy
Should I try 2 make her stay

the lady next 2 Jill seems 2 like it

I've got one over here someone sent to me on cassette in the early 90s that runs upwards of 19 minutes. Dunno where he got it.

I agree .

When I first heard this song back in 1989 my jaw dropped. I could not speak for at least 10 minutes after hearing this for the first time.

lowerregister and muleFunk:

You guys are SO RIGHT. nod The 11:57 (excuse me, scififilmnerd) version is one of the most masterful pieces he ever recorded! I dig "Take Me With U" as much as the next guy, but c'mon! Had I been an exec at WB, there would have been NO hesitation whatsoever on my part to drop that song so that the full "Computer Blue" would fit on there...

I think the 1999 album spoiled me for Purple Rain, because I was accustomed to LONG songs. Every song on 1999 seems like an extended remix.

Prince once said that "extended versions" are just the original song before album/radio edits. eek In that case, there should be a lot more material out there!

Purple Rain was a perfectly concise pop/rock album, and look at how much it still delivers.

I always thought it was one of the weaker songs too.

It was always one of my favorites - although I always pretty much considered "computer blue/darling nikki" a twofer.
