Constructively?
I thought the song writing was weak. You can pile all the flashy guitar licks and showy arrangements you want, but if it's just a weak song then there's no "there" there - if that makes any sense. None of the songs on this record ever seem to get "stuck in your head" - unlike "Colonized Mind" for instance - with the possible exception of "Chelsea Rodgers". Hardly any of it was danceable or funky either, but that may just be personal preference. I'm from the "Days Of Wild"/"DMSR" school and such. I thought PE was just boring. Nothing truly sucked on it, but there was nothing memorable about it either. I just found it dull and uninspired. I don't have a problem with it. I still wanna know what happened to Chelsea Rodgers tho.

How constructive! But, honestly, what are we looking for these days? Comparing some people to crackheads who can't get enough to get them off and want to complain about it is a pretty apt description. There is no "Purple Rain" here. Nor is there a "Raspberry Beret," "1999," or "Sign 'o' the Times."
Tom-may-toe/Tom-ah-toe, I guess. I think the new tracks I've heard are genuinely outstanding. "Colonized Mind" is anthemic to me and "Never be Another" is just a whole hell of a lot of fun. [Edited 2/25/09 14:07pm]

As someone stated the other day Prince is like the crack dealer who can no longer satisfy the appetities of some of his clients. They want a new high or least the same high they got in the beginning. He can't deliver that so the crack heads become ultra-critical because the problem must lie with Prince and not there own changed perceptions. There is not one song that prince as written that a creative orger could not rip apart if it was their intent. There are no badly performed songs on PE. Just songs that don't appeal to various people are various reasons. I have yet to hear an anti-war song someone couldn't accuse of being naive. Its the nature of a 3/4 minute song. It is not a discourse or history lesson on the causes and reasons for a specific event. I want to have your children.

There is no "Purple Rain" here. Nor is there a "Raspberry Beret," "1999," or "Sign 'o' the Times." And there probably never will be. Decent fans can just learn to deal with it and enjoy what comes. The rest will be too busy trying to prove how much smarter they are than everyone else.
I'm looking for the day when "positive" P fans will stop being dramatically dismissive of differing opinions with the good 'ol "Why do fans expect Prince to put out another Purple Rain? Why can't they be happy with what he put out?" rationale when someone dare say something negative or critical of P's music. Just because I don't care for most of Planet Earth, does not mean i'm wanting P to put out Purple Rain II. Hell, i'd be happy with a "shhh", "Dark" or even "I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore". It IS possible not to like a song on its own merit - withOUT wanting it to be "something else". • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I didn't like PE when I first heard it (when I rushed out to buy the Mail on Sunday when it was given away free!!) BUT..... I put it in my car CD player and it really grew on me! And as someone else here said - it brings back fantastic memories of the summer of '07 when Prince was here in London.
Also, my husband has a copy in his car too (and he's not really a fan), and he likes this album too. I also have copies in the kitchen, lounge, bedroom and office!

On the whole I much prefer Planet Earth to 3121 and Musicology. Love the title track, Guitar, One U Wanna C, Lion Of Judah and All The Midnights. Not too fussed about Somewhere Here On Earth or Future Baby Mama but don't skip them. Mr Goodnight makes me chuckle, so I don't mind that either. Not too keen on the lyrics for Resolution and it seems to jolly at the start but by the time it gets to the ending, I'm always enjoying it.
The only thing on the album that I really don't like is Chelsea Rodgers. Just never got into it at all. I burnt my copy for the car, replacing Chelsea with PFUNK and it plays much better imho. Overall, I'd give the album a solid 7.5. Not his greatest, but not the worst by a long way. RIP

I Love "Planet Earth," and it does seem that Prince is writing songs for a particular date that he doesn't get around to...and with "4Ever," it's more of the same kind of gigolo tease. Thank God I love Prince's voice, because his lyrics drive me crazy. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Not a good album in my opinion. Lacks any standout songs or moments. I would say that SHOE was listenable, but other tracks such as Guitar and Planet Earth are awful songs with terrible lyrics. I always think that giving this cd away was a mistake. It can't have done his reputation amoungst casual observers much good. Not a single person I know, that got PE from the concerts or the mail thought it was even decent. A shame because they enjoyed Musicology and 3121!

- unlike "Colonized Mind" for instance - with the possible exception of "Chelsea Rodgers". Colonized Mind is definitley not on my favorites list of the new tracks. I just can't get in2 it. Anyway for my review. I did not like Planet Earth...it just seemed too contrived and trying too hard to sound serious. I listened to it once the first time I bought it..yawned after it went off and couldnt wait to get in2 Guitar Guitar - Love it still. Wish it had a video..thumpin', jumpin. Much better than the demo version. Somewhere - Nice laid back tune...nothing too special. Just ..nice. I loove his vocal delivery on it. The 1 U Wanna C - Probably the best tune on there. Should have be another lead single. Future Baby Mama and Mr. Goodnight are good too. Again...nothing to make you think about how he recorded it or special. I love the Linn's used on Future Baby Mama and the spoken breakdown. Chelsea Rogers and Resolution Are the last tunes I think catch my attention. I had a tear when Resolution went off. As pop and cartoony as Resolution sounds, it reminds me of those songs like "People Just Want To Be Free" those good ol 60's pop tunes that had a simple message and wasnt over produced and long. That's another thing I liked about this record. It wasnt OVER PRODUCED like The Gold Experience and Musicology. There is alot of space and simplicity in the album..not enough FUNK though that was brought in 3121. But much better than Musicology to me. I gave it a 7 out of 10 too. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I think Prince composes excellent music, if he just puts as much effort into the lyrics (which we all know he is capable of ) we have a winner.

It is not a discourse or history lesson on the causes and reasons for a specific event. I like your analogy of the junkie who can't get his fix anymore...I would add Prince has tried to move on from many styles of his past albums and in that evolution he may have moved on from many of his fans in the process. In that same line of thinking I remember when Emanicipation came out and a lot of fans I knew (before the org was even here) were perplexed by his lack of overt sexual funk, but then caught on years later. Same way with Lovesexy. When LS came out many fans were wary of what it meant or how it fit with their view of Prince. Although Planet Earth wasn't exactly my favorite album, I can clearly see Prince is still evolving and it may make sense to me years from now. Lovesexy, my favorite album to this day, took time to absorb and feel out. It wasn't until I saw him perform the songs live that I truly embraced the album, and it may be the fans haven't bonded with PE quite yet, maybe never will. I will also add, the song PE(and Colonized Mind for that matter) is really Prince's world view: That we won't solve any of our environmental or political problems until we view it from a spiritual point of view, truly seeing and more importantly, embracing the beauty of God's creations. Right or wrong, worldly or simplistic, he's got a point and it works for him. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

And what's up with the play by play 'getting ready for a big date/big night out' thing? Prince has done that with 3121, Life of the Party, Incense and Candles, Mr. Goodnight, There Will Never B Another Like Me. It's kinda played out, innit? They say write what you know, and if that's the case Prince must spend all day getting ready, primping and prepping, fussing and planning. Listen to how much detail Mr. Goodnight goes into when describing how he pampers his date. It's a rigidly planned operation of wealth porn. It's laden with intoxicating and luxurious amenities, but zero spontaneity, zero intimacy. And Prince claims to know exactly what a woman wants on 'Future Baby Mama.' According to P, women want their girlfriends to hate them. And on 'The 1 U Wanna C' he says 'eye no u ain't no concubine.' But that's exactly what he's soliciting. He's flashing his wealth around, calling for a woman who wants to be ensconced in riches to make her friends jealous. It's a terribly shallow look at women and romance. Planet Earth is the album the narrator of 'Movie Star' would make. It's got the environmental records that's supposed to make you horny, it's got the conspicuous spending of cash, and the puerile misogyny. It's more advertisement than art, a personal want ad: Rock star seeking skank. Prince is pimping his lifestyle to some gold digger, promising her the empty pleasures of wealth and the privilege of being ranked somewhere beneath his guitar in importance. Nice post. While I dont despise this album and dont mind "hokey environmentalism, naive anti-war messages". In fact I like "Resolution" because of it. (not to mention the W&L backing vox) I totally hear where you are coming from on his stunted view of relationships and women. Terribly sad considering how mature he was beginning to sound on Emancipation. The guy in Movie Star was a 20something with tons of talent and sudden fame. Of course he's going to talk and act like that but Grow up already, damn, its been over 20 years!. [Edited 2/25/09 9:10am] Good LAWD The man needs to change his game on the female tip! You right, lyrics shallow when it come to females and romance the last three albums. The cat is smarter than that when it comes to love, at 50 years I hope so. You know I think the problem is that this wasnt a truthful album. Even 3121 while not all great had some beautifully honest songs.
I thought The Word, Fury, The Dance were some of the best tracks. I think when he overthinks or over conceptualizes a record (as padawan so brilliantly put) it becomes shallow. Play from your gut Prince not this pussified I'll make you my Rapunzel shit, but bitch you betta lock tha door when I leave else one of your girlfriend that hate you so much gonna be next in line. At least thats what PE sounds like to me. Redemptive qualities for me are Resolution and the guitar ending of PE. I pretty much am not into this album. Lets hope the next muse inspires truthful anger, hurt, sorrow, joy, love. You know, all those fuzzy warm things called feelings. Cus child, we aint feeling you on this one. Give us some  We ALWAYS feel you in concert. Give us something to hold us over until we see you live, like ADORE, WHEN I LAY MY HANDS ON YOU, shit like that.

I think it's one of his better albums. It has some fantastic songs on there like "Lion Of Judah", "The One U Wanna C", "Guitar" and "Somewhere Here On Earth". I think that the last track shows a new, different side of Prince. It's too bad that the album didn't too better sales wise than it did.
I'm a longtime fan (since "1999") but haven't posted very much. I will still say that people who come up with comments like "It's crap" etc are not true Prince fans anymore. Prince has gone thru many changes thru the years so some people may have liked him at a time and may not like him now. Very much looking forward to the new albums this year, especially Lotusflow3r. As much as I like Prince I cannot help but agree with you, not all women (me included) find menial possesions important, where I am going when I pass from this earth I will not need them. Also not all women want to be just a adornment on the arm, everywhere they go with their man, he talked about flaunting her,for me that would be highly embarrassing, and like I said before he needs to get over himself first, a women should be equal with a man not beneath him,God never created a women to be less than the man but equal... One more thing to add: he mentions I like pretty things and your just a pretty as you can be, what happens when she starts aging and the outer beauty starts to fade?? I assume he meant outer beauty, if I remember correctly he said he likes to have beautiful women around him.
