That soo looked lip synced. Even the music went quieter in the backgroud when they where still miming.

Large parts of it were re-recorded later on in the studio because the initial takes were unusable - it is an assembled piece on the overall. That includes the drums from all of the cuts as well, which is why they stick out from the mix in such a peculiar way. If anything ,it was a "lipsync in reverse" at some parts. Prince had to match his voice to the original takes.
Well, the whole thing works, so I have no complaints about it.[Edited 3/10/09 13:53pm] Exactly

Well, the whole thing works, so I have no complains about it. I love watching it and consider it a lot of fun, but I still think the explanations about it are weird. There are clearly parts that are lipsynched--It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night is the most obvious instance. He is frequently "singing" without a microphone in parts of that song. I know the official answer is that it was supposed to be all live but then parts of the video were not usable or something like that. What I don't understand is why you would assemble a band of great musicians, put them on a soundstage, give them all their instruments, get all the cameras and recording equipment needed, and bring in an audience...and then not just have them do the same concert that they've been doing for months, have rehearsed, and are old pros at. Couldn't they just have done the concert there at Paisley Park, recorded it, and made that the concert film? "Love your reply Efan" I never thought about that

No, I'm not. I'm wondering why you would assemble a band and have them lipsynch and pretend to play instruments for a concert film. Your condescending notion that I don't know what Prince concerts are like is nonsense. I'm not saying that every one of his concerts is the same. I'm saying that the band had been on the SOTT tour and would have been ready to play a kick-ass concert on the Paisley Park stage if they needed to be. Are you saying that Prince and that band weren't talented enough to put on a concert that was at least as good as the recorded one? again ..he liked the per4mance that they did when they original did it when it was captured on film ..however camera angles etc didn't have close ups, hence he reshot it at paisley keeping the majority of the audio intact man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

No, apparently the audio was (for the most part at least) rerecorded as well. So Efan's question is a very valid one. I've often asked myself the same thing. There really doesn't seem to be a logical explanation. But then, it IS Prince we're talking bout right? sure there was overdubbing done but the music and vocals r pretty much they way they were recorded, 4ever in my life's main vocals were re done but the whole segment of "it" was taken from the actual concert they did man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

"Sleep Around" was, or at least part of it was; I'm not sure about the rest of the songs since I haven't watched it in forever. But on "Sleep Around," he had a shoutout to "Oprah!" in there where he was nowhere near a microphone. I guess I should have been more clear....I was really only thinking about the first performance..... my bad.... not sure about Sleep around.... Prime aka The Kid
