HELLO (Fresh Dance Mix)

I just gave this jam a listen for the first time in many years and it brought back a ton of memories. To me this was such a Revolutionesque style song with a tough drum beat, awesome guitar work, Wendy and Lisa sounding beautiful, Prince letting his anger toward the Paparazzi out in a song instead of in public, and a nice confusing talking speech at the end of the song that left me with a question mark over my head as a youngster when I listened to it.

Hello Hello Hello Hello
Hello Hello Hello Hello

I tried 2 tell them that I didn't want 2 sing
But I'd gladly write a song instead
They said okay and everything was cool
'Til a camera tried 2 get in my bed

Hello My bed Hello Hello

I was sittin' pretty with a beautiful friend ("Oh darling")
When this man tries 2 get in the car
("'Ey Prince, c'mon, give us a smile eh?")
No introduction, "How U been?"
Just "Up yours, smile, that's right, you're a star!" (Star)

U call 'em bodyguards but I call 'em my friends
I guess I'm used 2 havin' 'em around
And cameras by nature like rewards
That's the trouble I get when I'm Uptown

I'm not afraid to die (Don't be afraid)
Oh no, there's a better place ('Cuz there's a better place 2 go)
I eat what I want (U can eat what U want)
Whole wheat toast (Anything is cool in moderation)
And I'm happy, and that's for sure

We're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
There's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try and understand
A flower that has water will grow
And the child misunderstood will go

Hello
Hello
Hello
Hello

Everybody we're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
There's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try and understand
A flower that has water will grow
And the child misunderstood will go

Our record stands tall, u know
Give us time and love will show

Hello
Hello
Hello

who else remembers this song and what do you think of it. we don't talk about these old 12" gems as much these days anymore so discuss please.

I remember seeing Bob Geldof on MTV calling Prince a jerk for not partaking in We Are The World. I was a fan of the Boomtown Rats as well as P, so I was kind of taken aback by the remark. I think Prince's official response before the Hello B-Side came out was that he "would have just clammed up in front of all of those great musicians". Prince was seemingly pretty shy back then. He wouldn't go up the podium to accept awards, even if he was in the audience.

I think Prince actually did the right thing in issuing 2 versions of 4 The Tears In Your Eyes to the project and explaining himself on Hello.

Hello - Fresh Dance Mix is a treat. That period of time, with Prince 12" records versus the single mixes, was fantastic. It was like dissecting a novel, when you only had been given the cliffs-notes previously.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I love the long version that adds the "shoe" speech.

Love Lisa and Wendy's voices on this one. And the beat is harsh. I love how they spoke up for giving to charity before it was fashinable, the whole We Are Th World bs scneario. He went to Carlos n Charlies restaurant on Sunset instead lol. I went there years later to check it out lol. Bitch Betta Have My Money was playing in the club area.

Come now..isnt life better with a pair of new shoes?

Imago

It was my favorite maxi-single bside for years.
It has a 'cold funky' sound to it, not quite divorced from new wave music and with one foot firmly implanted in the 'Minneapolis sound'.

I'm surprised it hasn't been remade by any recent electronic acts cause they song is begging for a dancefloor update drool .
