Prince Lip synching! Prince should be immensley proud that in all the performances i have seen whether it be on tv live or concert live he has never lip synched. I wonder if he has done? does anyone know?
When i saw him at the o2 every note was live. And he did 21 nights of this? A man that age still live, screaming, throwing himself around. That deserves respect and to me that shows he respects his audience. If you mime you may as well sit down and put the CD on and we just all sit and listen. Be respect to prince for that!

He lip synched for the 1994 World Music Awards doing The Most Beautiful Girl in the World and the 1995 American Music Awards with that Gold Experience Medley. Those are the ones I can think of right now. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Some shows will only allow lip syncing 2 ensure a certain level of production quality. [Edited 3/10/09 7:14am]

I think it's admirable that Prince has never lip synched (or has lip synched very few times.) That's the mark of a true artist.

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold was usually lip synced, xcept on Rave 2000 concert. 'SOTT'/'PITS' on MTV Awards '87... only his mike and guitar were live apparantly. [Edited 3/10/09 7:19am] 3121... Don't U Wanna Come?

The real early stuff like American Bandstand was lip-synched. But I'm pretty sure Prince has only lip-synched when the promoter/televiser absolutely demanded it.
If it was up to Prince, he would never choose lip-synching.

Yes he has, some venues require it especially stadiums like the Superbowl.
If you knew anything about concerts and running sound, you would know that when singers are not going to be singing (during a solo, break, etc etc) the soundman usually mutes his/her mic to prevent background noise and/or feedback [Edited 3/10/09 7:44am]

the first time i saw Prince on tv,was when he was on solid gold, performing "little red corvette".didn't think anything about it at the time, but looking back at it,that was a perfect performance, sounding just like the released single.but, hey,Prince won me over anyway.
he's a talented musician and he's got an incredible vocal range!

I thought that for a brief moment during Let´s Go Crazy but, as far as I could tell, it was a live performance. Then again, that small bit when he did Let´s Go Crazy did look like he was lipsynching but I guess he wasn´t. I remember that long ass thread back in the day here on the org when people where wondering whether there were a couple of playback moments during Lovesexy in Dortmund, and ironically that was also the part when he did Lovesexy. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

He lipsynched on Oprah and I think there are times in his concerts when he has prerecorded some of his vocals to use as background vocals or to supplement his own.

The whole Soul Train performance was lip-synched, "Face Down" on the Chris Rock show as well, both performances of "Emancipation" at the Brit Awards and i think the "BET Awards" were synched, "Pussy Control" at the VH1 Fashion Awards was mimed, etc., etc., etc.....

I dont recall ever hearing he ever did any "lip synching"
If he ever did, it was probably absolutely necessary. Say it's just a dream...

If he ever did, it was probably absolutely necessary. Several users including me gave you information of several occcasions where he did lipsynch. And that information is true (except for the superbowl performance). And of course it wasn't necessary, Prince freely chose to "perform" that way for whatever reason. Not true. Certain television productions will not allow live performances for quality control purposes. Prince doesn't have to perform there, nobody forces him to do it. But obviously it's not always about promoting "real music by real musicians" but only about promoting new product. And especially the Brit Awards performance of Emancipation was a letdown. Most of the other artists performed live, only "The Artist" was lipsynching. Why ? [Edited 3/10/09 11:36am] [Edited 3/10/09 11:37am]

I don't think the Chris Rock performance was lip synced. It was lipsynched, definately. They used an edited live track for this.

I can't believe people are still speaking all that shit about him lip-syncing in Superbowl ("... but, his guitar wasn't even plugged into an amp!").
He apparently also lipsynced at the Emancipation launch party (at his own soundstage of all places), but his child had died a few days ago, so it's perfectly excusable. The Pussy Control performance was lip-synced too, but he really wasn't even trying to hide it with his gestures. The "Emancipation" performance(s?) in the UK, and the early American Bandstand thing. Which by the way, is a hilarious thing to watch even to this day.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
