It was never a commercial single.

that's one song that COULD have been a hit, I think they were just scared to release it..... I bet a 12" would have been a classic.

It was a hit in my city....I remember being real young and hearing people bump that song. Controversy and Dirty Mind would have been bigger if he wasn't in underwear all the time.....I understand the 'shock' value he was going for but Purple Rain and 1999 would not have been as big if he was still in a underwear and stockings. Reminds me of "He's so Dull" a little bit.

I still love Private Joy the same way I loved it when I first heard it.

It was the B-Side on the Do Me Baby 12" but it was only the LP cut.

I don't know if B-Sides count in the charts, or in this case, sort of a double A-Side.

This song (like many) should have been a hit. I love it. He did play it live, but not too often.
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

it probably wasnt released because its a song about masturbation, however I beleive it was in one of those "Vacation" movies in the 80's with Chevy Chase.

There was a cover version by a group called Cheyene (or something like that, not sure of the spelling) on the soundtrack for the movie "Wierd Science"

I thought this song was about Susan (Vanity 6), but I know Prince was into the double entendre big time.

I heard this as well.

Private Joy is one of my favorite songs from Prince. I don't think it was ever a "hit" since it was never officially released as a single (only as a "B" side).

Me three. Someone here on the org once posted that the song was about Susan. But only Prince knows for sure. smile

I used to think that Prince was singing "U're my pride and joy", instead of "U're my private joy". err lol

I'm sure to P it didn't matter. He received the full royalties for the single since he wrote both songs.
