New Position Appreciation Thread! What an eccelectic song Alright... here's my thing.
I just bought the Parade Album/CD for maybe the 3rd or 4th time. I was watching Under the Cherry Moon for maybe the 65th time (yes, 65 times I've seen that movie), and I'm stuck on this song. This little ditty. Obviously, the whole CD is completely different from Purple Rain... and is a "distant cousin" of Around the World in a Day sound-wise, and a "crosstown neighbor" of SOTT, but New Position is an interesting little piece. The Carribean bells, the stick and shoebox drumming... and the groovy bass just blow me away everytime I listen to it. The lyrics are simple, and rather tame for a Prince song about "wanting to do someone", but the music is art. This has been said time and time again, but the tunes that this man came up with, primarily during this era, were REDICULOUSLY amazing! I can't help but to wish we knew all of his inspirations. I've never heard Prince perform this song live in concert, but I think it would kick some serious ass live! GREAT tune! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

This song was actually written during the Controvery years and then revamped for the Parade album...

LOL, if you think the lyrics are tame, you need to listen a little closer. Prince literally spells out what the song is about.

Yes he does. I discovered that a few years ago and I went . It's a fantastic song from a fantastic album. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yes he does. I discovered that a few years ago and I went . It's a fantastic song from a fantastic album. I only discovered that a few years ago myself. I was also way late to the "can't nobody fuck with us" part of "Beautiful Night." I must've listened to all those songs a thousand times and still missed those things.

I picked out the spelling "p.u.s.s.y." a LOOONG time ago. But it's still tame compared to what Prince has done and sung.
I'd love to see Prince do this song in concert. He could have 2 fans come up on stage. One person can play the sticks, and the other can play the cowbell, and he could play the base... or just provide the lyrics. That would be SO HOT if he did this and let fans do the music. It's simple enough, and it would be alot of fun to see if fans could pull it off for the short length of the song. I'm sure the crowd would love it!!! Love this song!!!! The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!
