Old Friends 4 Sale (From the Album) Vs. Old Friends 4 Sale (Unreleased Version) Is there anyone else here that agrees with me that the released version is better than the unreleased one. I like that orchestral sound much more with the violins. I am wondering because upon reading about this most people like the unreleased version more because it seems more like a actual in the studio recording?

I definitely think the released version sounds more polished and full. I think the allure of the older version are that the lyrics are more raw and personal - he's not masking them in any imagery in the way he does w/ the newer version. That has an appeal. I think the things I like about the older version are such that I wouldn't compare the two - they're just different.

the released version is awful just plain awful

I have to say I prefer the released version over the unreleased one. I like both but like what Lovesymbol2 said, the sound of the full band makes the song sound complete. The unreleased version, while great too, sounds like it's missing something. Oh and the lyrics on the released and unreleased seem to work great, with a full band or not. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I prefer the original lyrics... everyone knows the backstory. The released version is cool, though. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

When it's about the music only, the released version is much much better. The arrangement makes you feel so and little in comparison to him. He sounds so powerful and sure about what he's singing.

I like the oldest one (without strings version) with the cold synth that fits the meaning and more striking lyrics... and I love how it goes into that weird off key synth rhythm tone at the end that used to fade into All My Dreams on the vinyl bootleg Charade My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I like that one too. I like both really, but yeah. And the 1985 lyrics are better than the 1991 ones, nach.

The unreleased version is much better. It hits the right places. One of his best songs ever. I wish he could do more sad, melancholic tunes. I believe that sex is a beautiful thing between two people. Between five, it's fantastic.

I do think the production of the released one is great and dramatic... but I wish that style had been done for another new track... I like the old cold one being simple. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Cheers [Edited 2/10/09 12:52pm] The unrelease one is much better, The purpose of the song was real, when the lyrics were changed it lost it's originality. The original musically was smokier, the jazzy feel felt like what he was singing about which were real events. The later release is impersonal and waterdown, and a bit overworked. Too much sound added in. I first heard this on one of our local station 104 WDKX right after Kiss was released as a single. It was said that it was a promo for the upcoming movie Under the Cherry Moon. (such exciting times) I was able to tape it. It's said that some kind of a piece of the song is in the movie. He wrote that around the end of the Purple Rain era along with Hello. He talked about it in an interview with Interview magazine, he was driving the interviewer in his car and let the person hear: Hello, Old Friends 4 Sale, Strange Relationships...

unreleased makes more sense 2 me lyric wise where as the released version, it seems a little off 2 me. like he was forcing the words 2 fit in the musical measures somehow man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

He wrote that around the end of the Purple Rain era along with Hello. He talked about it in an interview with Interview magazine, he was driving the interviewer in his car and let the person hear: Hello, Old Friends 4 Sale, Strange Relationships... why do you think the original wasn't released? Maybe he felt it was too personal, which according to engineer Susan Rogers, he had a nack for righting seriously good personal song and not releasing them. Also since Old Friends 4 Sale was slated for the (Charade)lp with a different bach of songs he just decided not to. Maybe it didn't work with the movie script. I still think he should have released it as a B-side maybe for AnotherLoverholenyourhead since both songs have similar issues. CHARADE 1.) Little Girl Wendy's Parade Christopher Tracy's Parade" was originally recorded as this outtake. The song is basically the same but with a reference to Wendy's guitar (rhymes with "car" in the next line) as opposed to Tracy's piano. Incidentally, Prince sings "little girl Wendy's parade" in "Kiss" right before the third verse. Everyone come behold little girl Wendy's parade The show will proceed unless it should rain strawberry lemonade 2.) New Position: 3.)I Wonder U: 4.) Under The Cherry Moon: 5.)There's Others Here With Us Prince's experimental frame of mind is evident on this track, a dark, strange number with a stark instrumentation made up of tribal-like drumming and various sound effects, such as someone weeping. Prince's vocals are harsh and confused, matching the nightmarish lyrics mentioning death and suicide. Recorded during the Parade sessions, it confirms Prince's belief the spirit lives on after death. It's strange how your mind works when Love is in power One learns 2 care and appreciate a flower What makes others want 2 change your mind? All the things I've seen, life is so sublime 6.) Life Can Be So Nice: 7.) Sometimes It Snows In April: 8.) Old Friends 4 Sale This slow bluesy classic is one of Prince's most autobiographical songs in which he sings about Steve Fargnoli, Wendy Melvoin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the late bodyguard Chick Huntsberry. A somber mood is established from an eerie slightly discordant synth with a piano the main accompaniment. Recorded during the Parade sessions, two versions exist, with one including Clare Fischer's orchestra. It was revised in 1991. The sun set in my heart this afternoon 4 2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow In Uptown when winter's alarmin', 9.) All My Dreams This long, suite-like track segues from "Old Friends 4 Sale" on the original Parade album. Playful and adventurous, this impressive outtake contains two melodic themes. One features Wendy & Lisa on vocals while Prince's voice sounds if he singing through a phone. Without interrupting the flow, the song enters a dreamlike segment of two lovers where Prince's voice is slowed down half-speed and then ends climatically with a message to never give up on your dreams. The spoken intro to the slow speech appears on "Acknowledge Me." Welcome, this is where I live This is where I dream my dreams 10.) Girls & Boys: 11.) ♥ or $ This original is superior to the released version, being built around a funky guitar riff that was removed when Prince decided to release the track as the B-side to "Kiss." Prince also uses his normal voice on the original. Nothing comes 4 free now If U want 2 be with me now What's it gonna be now? 12.) Heaven Performed by Prince, this whimsical track was recorded in May of 1985 but was never placed on any configuration of Parade. Prince plays the main "canivalesque" theme on the organ, alternating with a different figure, played on synth sounding like a harp. The lyrics reflect Prince's belief that heaven can be a place on earth. Heaven will be here on earth If we just try 2 love Neon Telephone This is Prince's version he later gave to Three O'Clock (after The Jets turned it down) for their 1988 Vermillion album. Recorded during the Parade sessions, the song inspired the neon telephone in Under The Cherry Moon, used by Mary to speak with Christopher. The lyrics are about a woman who refuses to call Prince on account of her pride. Sometimes her pride is like a big tall building It hides the street that leads 2 a sweet mystery
