The only news we R getting about Prince is his exclusive private parties. This is at a time when there is a HUGE amount of anticipation 4 new albums. Even I'm getting sick of it, and I have a fairly open view. I just think that there's been so much news of Prince's celebrity hob-nobbing, and folks R simply hungry 4 new music, live music, or real news. Peace. ~G Hi Giovanni! I am glad that you posted this because you are usually level headed about this kind of stuff. I agree with you. I usually am fairly objective about this kind of stuff as well. I think this is the first time I have ever even posted to a thread about Prince's parties. I agree that he can do whatever he wants with whomever he wants, but even I have grown tired of the Hollywood thing as well. It just does nothing for me, and it is not because I am not invited. I think it is that it all seems like such a synthetic, by-the-numbers experience. I loved reading reports on the PP parties and shows even though I never once attended. It just seemed like a much more organic experience, so I was interested. This is just too glossy and for the press. I don't know. I just hope that something more comes out of 2009. Oh, and I wanted to add that I would not want to attend one of these celeb affairs. I prefer Prince shows where the people know the songs or at least appreciate the musicianship beyond, "Wow it's Prince." Most of those celebs who attend his parties are casual fans at best. That's probably why he does so many hits and covers at these parties. I mean can you see Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton vibing to Colonized Mind? They just want to be at the "hot" party of the night. That equates to a pretty lame affair to me, as I am not star struck in the least way. This all reminds of a guy who was talking to me before one of the shows in Vegas. He and his wife were there from California. They had even paid the extra dough to be in the VIP section. However, his knowledge of Prince's career was so great that he did not even know that Prince had the 3121 album out at the time. He knew nothing beyond the 1984-1986 hits, and he even asked if Prince "still did the splits." To top it all off, he got so ill from drinking that they left about 20 minutes into the show. Well, at the end of the day, if Prince likes it, I love it - I guess. [Edited 2/12/09 18:14pm] perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Prince has become the epitome of what Marx derided in his Communist Manifesto. He plays these intimate legendary gigs for his bourgeois friends while us, the lowly proletarians, are left out in the cold and not even allowed to watch his videos online. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Probably gets off to himself playing a solo in Angelina's face, or him making bunny ears behind Stevie's head.

are uber cool and i am jealous to the ultimate max when i read the reports mentioning drunk, cat fighting celebs on the toillet whilst joni mitchell and stevie wonder are jamming with prince in his very living room. but how many times does anyone want to read about this when prince never makes us a part of it? i so hope that on his new website he will release shows like these spontaneous and intimate gigs of legends jamming together. but we have been reading these reporst on npgmc, 3121 and funkenberry for so long now with 0 net result for us mere mortals that i doubt he will ever release any of this stuff. reading about one or two cool parties is all fine but it just gets a bit much when you have to read this kind of stuff every few days about rare performances of incredibly cool songs with legendary or reclusive artists which you know you'll never ever hear or see. Absolutely! I agree Im sick of the read it and weep reports! for us "mere mortals" Damn Skippy Good Judy Gotta Dance 2 This

If that's so, it's disappointing to me that exclusive, elitiest parties thrown only for the rich and famous is how Prince chooses to "get his name out there" vs other ways which could, imo, stir up even more interest in the music or would make the average fan feel included in the "gearing up" process prior to the CDs being released or the website going live or whatever. I'm no publicity guru, but what if Prince went on a tv show or two or did radio interviews where he played a couple songs and talked about what's in store in regards to the new music, and/or how it came about? Stuff like that? I'm glad for Prince if he's throwing parties and having a good time. I want him to have a happy life and be happy. But reading reviews about parties attended only by the beautiful people just isn't that fascinating anymore and doesn't compell me to buy an artist's music, or to go see a actor's movie, or to buy an author's book. I guess I just don't get how throwing fancy private parties that the average person can't relate to and isn't invited to, and then later issuing raving writeups about how incredible the party was, equals effective PR for a new product or project. Prince has gone Hollywood!
Maybe he's going through a mid-life crisis? Maybe he's just bored? Remember,he stayed in Minneapolis for many many years. Still,it's weird when we hear about losers like Paris Hilton and P.Diddy hanging out at Prince's house. These are exactly the type of posers/wannabees that the "80s Prince" would have made fun of in the past...lol... . Let's face it: Fame and fortune changes people. Prince is no exception.
If you're rich and famous you want to hang out with the rich and famous! Gone are the days when he claimed:"music and money don't mix!" Gone are the days when he wanted to be noticed by his fans with average income and average lifes. The kind of fans that spent their hard earned money on him for many years, so he would be able to live the fancy life he lives now. In a way it's our fault, if it wasn't for us and the money we spent on him he would be still making music in somebody's basement in Minnesota and work for Mr. McGee. Maybe one day he will remember where he came from and that it wasn't the other rich and famous that he chooses to hang out with these days, that made him what he is today. Yeah and I know some people here will say it's not us who made him rich. It's his talent and hard work that made him rich. Bull, there is a lot of talent out there that goes unoticed, because those people will never have the chance to get the exposure. Talent and hard work doesn't make you rich, it's the people who decide to pay you for your talent and hard work once they're exposed to it. love the one who is Love!

[Edited 2/12/09 23:40pm] I'm sure he'll do TV once the CDs are out in stores or right before the tour starts. Since he's been inviting people to his house (media and/or celebs), these are some media he's been covered by: Indie 103.1, LA Times, Rolling Stone, USA Today, Eonline, TMZ, and NME (in the UK). Some people are taking this personally like they tried to go to his house and were stopped by a doorman or bouncer like it's a nightclub.

Some of you are really fony...make me laugh..
I wonder and am quite sure that Prince's staff and himself check on these forums, here as they did on the late housequake to inspire themselves and have answers to their own questions... Too bad that Prince does gigs for Fortunate and fortuned people, whereas his real audience as we make part of are kind of left aside.. of course VIP's or whatever they are called can spread words concerning his new tunes, of course they also got ears to hear but do they listen well? I don't think its fair to slam Prince for this kind of thing. Networking is part of any job. I think its normal. More importantly, its great that Prince is working. I am a consumer of his products (music/performance). That's all.
It is not a personal relationship. ...???... There are tons of things that happen in this town that I am not invited to--some I am. I don't feel bad. As a consumer, I am happy to see that Prince is working. I am always intrigued about what such creative ventures might cross my path. Its all good here in LA. Ps. I get the sense that famous folks aren't legitimate fans??? I don't agree with this. A fan is a fan. A party attendee is perhaps a fan or fan-to-be... [Edited 2/13/09 11:14am]

I'm not upset about it. I just find it interesting as a student how he's personified Marx's theories about class division almost perfectly. Can you really disagree? The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I don't see this at all. Because he has some parties at his house? If that was all he did now, that could maybe be argued, but there's no indication he won't tour just as he always has. (And in his 30 years of touring, he's never charged Rolling Stones or Madonna levels of pricing for regular shows--which is where I think the class division argument would make more sense.)
