Live versions of When Doves Cry Is there a list of the live renditions of "When Doves Cry"? Did he ever sing it at one-off events, or only tours?
Also, he usually doesn't perform the full song, right? Musicology Tour only had the first verse while Act 2 tour had a short instrumental clip...

Thanks for the link!
Though the 1993 shows aren't exactly up to date there, are they? And if you try to go to the main page of the site, it doesn't work, what's up with that?

I never liked When Doves Cry live. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

And the live version from the Osaka rehearsel 89 is in my opinion the best !

True. But Syracuse '85 WDC is good, so is the rehearsal on 'Neon Rendezvous' tho. I probably killed the thread, but i've always loved 'Neon Rendezvous'.

Yeah, it's never quite like the sheer greatness like on the album. Just like Kiss. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

my favorite live versions of this song are the ones from the sott tour with the horns and occasionally the barking sample from la la la, he he hee (and lyrics from the song a few times). kiss from that tour is also my favorite . i got a boot called i've come 2 play with u with a great (albeit really shitty sounding) 13 minute rehearsal version of when doves cry, where they keep going over the end . neon/noon rendezvous is one of my favorite boots, but for other reasons though . life's a bitch, but god forbid the bitch divorce me...

one the best songs ever recorded and it just doesn't work live. Maybe he needs to rework it live rather than trying to mimick it.

Well I do like the Lovesexy Dortmund performance, the audience helps a lot.
Can anyone describe the live versions he did in the 90s? I'm not that familiar with those tours.

There's a version that I've got....somewhere...on a CDR disc....where he sings it over the drum loop of "It."
That's probably my favourite rendition.

Y'all crazy. Kiss is so much better live, especially with horns. Do U Lie?

I'll have to agree with you on this one. I'm not the biggest fan of the Game Boyz era now, but the Nude Tour version of When Doves Cry (as well as The Question of U) is fantastic. Saw the Tokyo performance on TV back then and loved the arrangement. Just found the Tokyo performance audio (and Madrid) recently and love 'em both (Madrid has even better sound). I love how he incorporated the bass into the arrangement in the latter half of the song (as much as I love the original being completely void of bass).

I loved it on the Lovesexy tour, when it was beautifully blended with Let's Go Crazy, but not much any other time.

^On Lovesexy it was amazing but maybe he shouldn't have let the audience sing the whole chorus without him.

Yeah, the whole interlude in the Tokyo version of Rosie scatting "Do Me Baby" while Prince dances largely in silhouette is killer, and Prince's awesome piano solo at the end seals the deal. Best version ever. And in Madrid, wasn't the "Do Me Baby" part in "Controversy" instead? Good stuff all around.
