I am convinced that Prince is being critizied for things that have always been inherent in his work to a greater degree these days. I think it comes down to the fact that familiarity breeds contempt.

As someone stated the other day Prince is like the crack dealer who can no longer satisfy the appetities of some of his clients. They want a new high or least the same high they got in the beginning. He can't deliver that so the crack heads become ultra-critical because the problem must lie with Prince and not there own changed perceptions.

There is not one song that prince as written that a creative orger could not rip apart if it was their intent.

There are no badly performed songs on PE. Just songs that don't appeal to various people are various reasons.

I have yet to hear an anti-war song someone couldn't accuse of being naive. Its the nature of a 3/4 minute song. It is not a discourse or history lesson on the causes and reasons for a specific event.

brilliant, and so true.

put "somewhere here on earth" on parade and it's brilliant.
put "lion of judah" on the gold experience and it's brilliant.
put "free" on planet earth and it's crap.

it's his experience, not ours. he is continuing to evolve, and continuing to make vital music.

my one wish? i know he's a cocky mofo, but i wish he was more cocky about his new work. give us concerts with material from the last ten years. that's how the earlier work became legendary - hearing that stuff live over and over. hell, i'd pay top dollar for him to do a tour like that - with newer songs throughout.

the most frustrating thing is hearing something as solid as planet earth, going to a concert after it's released and not hearing one song off of it.

I think between Musicology, 3121, and Planet Earth, PE has the best texture, but it has some techical/production things in it that could be better - the vocal vamp at the end of Planet Earth is not mixed well, and Lion Of Judah is like Jack U Off - the music easier to handle than the lyrics. The main thing I couldn't get behind was that he's about to turn 50, but still speaks like he's in his 20s. There's a maturity problem in anything that's come out after NEWS, I feel. And there's not really a funky dance track - Chelsea Rodgers is disco-funk, but not really funk, IMO.

Couldn't agree more! Very well said.

I would also love to see him in concert only doing newer songs.

I like it for its somewhat reminiscent vibe of the Dream Factory material - and that's not just due to Wendy & Lisa vocals. Plus, he finally made a great disco-funk track with Chelsea Rogers after all these years - is it supposed to be somehow worse than his early material on the first two records?

I thought they just added instrumentation, no vocals? I know it sounds like them hear and there, but I thought it had been confirmed otherwise.

i edited ur initial comment but agree with what ur saying ..XCEPT ..putting lion on the gold experience shake ..u do that and i skip that track every time ...

but i TOTALLY agree with going 2 a concert of prince's lately and ur hearing either just covers or the SAME TIRED SONGS HE'S ALWAYS DONE OVER AND OVER ..bored yawn and i changed it from planet shit 2 a better album big grin
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Oh, well. I just personally have the slipcase version that was handed out as free in the UK - certainly sounds like them on several tracks. Never even taken a look on the actual jewelcase release and its booklet though.

i thought 'for you' was cheesy as hell when i first got it as a teenager but it's really grown on me over time. you can hear hints of what's to come. instead of hints of what was.

this is my favorite song from the album. i also like 'somewhere here on earth' but the record crackling effect almost ruins it for me. all the subtlety of a phone ringing at 3am.

I feel the 'record crackling' effect was used on shoe tho make it sound more vintage, like the records on turntables back in the day. That along with the video made that song great! biggrin

honestly, one of the worst albums i've ever heard. There isn't a single memorable moment in it at all. It's just a very uninteresting album.

yeah, i understood what the foley work was aiming for. i just thought it was overkill in the 'obvious' department. like how every time he mentions anything having to do with the word 'time' now you'll hear a clock ticking in the background. it almost seems like a nervous tick at this point. you can almost picture him sitting there with the lyrics on a sheet of paper, marking off all the phrases that need to be juiced up with a corresponding sound effect. 'oh shit,' he thinks to himself, 'i mentioned a jet liner in this lyric but all i've got on this sample cd is the general lee's car horn and the sound of a door slamming. oh well let me just change the words...'

i haven't seen the video, but now i want to. does it begin with a needle going down on a record? biggrin

like when i said the word 'wish' in that last reply, you could hear three or four pennies going 'bloop' into a wishing well or something.

I like to judge an album on how many songs from the album were actually played by Prince in concert.

How many tracks from PE were played live ? 3 maybe 4 ?

Not a very good start is it.
How many tracks from 3121 were played live ?

How many tracks from Musicology ?

Now look at how many tracks from SOTT were played live ? all of them ??
Lovesexy ? all of them ...
Purple Rain - all of them !
Parade - all of them ?!

Grafitti Bridge ? LOL

You can easily see what albums and songs he is proud of
Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!
