What's the nicest/coolest/most friendly thing Prince has done?

We all know the guy can be a bit insufferable and more than a pain in the ass at times, especially with his fans, but a few times he's surprised me. What's the coolest thing you think he's ever done, either for himself, others, or for his fans?

For me it was the One Nite Alone Tour when he let the NPGMC members into the sound check, held court and even answered several questions from the audience, passing the mike around from member to member. At one show in Atlanta, he even let a guy from the club go up on stage and jam out on one of his guitars. There was something really intimate and cool about the 2 soundchecks (and one aftershow) I was privy to with my membership and it dawned on me at the time how awesome it was to have someone of Prince's fame, celebrity and stature offer that to his fans. I couldn't think of any other artist in his league that had ever done anything like that - or even has since really.

What do you think?

back in 1985 he played 4 nights on the Purple Rain tour here in Houston. Secretly during the day, he played a free concert for handicapped (even deaf kids who could feel the music) schoolkids. He kept a lid on it and didn't try to promote his charitable actions through any publicity. I knew two girls with MS that went.

Both of those things of course. Also when he did the Tower Records signing in NYC back around 92. It was really a fun time. I also liked when he played The Palladium and had the VIP Passes and we were Privy to Food upstairs. It was also Cool when he was doing Jam Of The Year ...In Nyc he played Madison Square Garden Tramps and then Trump Casino and then that same tour he did Radio City Music Hall and he did play Jones Beach. We got to see him so many times it was GREAT! It was also Cool to see him at Club USA/The World, Roseland Aftershow back in 1988 after Madison Square Garden, Cool in Minneapolis when he did the Celebration for a week at Paisley Park and then took us all out to see Minority Report at the CHANHASSEN THEATER. Also, after RUPERTS when he had the Private party at Paisley Park with a DJ spinning records and I did have drinks then. There have been alot of Fun Cool things Prince has Done, but I'm a VERY SPOILED CHILD who WANTS MORE!!! biggrin

During the Love4OneAnother charity days of late 1996 and early 1997, he clothed a handful of underprivledged children from Minneapolis and St. Paul. There are some pictures floating around of children wearing replica symbol "Brr" winter jackets.

And in 1994, didn't he fund some new instruments for the Chicago Prepatory School of the Arts? It was the focal point of the 1994 VH1 Honors, where Prince and The NPG closed out the festivities with Interactive / Endorphinemachine.

when i met him - he shook my hand and said "peace brother" when he could have just ignored me

and i think the parties at his house are cool because sometimes the hollywood types cant attend real concerts for security reasons, so at his house they can just relax and be themselves and not worry about a thing

i also think doing covers like Creep and Best of You are cool

Oh, and opening his Paisley Park Studios for those festive $7 concerts / dance nights back in the late 1990s / early 2000s. I paid $7 back on Oct. 20, 2000, and after a short while Prince, Najee and the NPG ripped up a 45-minute jazz-fusion version of "The Ride" for about 45-minutes.

Never forget that --

Eye read an interview from 1994 about the "the most beutiful girl in the world video"
There was a heavy set woman in the video and he told her that she was beautiful. she then wrote 2 him a few months later telling him that she was now persuing a modeling career and how much he inspired her 2 be comfortable with herself.
ALSO, he wrote back a letter 2 one of his fams saying that he was glad she was his friend and 2 stay in school. this was in 1992 eye think. eye was pleased cause that was the first time eye ever heard him do something like that.

when eye read things like that it make me sooo happy, he really is sweet.

To me there are many usually at concerts, but that time when he had a pizza brought out on stage and shared it with some audience members was pretty cool, because you can get very hungry sitting at his shows waiting till midnight for him to come out!! nod biggrin

Hearing about how he took the fans who went to the celebration in 2002 to the movies to see Minority Report and paid for them too. Now if that's not cool as all hell right there, I don't know what is. lol

Yeah that was way kewl....I was there that nite when the air conditioning broke at Paisley and after Prince did his set he kept saying "U all are going to the movies with me tonite right?" Just follow the white limo!!....I really thought he was joking until we were walking out and my friend asked one of the security guys if Prince was serious and he just shook his head like Prince just lost his damn mind or something,...LOL!!

And sure enoug there is like a traffic jam of cars leaving Paisley driving down the road to the theater at 2AM and it was Pajama nite so we were all in our jammies...smile

Once we were all there my friend and I went out to the concession stand to get drinks and popcorn and Prince peeks around the corner and orders an orange drink and popcorn....the lobby went dead silent and after he went back to his seat my friend speaks up to the line "Alright everybody, change ur orders!!" LOL!!

The 1985 special concerts for handicapped children and the 8/2003 show to beneifit the Mn. Dance Company where he recorded many of the songs of Purple Rain. Its nice to actually be reminded by the answers in this thread of the many things that he has done that are mentioned at the time and quickly forgotten.

Well, there is a southern town called Princeville that needed funds. Prince donated around $40,000 to help the town and don't forget about the monies he donated to the school in Vietnam during the promotion of 3121 fragrance. He has also asked for can goods to help families from fans who have attended his concerts. What I love about Prince, he keeps it simple and quiet. He doesn't have to blast it from the rooftops when he helps someone out. He is cool like that..... cool cool cool

Yeah. It reminds me of the b-side, 'Hello'

"We're against hungry children, our record stands tall."

He was doing charity way before it became an 80's music cliche'

He's donate a lot of money to inner city school programs during parts of his career. Most of it is never disclosed. The first time I even knew he did such things was when he received a lifetime achievement award at the AMAs.

When he stopped playing outside, came indoors, and sat down at the piano as a little boy. Best, coolest thing he has ever done.
