I don't think the name change to a symbol would be, because on its own that is kinda cool and has a very rock star vibe to it. It's the corresponding battle with WB and writing "slave" on his face that tarnished his image.
I think if he had served out his tenure at WB with professionalism, he would've put out superior work and been more popular now.

I think if he had served out his tenure at WB with professionalism, he would've put out superior work and been more popular now. Somehow I agree with you on the WB part. I know he said he felt restricted and he saw where the music business was going. He wanted to own his own masters and be totally free. On the other hand, if Prince would have stayed with WB I'm sure he would have had to compromise and sacrifice his creative freedoms. It wasn't all good with WB and Prince towards the end seemed very unhappy with them then he started writing slave on is face which was kind of self destructive. The quality of his work may have been better, and he would've been under the gun to make music, but with Prince that's never been a problem. Now that Prince is free and is truly his OWN man in the industry I don't think he's been as popular with the newer generations like he was with us in the 80's. Don't get me wrong, Prince will always be a LEGEND and we can never take what he has done for the world of music for granted. He will always be great, however, I think just because an artist severs ties from the great and almighty music industry machine does not necessarily guarantee that his music will have the same appeal, popularity and ease of distribution the way it was before.

I've heard interviewers ask him this question and he has never said that he regretted his move from WB. He belives in fate and said no matter what the outcome it was just time for him to move on. [Edited 3/6/09 13:13pm]

[Edited 3/6/09 13:13pm] He would never publicly admit that - but I'm sure he has moments of self-reflection where he regrets it. My point is not that he broke ties with WB -- it's the manner and the timing of how he did it.

His personal relationships. Just a guess. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I was going to mention this too ... I'm sure there are plenty of times when he misses old friends/lovers/colleagues and wishes things would've turned out differently. I mean, everyone does that, so why should he be different?

well lets assume his amsomnia is due to deeply embedded suppressed regret..

I don't know exactly, but possible something that Prince procrastinates about, or something that he didn't do.
A lot of regrets end up leading to a revelation in your life, so the experience turns out to be a blessing in the end. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I'm hoping that there is an album between SOTT and Lovesexy (not the Black Album either) -- an album that would've been the best of his career -- that he regrets not putting out so much that he decides to release it as-is, untouched and uncensored.

One of Prince's regrets would probably be not owning his masters. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I'd say not owning his masters. [Edited 3/7/09 8:18am]

Imagine if he had owned them from the beginning - where we'd be now. Almost like the last 15 years of record-label angst had never happened. Think of all the songs that are directly a cause of that feud!

Prince doesn't seem to dwell too much on the past and lives in the everlasting now.He belongs to the few people that are able to move on almost as if the past never happened.
He believed in the things he did at the time and like every person that continues to grow he will hopefully learn from past mistakes and not repeat them. love the one who is Love!

I think so too, he would want to have changed the terms of his contract with WB.

in our chat with him as part of the OnStage Xperience of 2003 someone asked him and he stated "i don't dwell on the past. what was, was I am more concerned with what is and what is next". I think he feels that what happened good or bad got him to where he is and he is at peace with it. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

Wow, that's a great attitude to have. I need to adopt it and use it in my own life. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
