If Prince is jazz, jazz REALLY died.

If Prince is jazz, jazz REALLY died.

PLEASE!

An artist incorporating jazz influences into his music does not make him a jazz musician.

Elaborate.

It is a response to a remark Candy Dulfer made. She said that since Miles Davis died, Prince is the only jazzmusician worth mentioning.
Or sumthing. I took this from the news thread.

I do not agree. See my statement above.

Prince incorporated rock, soul, R&B, jazz, rap, funk, classic music (amongst others) into his music, but that does not make him a jazzmusician.

Being blonde is no excuse for not knowing what real jazz sounds like but then again when's the last time you listened to her Father try to play ...
OOps sorry but Hans Dulfler for a father is more than likely where poor Candys confusion over what music is comes from ...
No way My crazy BLONDE little but would ever call Prince A jazzmusician let alone the only one worth mentioning sence Miles died !
How silly ...

exactly my thoughts, that's why I was pissed at Hans Dulfer's remarks... he was the one calling Prince the best jazz-musician alive. Candy made, according to me, the comparison between Miles and Prince as performers... I see what she means since I've seen Miles once (the last time he was at NSJ, I believe it was 1990):

Miles would have a great band, just like Prince always does. The band would be setting in a jam which would last for several minutes and Miles would be wandering around on stage (many times his back facing the audience). At one point he would do a single blow into his trumpet and that..., that would grap the audience's attention immediately, almost forgetting about the great band that didn't stop playing.

Prince has the capability to do the same with his guitar. Candy is right, there are not many perfomers who can do that. She said that Miles was the last great, and now Prince is filling the gap he left behind.

Enough ramble, this is what I think Candy meant...then came her bullshit-dad saying Prince is the great jazz-musician.

And that puts it in perspective.

Then indeed I agree with Candy and Hans should just shut up.

Bye, Hans! wave

Prince is a musical genius which is better than being just a good jazz musician. Jazz is just one style of Music Prince enjoys playing.

Now I think many of you completely underestimate Prince as an instrumentist. Enough said. Ciao.

Prince may fuze funk with jazz and make a unique sound of his own, but that's a bold statement: since Miles Davis died, prince is probaly the best jazz musician around these days???

I don't think so...
obviously they didn't look very hard before saying that.

What about:

John McLaughlin?
http://www.johnmclaughlin.com/

Wayne Shorter?
http://www.vervemusicgrou...p?aid=2919

They should know who Victor Wooten is by now.
http://www.victorwooten.com/

Who knows? Maybe Prince has some really well written compositions in his vault, but from what I've heard from his releases, it sounds more like he writes songs that just pay tribute to jazz.

Deffinately not a jazz musician. (from what I've listened too)

And yes, I have all the madhouse stuff, but the best chops come from other musicians. I love the song "8" but I wouldn't exactly call it jazz. Especially with those hand claps on the 2 and 4 (most of the 16 album).

I think Candy was just trying to give Prince the best compliment she could think up at the time of the interview.

And that's sweet. We all tell people with ugly babies that they are "so beautiful" now don't we?

Every fucking great musician who has approached or played with Prince has said he was a musical genius.

That's what Candy meant. Yes he is the most creative musician around since Miles and Zappa. Ciao.

By the way shall I remind some of the naysayers here what Maceo has said about P : "He is the closest thing to genius I've met in my life."...Now the opinions of a few assholes here really don't matter.

Prince is a jazz musician, a rock musician, a pop musician, a funk musician, a whatever musician and that's his strength. That's why he is the only guy out there who turns up anytime in a club and kicks everyone's butt. Because he is one of the very last stars who can really play.

I agree that he is a great musician. I don't think anyone who has listened to his stuff that knows anything about music would disagree.

What I am saying is that's quite a bold statement that he the best jazz musician around these days when the albums I've heard from the above guys have quite amount of skill and creativity behind them that, in my opinion, Prince has every potential to be all that but chooses to excell in other forms of music that is not jazz.

This isn't a dig at Prince. I just disagree that he's a great jazz musician. Xenophobia might change that opinion, but from what I've heard, the best jazz chops come from his backing band. I'm sure Prince is quite heavily influenced by jazz music, but chooses to focus on rock, funk, and ballads. And that's great if you got something to say. Which he obviously does.

What said Miles Davis in an interview:

Prince plays so good like all other jazzmusician he knows!

Candy Dulfer did a big compliment too!

I think Miles Davis and Candy Dulfer knows more about

music and Prince than all of us !!

One of the greatest drummer in germany ( Kurt Cress) said

Prince is one of the greatest guitarist with a fantastic

and incredible groove!!

Prince is Not A true Jazz Musician He is something entily on his own and that wich we call Jazz flows far beyond any of the Jazz flavored stuff Prince has done so far ... A little hot sause and some beans dont make what ever is in the pot chilly ...

I think that what he's trying to say is that there's very little jazz in Prince's music. So if Prince is supposed to be the frontman of jazz, it has died.

Prince is, has always been & will always be, an R&B/Funk musician basically.
He puts some Rock & Jazz here & there, but the foundation still are R&B/Funk.
He can't fuck with real jazz musicians.

Prince is not jazz. As Yamomma says, he is a great musician with a great range and can play a variety of different styles. but he is not a jazz musician even though he seems to be going toward a jazzy-like direction. Those Madhouse records are more like fusion than pure jazz. I dig those records but some improvisation would have made those records even better.
