potential opportunity missed

with this upcoming benefit concert on saturday, could prince possibly miss another opportunity 2 showcase his latest material and get people interested in lotusflower, mplsound and xlier?

if looking at how the oscar party went down with celebrites posing against a backdrop of the 3 albums listed behind them, yet the concert featured nothing aside from crimson and clover (which is a cover) alongside the other covers featured in the setlist, how then can prince generate interest in his new projects?

i truly believe in the last several years, prince has missed out on potential opportunities in his public appearances 2 generate that interest in his lastest and or current projects.

on a side note, i belive bria needs 2 start appearing on stage with prince and sing. that's the only way she will generate good interest in her album imo.

do u agree/disagree and if so, what can prince do 2 spark that interest?
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

It isn't Prince's party.

I stopped trying 2 figure out Prince's business plan 4 these albums a looong time ago. I'm thinking the watch word 4 his marketing strategy is "FUBAR".

Your initial post suggested that Prince needs to play new music to generate interest. I was simply pointing out that he played more new stuff than just the Crimson & Clover cover.

But what I'd really like to know, and this is a question I've asked before, is why is there so much concern about the commercial success of Prince's new music on these boards? Does it really matter at this point? Prince is a legend who's been in the game for 30 years. He's got a pretty solid core fanbase. Anything he puts out will sell at least 250,000 copies (which really isn't that bad these days) and he'll make a tonne of dough when he tours. Why do care so much about chart success? Does it somehow validate us as Prince fans if his albums do well? I really don't get it and I doubt Paul McCartney or Bob Dylan's fans care as much. So why is it such a concern here?

here is the setlist 2 what prince played sunday night and if this inaccurate, could u please add the songs that were new?

Purple Rain (Intro)
Yes We Can Can (Pointer Sisters)
Let’s Go (The Cars)
Crimson and Clover
7
Shhh
Come Together (The Beatles)
Cream
Miss You (Rolling Stones)
Honky Tonk Women (Rolling Stones)
The Middle (Jimmy Eats World)
The Bird (The Time)
Jungle Love (The Time)
Glamorous Life (Sheila E.)
Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry)

encore:
I Feel For You
Controversy

i personally could care less about if prince has a number one album again, but there r others on these boards that would like 2 see him succeed in that. because he is a legend, he's been coasting on that instead of challegening the audience like he used 2. if u look at his whole entire career up until emancipation, prince's live material always focused on his latest projects, ever since emancipation, it's been more greatest hits than new material. so when his latest projects comes out, not many know of it due 2 his own lack of promotion. whether it b appearing on tv and just doing interviews isn't gonna cut it. he needs 2 play that new product 2 get the public interested. hell isn't it interesting how bruce springsteen plays his new song on the superbowl and his new album wound up 2 b number one? in the long run that album (bruce's) probably will never reach the numbers born in the usa did, nor will anything prince release reach the sale numbers of purple rain, but it just would b nice 2 finally c prince once again, claim a project he's invested plenty of time in2 and promote the hell out of it. make the world know that he is still making music and this is where he's at now.

He played Ol'Skool Company (I really hope that's not how it's spelled, by the way) between the Purple Rain intro and Yes We Can. And given that it's on Lotus Flow3r, I think we consider Crimson and Clover to be new in this case.

I agree that it would be nice to see Prince play more of his recent stuff in concert, but the fact is that only the diehards want that. Your average music fan couldn't care less. They want to hear the stuff they know. Just the way it works once you've been around for a while. That said, the new stuff isn't out yet: it could very well be that we've got another ONA-style show ahead of us, with lots of new material in the setlist. Remember that prior to the release of TGE, Prince wouldn't play Gold for fear that bootleggers would get it out to folks before he did. Maybe that's true here as well?

And just to quibble with your Springsteen: Bruce's album came out the week before the Superbowl. Sales went down afterwards, not up.

okay old school company wasn't a title i was familiar with ..thanks ..and possibly ur right about him not doing 2 many song prior 2 it coming out, but the press is getting wind of his website and such. he does have 2 appeal 2 outside the hardcore base 2 make this project successful.
