I'm not upset about it. I just find it interesting as a student how he's personified Marx's theories about class division almost perfectly. Can you really disagree?

I don't see this at all. Because he has some parties at his house? If that was all he did now, that could maybe be argued, but there's no indication he won't tour just as he always has. (And in his 30 years of touring, he's never charged Rolling Stones or Madonna levels of pricing for regular shows--which is where I think the class division argument would make more sense.)

Aw come on, he's the perfect musical analogy of the bourgeoisie. He threatens to sue his fans for using his pictures or watching his videos, charges fans an obscene price for a website after they already paid for an old one that closed down, throws constant publicized parties purely for his elite social circle, and yet still has legions of fans in a mystified consciousness who defend him regardless. Even more astonishingly, this is despite the fact that he's written songs that explicitly derogated them.

I think he's wrong with his online strategy, and the effect it's had on his fan base, from Housequake to everything else--well, I think that all sucks. And I think he's out of touch in regards to not having videos online and the rest of that, but I don't see how he fits perfectly into that Marxist model. I'm just saying that I don't see how having some people over to your house is akin to a Marxist political statement. I mean, just to get them to his house, he has to sing and dance for them, so doesn't that upset the analogy?

Not sure what you mean about the obscene price for the website. Has there been a price officially announced? I've heard $77, which doesn't seem obscene in any way. (But I don't check that LotusFlower forum much, so I have no idea.)

It's all subjective, but I think paying $77 for a website is fairly ridiculous given how much artists like NIN and Radiohead have offered their fans via their sites. Comparatively, Prince looks even more foolish because he sold his fans on the premise of a permanent membership to a site he didn't bother keeping open.

As for his performing, no, it doesn't upset the analogy because he enjoys entertaining his guests much like bourgeoisie owners enjoyed through methods like telling stories and starting business debates.

My whole point is that Prince has gone to great lengths to establish a dichotomy between his elite friends and his common fanbase.

I have always been somewhat baffled by Prince's Oscar parties. Maybe I feel that way because he seems more religious now. I thought he'd want nothing to do with the L.A. party crowd and avoid it like he does politics. But, I guess there's a part of him that still likes the Party Man image.

Yawn!, sick of all these "prince is having a private, ego-enhancing party with the hollywood elite" stories. Most of which couldn't give a flying F@@@ if it was Michael Jackson up on stage. Not saying he shouldn't have fun and entertain the shallow culture-less creatures who live in La La land. But stop telling us about it, we are not interested. Oh and by the way there are over 50 thousand fans here in Ireland who want your blood for not bothering your ass turning up for a few hours last summer. Regardless of the situation, that just ain't right.

50 thousand, jesus can you imagine?
What artist these days can afford to do that?

Oh and by the way P, your little show off sessions with the plastic people might help your ego, but it's the little people who pay for all your purple shit!.

Unbelievably We still love you. Give us some good shit.

Guys,

First of all, Prince is a grown man and can do whatever he wants, where ever he wants and with whom.

Second, he has given fans countless opportunities to see him live in concerts, aftershows, soundchecks and even invited fans to come to his own house. Didn't three fans get the opportunity to visit his house two weeks ago?

Third. Prince has been a rich celebrity even since I've been a fan at the age of 14 over 20 years ago. You guys are acting as if he's always hung out with fans and now all of a sudden he hangs out with celebrities. HE IS A CELEBRITY, he's one of them and been that way for the past 25 years.

I guess I don't understand what I'm reading because two years ago, I had the privilege of standing right behind Prince and I know that most artists of his caliber very rarely offer fans that opportunity. How many fans can say they went to Janet's Madonna or even MJ's house or hung out at their studio.

in 2004 he did musicology, 2005 hit and run shows with tamar, 2006 and 2007 superbowl and 3121 vegas, then 21 nights, then minneapolis where we got three concerts in a row. 2009 we got new music and hopefully some new shows.

We're all anxious, I know I am. We got a new website, new music and a cd coming, we should just wait and see what happens. I think Prince has spoiled us badly.

I've never seen so many people bitching about someone throwing a fucking party!!!

I didn't see anyone complaining about Elton John throwing an Oscar party for the past 20 years!!!

Apparently, all Prince is ever allowed to do is record and tour, record and tour, record and tour.

And now he's gone "Hollywood". Nevermind the fact that he's been living in L.A. off and on since the 70's. And he's starred in multiple Hollywood films. And that most of his friends are celebrities.

I don't know anything about the entertainment/music/show business industry, but a wild guess would be that keeping in touch, staying connected to and visible among your professional peers is part of the job, might be even essential to your professional survival.

So I would think that these parties he has at his house are kind of part of that, they must have some business/networking purpose. Parties and unofficial occasions are where contacts and deals are made. And no, he is not making any business deals with us mere mortals:)

Anyway, my point is, you can't live in a cocoon, you've got to mix if you want to stay afloat and updated on what's going on in the circles of your profession.
The parties are one way of doing this.

Prince has always had a record of donating to charities. He just doesn't make a point of publicizing it(except for Love4OneAnother), which I think is honorable.

Wow, the amount of people upset that the dude's throwing a party is pretty out of control. Is it possible that he could plan a tour, and still throw a party? Or, is it possible, that this is what he enjoys in his free time and this is his social life, and it has nothing to do with pleasing his fans?

I mean, maybe some of you like going to the beach or playing poker in your free time. Should people bitch and whine about that?

Wow, the sense of entitlement.

(Meanwhile, I just learned that an acquaintance of mine was invited to last week's post-Grammy show, and DIDN'T GO because it was too big of a hassle to find a babysitter. Wow, I'd be dropping my kid off on doorsteps if I got that call. wink )

U have a valid point here, and I agree.

HOWEVER, I can easily understand why folks here get upset over this...

The only news we R getting about Prince is his exclusive private parties. This is at a time when there is a HUGE amount of anticipation 4 new albums.

Even I'm getting sick of it, and I have a fairly open view.

I just think that there's been so much news of Prince's celebrity hob-nobbing, and folks R simply hungry 4 new music, live music, or real news.

Peace.

~G

I'd have to agree with this post! I totally feel that he should be able to throw parties in his own house without having concern about..."oh, what would the fans think?" but all the while it's starting to feel like it's being thrown in our face. Moreover, if he does invite fans, it's so exclusive that only a few can experience it.

Lady gaga might actually be a tad better than bria! he seems to have always been swayed by a girls looks rather than her talent since he started, funny how the guy who calls for real musicians insists on pushing relatively talentless vocals and keeps someone like shelby more or less to himself, unpromoted - strange!
