ELEVENTEEN
I talked to Scottie Pakulski (The main engineer for this new box set) the other day for about 15 min. after the soundcheck in Osaka. He told me in person that most of the recordings on the ONA box set are his mixes straight from the live board, straight to DAT, no multi track recordings and that the overdubs were extremely minimal consisting of Prince adding some noticeable keyboard parts on a song and Rhonda beefing up some of her vocals in one part of a song. The only other manipulation was just straight cross-fades between the recordings of each performance.

Thanks. That's some nice information. I keep reading about people obsessing about massive overdubs and so I go back and try that much harder to hear something, and I still come up with nothing. Perhaps that's because there's almost nothing there to come up with.

SexualSuicide
I agree with most of your review. BUT like you said you have 70 sets of other Prince bootleg shows, and only 1 ONA show. I feel that yes this is an excellent live set by Prince. But in my opinion Prince had better shows to take from. Buff,NY is a great example. That show alone Prince is in more tune w/the NPG and the crowd. I also would have used more from Detroit. I'm not quite sure why he used so much of Portland, OR. Other than the fact he might have came up with the idea a week or so prior?

I can't argue with that. Having only heard one "ONA" bootleg is both a positive and a negative. On the positive tip I don't have this huge pile of discs getting in the way of that elusive goal of objectivity. In other words, I haven't fallen in love with any other versions that I must now try and divorce myself from because that version didn't make the set. I can just focus on the task at hand, honestly listening to each track.

But on the negative side I have no way of knowing as you do what even greater stuff might be out there. And what might be missing that perhaps should have been included.

Thanks for the correction. smile I've made the change. I had to fire my editor, though. It's amazing how you can overlook the most obvious of errors when proofreading.

I could be wrong, but I think that usually Renato played the solo during Avalanche.

Let me get this straight... Prince has a live album coming out? Wow.

Seriously, great review... do you work for UPTOWN or something because those guys are usually the only ones who put in that much time and effort to inform.

Thanks... from a civilian.

Thanks for the detailed review, B. I can't wait to hear that disc 3. I know Prince played Purple Rain at several of the shows. I am surprised that he did not put it on this set. I would think it would increase his sales, and I was excited to hear him play it on piano. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.

Check out this article on Scottie (so is he the same 'Scottie' from "The Undertaker" that Prince says at the begginning of the song The Undertaker, "Scottie...shake something" to?

WOW! Absolutely fantastic review - I am anticipating this on my doorstep even more than ever before!

I have quite a few concerts from over the years but having seen the latest live incarnation have been sooo looking forward to this!

I'm now listening to some old Madhouse numbers to keep that jazz vibe flowing!

Is Disc 3 really as good as Small Club. Hot Damn!!!
