"Why Should I Love You" -- appreciation This often-ignored collaboration w/ Kate Bush (on her 1993 album) is a masterpiece in my opinion. What a beautiful song. The Guitar slithers through an awesome hook. Prince's vocals at the end are awesome.
As collaborations go - this one is right up there w/ "Providence" -- Prince's amazing duet w/ Ani Difranco on her "To the Teeth" album.

I love love love "Why Should I love You?".
I'm ashamed to say I've never heard "Providence". [Edited 1/23/09 20:16pm]

I always loved this one! The song just rolls along, great guitar leads,
& yeah Prince's vocals sound real good. I know a lot of people don't like it, but for me: "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

A favorite of mine too. I've always wanted to hear them do more together, which is why it saddened me that you can't really hear Kate in "My Computer". He should re-mix "My Computer" with her vocals more prominent. Change it one more time..

Love this song....I'd like to see Prince and Kate do more together.
Apparently she went to one of the 02 London concerts. The comedian Lenny Henry also does vocals with Prince. Prince plays keyboards & guitar on this track. Great song! I heard the rip when you sat down!

For me, it's a fail. I liked it when I was 14 - the Trio Bulgarka's vocal refrain is fantastic, as it always is in Kate's work. The keyboard hook is top drawer too, childlike and sneaky, like a snake's ghost. But Prince had nothing to do with either. You just can't make the etherial funky. It was near perfect in the original demo form. I shiver to think what he would have done to the Cocteau Twins if he got his way. Maybe add a Larry Graham rap about moral virtue to Heaven Or Las Vegas. For a clever guy and obvious genius, prince can be pretty tasteless and vulgar with his musical pallette. To me, of course. To others, no doubt, Prince's version of Why Should I Love You is better than When Doves Cry. But those people are fucking insane.

It's not quite a fail to my ears but at the same time I understand what you're saying. The verses are gorgeous but when the chorus kicks in it sounds like it was taken from a different song and results in a rather jarring listening experience.

A freind of mine who is a hug Kate fan and is partial to a bit of Prince said that the Kate version was a beautiful song and then Prince got his hands on it and Kate didn't really know what to do with it because he'd changed the song so much and not necessarily for the better?
Kate, then took the song and not wanting to offend Prince, left some of his bits in but had to do a lot of work on it to get it on the album. I have no idea how true this is because I've never heard the original Kate version, before Prince played on it. I heard the rip when you sat down!

We can hear the demo version here
I wish Prince & Kate have done it live at least once or that Prince would play guitar on Wuthering Heights live with Kate. * [Edited 1/30/09 7:15am]

Hi Garganta & Jn2
Thank you both for the recommendation and the clip. Really appreciate it. On hearing the original version, I'm not sure if I like it because I've heard Prince/Kate version so many times. Sorry, I like it but do I like it anymore than the kate/Prince version? I'm not so sure. Listening to Kate's orig song, it actually sounds like there's something missing and that something is Prince and his guitar. Thanks again. I heard the rip when you sat down!

always thought of it as a let down. Kate solo version sounds more like Kate. My Computer is a better collaboration.
Providence is nice too. Its a shame Prince didnt use Ani more on Rave. [Edited 1/30/09 12:53pm]

They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

I'll never forget waiting outside the Emporium and there was a seperate queue of celebs waiting to get in but they couldn't cos' the guest list hadn't arrived and then this limo turned up and Kate Bush made her entrance.. Pure Class.. Some people are like Slinkies...

Wow, yeah Prince really Princed it up alright I guess this seems more like a Kate Bush song in the original version. The released version pretty much sounds like a Prince song with a Kate Bush Vocal on it. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

The crazy thing is how on earth did Lenny Henry manage to get on this?
He sings the last part with Kate.. "Dead in the middle of Little Italy little did we know
that we riddled some middleman who didn't do diddily"--BP
