Do You Miss 12" Extended Remixes? And B-Sides?

Remember back in the 80's Prince would always have a Cool B-side that wasn't on any album or he had extended plays that were Great. Do you Miss these and wish he would do this again?

Heck YEAH, that was one of my favorite parts about being a fan

the 45" + Bside then the 12" + Bside

The long versions really started with Purple Rain. Even though according to Prince the long version are the regular version. What we got on the albums were edits lol

1999 even though a double album was a regular album just with full version songs.
Bsides first appeared with 1999: Horny Toad, Irrisistable Bitch, How Come U Don't Call me

And along with the singles were lp photos to add to the collection
Man!! You got me nostalgic right now. Going to the record store to see what was available going up to the clerk "He do you think you could get some more copies of the 12" American/Girl single?"

The first b-side was "Gotta Stop Messin' About" on the 12" of "Let's Work".

With the Hits & B-Sides we finally got a lot of the B-sides on CD and the same with Ultimate with the extended-12 inch version of the songs.
Those 2 discs are played alot my me,so back to the question "Do I Miss Them"
the answer is - AND HOW!

Yes.

And since the b-sides were often more dirty or risque than album tracks, it's likely we'll never hear something like that again.

Hell, we won't even hear something like "Another Lonely Christmas," as he's a holiday-denying JW these days.

That's true, but it's not the same. I remember going to the record store and looking for any new Prince 12". When I would see one I'd immediately flip it over to see what was on the b-side. If it was non-LP I'd take it immediately to the cash register. Couldn't wait to get home to put the platter on the turntable! music

Not 2 bother U but yeah those were some happening times
vidoes were new, Music in the 80's was exciting. More avenues of expression...

On the HITS cd all the B sides weren't included.

I might be misssing some by memory

Absolutely.

That's the biggest problem I have with the way that's music's gone these days...
The formats.

Downloads just aren't the same, music has turned into a disposable medium.
There's no sense of 'owning' anything, there's no excitement anymore or
sense of 'event' when a new single is released (if singles are released at all!)

The old formats were the best...
The extended versions, the b-sides, the artwork!
It all came together to create 'something'. Something with an identity, something
real, something that meant something. I miss it.

I think your post has said it best. Seriously, I nearly started crying, even though I'm too young to have experienced the way it used to be in the 80s.

Brilliant post.I was just thinking the same.I remember back in the day bunking off school on a monday to get the bus to the nearest city to wait in line at HMV to buy Prince`s latest album/12" single. It was a real event. Then we`d hang out all day listening to it over & over till we`d learnt the lyrics & poured over the liner notes for info on who was still in the band & for hidden messages etc.I miss those times!!

Although there are no B-sides anymore, the full length of cd's almost doubled compared to those released in the eighties. Dirty Mind was about 30 minutes, Parade 45 minutes. If you would release something like that now it is called an EP. So maybe the B-sides are included on the cd's now biggrin

But I do miss the artwork from good old fashioned LP's smile

I think that was what made the LPs more memorable. The less songs you had on an album, the more precious they seemed and the more you were looking forward to the B-Sides. I would not mind for a 30 minute album, if every song was something special on its own and three singles would guarantee at least three B-Sides.

sigh SO true... I remember pouring over the artwork too, searching for clues and anything else I could possibly find... I must have sat and looked at just the Purple Rain 12", for hours and hours on end... It was the first time I'd really come across him (apart from 1999/When Doves Cry), and I just stared at the picture on the cover, him on his motorbike, thinking "Who IS he?" It was my most treasured 'possession'! It's definitely not the same now....

razz razz razz cool Thanks for posting this! Anyone got the 'proper' UK 12" cover? Back and front please.. lol .Probably not!
