How do you retire from breathing?
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Prince did retire. About 20 years ago around the time of his feud with WB. He issued a public statement that essentially said he was going the amateur route. He said he wouldn't put that max effort in any more. And if you look at his work since that time, it shows.

Prince is an arrogant lazy mofo coasting by on his reputation, who ultimately thinks he's better than the rest of us, but at the end of the day still wants as much of our money as he can get his greedy purple paws on. So he dogs us out on one hand but then tries to watch his words, and plays to our memories when it's get-money-time.

I laughed when I saw Beyonce wearing the Parade t shirt, and Kim Kardashian in the Purple Rain T-shirt. C'mon Prince... you think you are too good to play most of that music or associate with the artists that worked with you on it. But you are ready to pretend you give a damn for the dollars. Just retire.

I'm totally surprised u haven't retired yet! Why r u still around is the question.. eek From your post u r the one hurting yourself 4 hanging around an artist that’s an arrogant lazy mofo coasting by on his reputation. I will not support any artist that I don't like and will not waste my time complaining about them on a message board dedicated 2 him.

Thank you pennylover! highfive There are a LOT of fans that need to retire from Prince but that's a whole different thread altogether.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

He's already semi-retired. His overall work rate is way down compared to his earlier workaholism.

Last tour - 2004 (residencies and one-off gigs since then)
Media interviews and other promotion since then - minimal.

Nothing else to do but make music, hang with celebs and do whatever faith-based stuff he gets kicks from. If he can afford to, why not? I'd love to see him tour but in his shoes, I'd be doing the same. Nobody ever gets younger.

ABSOLUTE CRAP!!
I dont agree with many posts on here but find construcive criticism interesting & informative. However your post can only be described as a vile rant.To call Prince an `arrogant, lazy mofo` is a deeply insulting personal attack on someone who has given us all so much & still continues to do so.Also this pathetic statement is wrong & ill informed in so many ways.Because of the £31.21/£25.00 ticket price of the O2/IndigO2 London shows I was able to afford to go to 17 main shows & 13 aftershows.I have been a hardcore fan for 20 years & thought my best Prince experiences were over. However at 49 he gave me & many friends our most special summer ever! He could have charged much more for the tickets. To attend 2 awesome shows on many nights was truely magical. Also he does continue to work with former colleagues, not that he proves anything by doing this. That is a strange, backward view of looking at life IMO.Did you not see his last Brits performance with Wendy & Lisa? Plus he has performed & collaborated with Sheila E many times in the last few years.
To post such a hateful message says more about your negative state of mind & sad life. Why dont you retire from this site & focus on getting some much needed therapy!!

I don't think he should retire. When he takes that stage he is pure magic. What should be retired is the disrespect some of his fan base exhibit toward him. I don't know why people get angry that he is throwing celebrity parties. I have seen him play about 50 times, at very reasonable prices. When he plays the more expensive shows, no one is forcing us to pay to go. The "Musicology" tour saw me at eight shows, in the first six rows, at about $100.00 a show. Webster Hall was 25 cents. "Good Morning America", and the "Today" show tapings were free. An after show at Trammps was $50.00. The Avery Fisher Hall aftershow at the WWF club was free to NPGMC members and only $40.00 for our guests. The Nokia Show was $31.21. The London shows were cheap from what I hear too.

Oscar parties are for celebrities. They are there to impress each other and be photographed and talked about in the papers the next day. They are entitled to their parties, and Prince has a right to do what he wants in his own house. I have seen lots of celebrities over the years at the Prince shows I have attended and most of them look like they are as awe struck as we are when they see the man do his thing. Prince is a living legend. Let's be thankful that we chose his career to follow as opposed to say... MJ? (I'm not trying to be starting something. razz )

Prince has been in the recording industry for over 30 years. In that span of time, he has released enough music to account for five careers by any lesser artist. And this isn't accounting for the horde of unreleased material.

I have for some time gone with the notion that Prince fans are the most spoiled lot of the bunch. Mush has been given... yet many of us 'demand' so much more. I saw a thread where a lot of fans are complaining about his celeb after parties.. yet they seam to forget the literally thousands of after sets he has thrown for his fans during the course of his career... for his fans.

IMO... at 50... has he not earned some time to do things for himself rather than 'always' for the fans? If he wants to party with his peers sometimes... hasn't he earned the right?

My primary question is directed towards those who complain most about this 'neglect' of his fans as well as to those who would suggest that the last decade of musical output fails to satisfy.

Do you think Prince should or should have , for all practical purposes, retired? Since his albums are supposedly, no longer any good... should he simply do as other artist with his tenure in the business and simply stop making them? He has enough 'hits'... he could simply ride off the glory of his past albums during his twilight years... right?

Since he isn't doing anything for his fans... since he isn't making good music... shouldn't he simply just stop?

p.s.
I'm not wanting to get into any issues concerning copyrights and all that jazz as I know many fan's view of him ties into those issues. But that remains a separate discussion all together..

Absolutely not. His last few albums have been less than great, but he still has the potential within himself. He's healthy, his voice is still strong, his guitar skills have progressively improved, and he remains as effervescent on stage as ever before. If I had to speculate, I'd say the problem with his studio albums is related more to a lack of inspiration, as well as a lack of ambition to prove himself as a recording artist (and I can't blame him for that because he already has a secured spot as one of the best of all time).

Music is something Prince has to do for himself. Not us.

When you are a musician it's one of those things where it calls you. You don't call it.

He doesn't owe the fans anything.

They can go to a listening station and preview it and buy it if they like it or buy something else.

If P offered a Under A Cherry Moon Stimulus Package where we could get our $12 (1986 Value) back that would be beautiful.

For me, the last fantastic album Prince made was The Rainbow Children. Prince, for me, has been irrelevant for a while now. Musicology, 3121 and what I've heard of Planet Earth are not so much bad as just simply average-ish good stuff, it's rather dull and nothing great, and I generally expect from, who I consider the greatest living musician, Prince. For a while now I have come to the conclusion that Prince should retire, or at the very least, concentrate and nuture an album more than doing his "album a year" thing. I'm saying that because Prince isn't in the 80's anymore. There was that time when he could pick up a guitar and have an album out that was the absolute shit. However (and it happens to everyone) the immortal Prince is losing touch, it's probably an age thing, it sucks, I know. Prince, at least in my eyes, is an artist whose albums are always meant to be examples of cutting-edge in the music world as opposed to artist who are simply involved in a movement. So in recent years his output hasn't satisfied me and as a boy growing up in the early 00's listening to Prince it's kind of sad. Other on a positive note I will say the samples I have heard of the new stuff is extremely promising and I am very pleased with them. Hopefully, they won't be the only gems to be found on those albums like his singles in recent years have shown.

We all don't have to agree. We all can have different opinions. I see Prince less as a fan these days and more like I would a regular person. His does take the music for granted. He doesn't work on the songs like he used to. He does think he's better than us. He does look down on certain band members, he does look down on his own songs and his own legacy. He does race bait in his songs. I think he used Wendy and Lisa that night at The Brits to hype the European fans for '21 Nights'. And I bet they know it. Prince thinks he's better than you, me and everyone else. Maybe you don't see it, but I do and I'll say it whenever I please.

And ticket prices were cheap because demand was low. But if Prince rocks your world playing cover songs and intentionaly mumbling the lyrics to his own songs then by all means enjoy. lol

That's a very stupid question.

He needs a lot of $$$$$ to live at the status he lives. So why would he retire when he has about 35 albums finished in the vault.

Would be nice to see Prince slow down, a tad, maybe put some quality control on releases coming out bi-annually, while starting a family with a woman he can love for at least 15 years singularly and have a couple children anyway, he seemed so endeared with the idea of fatherhood during the Mayte marriage. I do like the way he has chosen to tour lately, bunk down in one place for awhile and let the fans come to him. Much easier on him.

People don't retire for their passion. You die or go crazy if u do.
Musicians, artists, carpenters, athletes, mothers, arborists etc etc
I'm an artist, I was drawing in pre-school (when they were teaching kids how to draw stick figure hands I was drawing full hands) I'll be drawing till the day I die...

Prince will do this until he can't anymore
